Halloween was one of the most absurd holidays, but it didn’t mean that Glory couldn’t find something to like about it. In fact, she was just happy that there happened to be free candy all around. It was odd to be collecting it, especially when she tried to watch what she ate. The only reason she was so particular was so she didn’t end up throwing up an entire bag of gummy worms when she went hard at practice. Other than that, sweets were something she was near obsessed with. She remembered when she had an extra dollar that her dad gave her, it always went to the corner store for candy. Sure, she had to walk there (and it wasn’t close to their home on Owl’s Bend,) but the escape from Justice was enough to justify her obsession with sweets.
She wasn’t sure how she ended up wandering into the Vixen Den (especially seeing she and the captain weren’t on the best terms,) but while she was already there, she figured that she might as well look for some more candy to shove into her hoodie before she inevitably went back to her room and would decide against doing her homework (again.) Instead of finding something delicious to snack on, however, her nose was assaulted by the smell of burning sugar. Furrowing her eyebrows together, she ventured to the shared space of the Vixens, where she found none other than Louis making some kind of mess in their kitchen.
“What the hell are you doing, trying to burn the whole place down?” She says, easing up to him, “and what’s with the apples…”
Louis put a load of effort into most holidays, a habit he’d picked up from his parents. He’d grown up in a small town so parties, whatever the occasion, were both an excitement and a competition. His parents were competitive by nature, they liked being the best at everything and it was a sentiment that Louis shared. The difference between Louis and his parents, however, was that he was much less disciplined than they were these days so he had a tendency to be a little sloppy.
He knew the kitchen smelt like smoke and it was probably going to for a good while. Making caramel had seemed simple enough in the YouTube videos but Louis had forgotten he was no chef and that he was easily distracted. The first batch was ruined because he forgot about it, distracted by something on TV; the second was destroyed because he got distracted by something on his phone; the third was destroyed because...well, you get the idea.
He was on his 5th by the time Glory walked in and Louis looked up from the simmering pot, surprised to see her, and grinned brightly. “Hey,” he greeted, looking at the discarded pots and pans from failed caramel making. Those were gonna be a bitch to clean up. “Nah, that’s on tomorrow’s to-do list,” he joked. “I’m making caramel apples, duh,” he said, “well, trying to. What are you doing here, anyway? You don’t live here.”

“I wouldn’t call this starting,” Lukas said with a snort, staring a little warily at the pile of decorations, most of them tangled together. He’d been absolutely planning to truly wait for Louis before starting, but once seeing what a mess they were in, he got started ahead of time. “All I got up are the cobwebs.”
He climbed down from the little stepstool, kicking a little string of colorful eyeball lights with a hint of annoyance, but he was still pleased someone was actually up for decorating the house. It was something all the Vixens seemed down to do, but it’d been hard to find someone available to help. “Not much, relax. How was class?”
“Oh,” Louis said, looking at the mass of decorations and...yeah, this was probably going to take longer than they thought it would. “Decorative cobwebs or literal cobwebs?” He asked as he picked up a fake, plastic pumpkin and swiped his finger through the layer of dust on top of it. If Louis were a smarter man then he would’ve suggested getting the decorations out the day before and cleaning them. Maybe the musky ‘been in a box in the basement for a year’ smell would add to the atmosphere.
“Class was...fine,” Louis said, almost tripping over his words as he decided at the last second when he decided not to mention his date. It wasn’t anything particularly eventful, plus the hickey behind his ear (which Louis had already forgotten about) would probably spoke for itself. “FYI, if I see any spiders - real ones - in this mess I’m gonna shriek like a little girl.”

“Bro...you started without me?”
Louis stared mournfully at the decorations littered over the floor and the rest of them already hanging around the room. He loved Halloween and he loved any excuse to turn the den into something from another planet for a few days. He’d been looking forward to this, he’d had plans. “I told you I’d be late back from classes.”
Louis had had a date. An actual real one with an actual real boy. He hadn’t done that before and it was scarier than anything he’d ever done or seen on Halloween. I mean, he wasn’t gonna call it a date because it wasn’t really, it was two guys hanging out...and making out a little. “How much have you done?” He asked, a pout visible on his face.

The weather was finally beginning to cool down and the air had that earthy scent to it that just screamed fall was here. After staring at her textbook for so long that the words began to bleed together, McKenna grabbed her jean jacket and headed outside. The sun was already down and their street was silent, the perfect atmosphere for a walk before bed. The breeze caused her blonde hair to blow gently as she walked in no direction in particular. It helped her clear her head after a stressful week. She didn’t have time to get to her homework while in North Carolina, so she stayed up all night Sunday trying to get it all done. Plus, her grandparents seemed to be in their panic phased, given that they were calling her constantly, asking for the details of her day to day routine. It made her worry that they were suspicious of going behind their back by joining the Vixens.
She was so lost in thought, that she didn’t realize she made it to the main road until she heard all the cars whizzing by. It was a good sign that it was time to go back. As she made her way up the street, Louis approached her with something that smelled amazing. “I guess I can’t say no to that,” She laughed as she took the container from him. It probably wasn’t a good idea to eat something so indulgent, but she had to live every once and a while. “Where were you? Must’ve been somewhere good if you got this out of it.”
Louis handed over the box willingly, honestly glad to have it out of his hands. He would’ve loved to eat it if he had any room at all in his stomach and it wouldn’t be as good if he had it tomorrow. Plus, the long talk with his parents had made him lose his appetite a bit, even now he was slightly nauseous with everything he’d already eaten and the anxious state he’d been left in. At least he knew Mckenna would put it to good use.
“I was at dinner with my parents,” he said on the end of a sigh. “I think they were trying to feed me enough to make up for like...everything they haven’t fed me whilst I’ve been here.” He undid his jacket then because it was feeling kinda tight now. He was kinda too warm but decided not to take it off. “This happens twice a month, I never eat the dessert I don’t know why they keep insisting on it. What about you? Been anywhere interesting?” He asked, changing the subject.
Having dinner with his parents was always more of an ordeal for Louis than it should be. Despite the distance between them when Louis was at college, they made a point to make it down to Palmetto twice a month just because their daily phone calls weren’t enough to convince them at Louis was totally okay. There was always dinner and there was always casual conversation about classes, grades, practices, with an underlying tension of them wondering if he was lying to them about his well-being and Louis wondering if they’d ever be able to sit down without it feeling like a psych appointment. They made sure he ordered food he liked, rather than was compulsory for an athletic diet; made sure he took his jacket off so they could see his arms; made sure he was still a little bit dead behind the eyes because of his meds. He loved his parents dearly but their visits were exhausting.
He was relieved and tired when they dropped him off, craving his room and the comfort of his bed where he would probably lie awake and wish he was asleep until the sun came up. It was dark and the campus was quiet as he took a slow walk back to the den but he sidetracked when he spotted a familiar face.
“Hey!” He called as he jogged over, “can I interest you in some apple pie that I physically cannot eat or I’ll burst?” he asked as he held out the ‘to go’ container that held the dessert Louis’ parents insisted he have even though he’d eaten enough prawn linguine and bread to feed a herd of elephants.
jakefeldman:
“Really?” He inquired, turning to give Louis a soft smile as he sat down on the couch. “I barely watch anything but nature documentaries whever I get the chance to, y’know, sit and watch TV.” It wasn’t like Jake was completely swamped in homework or Exy stuff, but his childhood was still ingrained in him deeply. It had been years since he’d last been on the farm, but he still woke early, almost rising with the sun, and he still felt as though he was forgetting to do something if he actually got the time to put his feet up during the day.
It had gotten better over the years, he’d learned about self care in college and how it was okay to be selfish now that he didn’t have to worry about a million other things, so now things like cheat days were definitely something he embraced.
“Nah man, I would eat pizza all day, every day, if I could.” He said, grinning at Louis before leaning forward and grabbing himself another slice forom the table. “I don’t know when your cheat days are, but if you wanna treat yourself you’re more than welcome to grab a slice. And you can tell yourself it’s not completely terrible for you ‘cus I like my slices loaded with veggies as well”
“I just think they’re fun,” Louis said, shrugging, “you know when they used to show them in like...geography class in school? I was one of the losers that secretly enjoyed them.” Plus, nature documentaries were pretty much the only thing readily available when Louis was travelling for games. Sometimes there were movies but more often than not, on coaches especially, the tiny tv’s were stuck on a TV channel that only played documentaries. They were oddly comforting these days.
Louis watched with intrigue as Jake leaned forward for the pizza because Louis really didn’t get the appeal. It was just bread with tomato sauce and cheese right? He didn’t get what the big deal was. “I’m good,” Louis said, “I’ve never actually...eaten pizza before and I think I’m probably too late to appreciate it now.”
jakefeldman:
Jake looked up from the screen when he heard the door open and smiled when he saw that it was Louis, with what was probably the book he’d lent him the other week in his arms. He knew he looked a bit ridiculous right now, blankets wrapped around his shoulders and feet propped up on the couch, but he was in the middle of enjoying his one day of the week where he didn’t have any classes or seminars to worry about, and that meant marathonning which ever nature documentery was on the Discovery channel.
“Hey dude,” He replied sitting up a bit more so he wasn’t lounging as spread eagled in the presence of others, “Yeah, it is. Discovery have it on re-runs, and I’ve got the day off today, so I fugred why not.” He grabbed the book as Louis threw it at him, placing it carefully on the coffee table that was already crowded with an open pizza box and several cans of coke, because his day off was also coincidentally his cheatday. “Really? It’s great, I’ve seen it at least three times by now. You’re more than welcome to join, if you want? The first episodes just started,” He nodded to the screen where the end of the opening credits just flashed by, and then to the empty space next to him on the settee.
Louis knew he should go back to his room. He had homework, he had to make time for dinner, he had to get in a run and probably another shower before he tried to pester Andy into watching American Horror Story with him. Louis liked routine, years of building his life around hockey games and practices had almost made him obsessive when it came to planning his day out and disrupting that routine was...a challenge. For someone who generally came across as easy going, he was probably the most rigidly controlling person he knew. However, Betsy had told him a number of times that he needed to learn to let go of some things and that mixing things up in his day wouldn’t kill him or cause the world to end.
“Urgh, sure,” he said, after swallowing the desire to reject Jake’s offer. It wasn’t even that he didn’t want to hang out with Jake, he just got anxious about disrupting his own plans. So, Louis joined him on the couch and slouched into it, trying to get relaxed and not think about the books neatly piled on his desk in his room. “Can’t believe I didn’t know this was on, I love this nature documentary stuff,” Louis said, eyeing the pizza box on the coffee table. “Cheat day, huh? I usually eat as much McDonald’s as I can humanly handle then cry about it later. It’s worth it for the nuggets.”
gloryhoskinss:
Louis confused her, and she wasn’t sure if it was in a good way. She knows she’s… not always agreeable, and her demeanor is to push more people away than to let them in, but the more she tries to get rid of Louis, the nicer he comes back. Maybe it was a strange power trip thing - maybe he liked it - but in the end, it made Glory feel strange about being so off with him. He was nice to her, so maybe she should try to be nice back, even though he had almost spilled all over her.
“Eyeing the competition or eyeing a hookup.” She says in a deadpan tone, trying to assess what he meant from his facial expression. “Honestly? Probably. Though I could be underestimating you… but I’ve won my fair number of fights throughout high school… so I’m going to say 90% favoring me, and 10% favoring you. Benefit of the doubt.” Trying to fight a smile at his compliment, she turned to him, nodding. “Thank you… and it does look really nice in here… not having fun yet, but you haven’t ruined my night yet.”
If Louis was any kind of philosophical, he would probably connect his desire to be nice to everyone back to his high school days, as he tended to connect everything to. He hadn’t always been the nicest guy in school, living inside his own head was so exhausting that he didn’t have the energy to put in an effort with his friends but they were always nice to him, even when he didn’t deserve it. He knew that if they hadn’t been so good to him all that time then things could’ve panned out a lot worse for him; hence he put an effort to give that same treatment to everyone, in case they needed someone to be kind to them just to stay afloat.
Louis laughed at Glory’s observation and he shrugged his shoulders. “I guess I’ll find out later,” he said. He raised his eyebrows at her as she detailed how easy it would be for her to beat him up. He figured it would probably be a semi-fair fight but he was a hockey player at heart and throwing punches was kinda part of the job description. “I guess I’ll meet you in a Denny’s car park or something and we’ll see who’s last man standing,” he said. “Yeah, banquets are hardly parties of the centuries. Do you go to a lot of parties? Even some of the ones I’ve been to on this campus were more vibrant than this.”
oliviaxfinch:
Objectively, Olivia understood why Exy banquets were important; they boosted morale, encouraged players to see the other teams as people and not just competition, and helped kick the season off in a positive manner. Subjectively, she wouldn’t be too upset if she never attended another one again. It wasn’t so bad, this year, in comparison to others. It’d still be a stretch to say she was having fun, though you wouldn’t know by the smile she kept hard pressed on her face.
She socialized for as long as she could stomach, slipping around the room and engaging in small talk when she could. Then she retired toward the outskirts of the court with a plate of celery sticks and people watch’d, catching glimpses of her teammates every few minutes. She maybe should’ve said something when she saw one of the Vixens about to barrel into her, but by the time she got it in her head to do so, they were smacking into each other, his drink spilling out of his cup and splashing onto the matted floor. “Gods, no, sorry, I saw you coming, I should’ve– it’s fine.” She brushed her hands over her skirt, but they came back dry. “Pretty sure the floor got the worst of it, anyways.”
Louis had attended his fare share of proms, dances, even a few banquets, but never one where there was so much...tension. He didn’t like the Ravens, he’d heard every rumour and was inclined to believe most of them and he felt strangely protective over the Foxes when it came to them. The Foxes might not be as good in the league tables but at least they could still be classed as people. He thought it was unfair to but these two teams in a room together and have them pretend to be nice to one another but Louis was still trying to have fun.
He wouldn’t call himself socially awkward but he knew he could be a handful. Louis was a big personality, usually with a lot to say, and more than once he’d been described as ‘draining’. “No, no, totally my fault,” he insisted, “too busy checking out the other team, know what I mean?” He grinned cheekily and side stepped the small puddle now on the floor. “Yeah, I’m not cleaning that up,” Louis muttered, “honestly, I’m just glad it didn’t get my shoes, my mum would lose her mind. Yes, my mum bought my outfit - sue me.”
lgntrask:
There were options for him here: one, he could go his usual route of snark and sarcasm and be far from congenial when it came to dealing with what just happened or two, he could be… none of those things. It was clear which of them he had to choose, particularly if he kept in mind what Wymack had told them and how, judging from the tone of his voice, the steel in his eyes and the red on his face, the consequences were more dire than usual should he start shit. So Logan smiled, not so fake as to reveal his true sentiments, looking down at his suit to where, thankfully, only a small wet spot was on the bottom of his pants. At least the quick reflexes were good for something, it would have been nicer if he wasn’t too distracted to have avoided the drink altogether, but…
“Don’t worry about it, man. I’ve done far worse things to myself so this shit is barely anything,” and as if to further his point, Logan shrugged his shoulders before throwing his hands up in the air, as if to say ‘who cares? not me!’ which… was true, technically. He couldn’t care about any aspect of this night at all and was counting down the minutes until it was over and he could just crash on his bed. Or say shit again about the other teams around the room. It took him a moment to realize it was actually one of them that had bumped into him, one of their people, but when it dawned on him, Logan couldn’t help heaving a sigh of relief. “Vixen, right? Uh… shit, I suck so bad with names, I really should just-… Louis! … or no?”
Louis always felt a weird surge of pride whenever he came into contact with a Fox and he didn’t end up feeling slightly intimidated. The Foxes, as a collective, had a reputation for being kind of scary and kind of like...loose canons. He’d interacted with most of them individually and they seemed to be mostly okay, if not a little intense at times. If Louis was anything then he was a trier and he liked to try to get along with people, he liked it when people liked him and tended to hound certain people until they did. So, it was hugely helpful when people decided to just go with it.
“At least it wasn’t hot coffee or something, right?” Louis laughed, brushing himself down in search of any spillage spots on his own suit. Worse things could happen tonight, Louis secretly had bets on a fight breaking out and as much as he didn’t want anyone to get into trouble, he kinda wanted to make $30. “Yeah, Louis!” He exclaimed, “And you’re Logan Trask. How was your night going before I tried to assassinate you with...I think it’s watermelon flavoured punch.” He considered the remaining contents of his cup and shrugged. It tasted like sugar and additives anyway, it was no great loss and Louis knew his dad would be having a fit if he knew Louis was ingesting this stuff.
I am scared of the lightning inside of me
excerpt from Someone’s Never Again (Linn D.)
@jakefeldman
After practice, Louis took a quick shower then forced himself to get psyched about errands and homework. He started by grabbing the book Jake had lent him a few days ago and jogging over to Fox Tower, letting himself in and peering into rooms until he found Jake. He rapped his knuckles on the door and let himself into the room, taking in a minute to take in Jake’s set up.
“Hey, man,” Louis said, looking down at the other who was wrapped up in a blanket, looking rather comfortable in front of the TV. “I got your book-...Oh shit! Is that Planet Earth 2?” Louis crossed the room and tossed the book into Jake’s lap, standing with his arms crossed as he started at the TV. “I haven’t even seen this yet, is it good?”
