When you really are writing a novel tho....Final count before edits: 136 scene cards...570 pages, 133K words... And it's just the beginning. Editing is about to be a slight beast, but I'm so excited to wrap up this lllooonnnggg, arduous process. Only to start another one. You really need to LOVE what you're doing, because no matter what it is, it will require everything you've got! 💚💚💚
Antagonists are tricky. Too little work, and the antagonist comes across flat. A flat antagonist is easy and boring, because he or she won’t push the protagonist hard enough. Plus there’s that practice of making fleshed out characters and having interesting three-dimensional people, blah blah.
We all know the saying: Every villain is his own hero. Though I wrote these questions and prompts with famous antagonists in mind, you could actually pose them to your protagonist or other characters (just switch out the protagonist-themed questions for antagonist-themed) and it will still work.
I’ve always found it most helpful to answer questionnaires in my character’s voice, so I have written this addressing your antagonist directly. Try to answer in the way he or she would. You’ll uncover hidden backstory, depth, and softness in your antagonist.
But remember – even something “soft” (like empathy) can be a terrible motivator.
Your Antagonist’s Backstory
Hurting people hurt others. What hurt you?
When was the first time you were frightened by something you did?
When was the first time you experienced pain?
What is the most painful thing you have ever gone through?
Do you have a mentor, or someone you’ve modeled yourself after? Who is it, and why are they so compelling?
Have you killed anyone? Who was the first person you killed? (Alternatively: Who is the person you’ve hurt most?)
When did you feel the most humiliated by someone else?
Tell me about a time you faced rejection.
Is there something you’ve said or done you wish you could take back?
Who (or what) do you miss?
What’s one thing you can never forgive? (Could be an event in the past, or a character trait like lying.)
When did you feel the most accomplished or successful?
When have you felt helpless?
What was the first lie you told? What do you lie about most often?
Your Antagonist’s Habits
What do you do to relax?
Where do you go when you want to feel like you belong? If you can’t get there, where would you like to go?
What do you like to read? What shows do you watch?
What do you daydream about?
What is your weapon of choice? How did you learn to use it?
When you feel uncomfortable, what do you do to cover it up?
What sort of clothes do you wear? Would you make changes to your wardrobe if you could?
Do you have any unusual or advanced skills?
How do you like to approach a problem?
Your Antagonist’s Personal Life
Who are your parents? Do you have any siblings? Are they still alive?
Who (or what) is one person (or thing/ideal) you would never harm?
Who (or what) do you love? Would you call it love?
What is one secret you’ve never told anyone? Would you consider revealing it to another character? If so, who?
What lie do you tell yourself?
What is one silly thing you’re afraid of?
Tell me about your dream vacation.
What is one fault in others you just can’t stand?
What type of people do you like to be around (if any)?
What about you do you feel other people misunderstand?
Do you like kids? What about animals?

Don’t Doubt, Just Write
So, I’m in the middle of writing new scenes for my MS. I used to have a title, but now it has moved around a bit, so I’m not sure what to call it. Anyway, I was writing just a second ago, when I found myself struggling to put words down. I had a goal... 30 new pages today. That’s a big but doable goal for me, since I write about 10 to 15 pages per hour.
Then I heard it: All the conversations I was having with my manuscript in my mind. What does that even mean? Well, it meas that as I am writing, I am also speaking to my manuscript , telling it what I would like it to do. I’m going through all the possible iterations that can come from this novel. I know that’s a lot of thinking. That’s mostly the problem. I thought of all these possibilities, and possibility crushed my pen. (I’m writing on a laptop, but same concept) So now, I am telling myself something new: Shut. Up.
I told myself to hush, because all the thoughts were drowning out the only thoughts that mattered. Not “is this good?” Or” have I seen this before?” Or “will this work?”
The only thought that matters is this one:
Write.
Just write.
So, here I am telling you the same thing. You could and should substitute “write” for whatever applies to you. If you are composing music. Just do that. If you are applying to a job. Just do that. Don’t tell yourself it won’t work or that they don’t need your talent. Literally, just do the thing that needs to be done. That’s what I’m doing today. I hope your day is a lot less doubtful and that you just jump in. Just do the thing.
Love,
Jarika

I'm going, going.... back, back... to #Wakanda, Kanda.... Got my flight itinerary, and I'm ready to take off!!! One day, it'll be extra normal to have an option or two like this every month/week. Today, however, I know I better do like the old folks say and get it while the getting is good 🤣 #BlackPanther #whatblackpanthermeanstome #WakandaForever #TChallaIsMyPresident 👑👑👑

I started reading #ChinaRichGirlfriend a while ago, and I felt like I had missed part of the story.... turns out, I had missed a whole book lol I'm so glad I doubled -back to #CrazyRichAsians ... It was ssssooooo good!!! I fell in love with Nick and Rachel, Astrid, and Peik Lin, and I adored the movie-like descriptions and gorgeous settings, fashions, and land/houses... It's a send-up, but it allows the reader to peek at exorbitant old-money and rich-folk shenanigans. And now I can get back to China Rich Girlfriend 💚 #RikaReads #goodreads #books #bookstagram #booksuggestions

World Building June 2017! Hello friends, its that time! What time? World building time! World Building June is right around the corner and its time to prepare your mind, body, and building supplies for 30 days of building worlds with some of the coolest cats this side of the internet!
What’s World Building June exactly?
WBJ is like other casual creative challenges where you create something every day! But how you approach WBJ is up to you! Are you mainly a writer? Write up articles and exploratory stories about your world to help flesh it out. Are you more of an artist? Make illustrations and concept art which helps visually flesh out your world. Are you more comfortable combining both art and literature? Do just that and create an illustrated guide!
How much or how little you build is up to you, as long as you build! The main purpose of WBJ is to get that world you’ve had on the back burner and finally making progress on it! Just get it on paper and you’ll be one step closer to putting that world into action!
Comic artists, Novelists, Roleplayers, dice rollers, game designers, this is for anyone who has a world that needs building! Even if you don’t have a world that you’ve had locked away you can take this as a creative challenge to make one from scratch!
Cool! How do I join though?
Just make a piece every day of June! Easy! But you can also show off your progress to the rest of the builders by tagging posts as #worldbuildingjune
Also you can follow this blog and we’ll be posting prompts and tips every day to help figure out what you can build further on!
You can also join us at our discord channel: World Building June Discord, and you can ask fellow builders for input, trade tips, and hoard resources for when you’ll need them!
We’ve been doing WBJ since 2014 and are about to break 3,000 builders!
So invite your friends! Invite their friends friends! Build your inspiration folders and crack open that journal you haven’t been using. But most of all… GET BUILDING!
I’m in! I’m almost done with book one, but World Building never ends!
