              when you write, it seems to absorb you into it, and everything else fades away as you get lost into the nothingness of paper and ink, words floating in the air. but someone has broken the atmosphere that he has obtained, eyes glancing up to see that of annabel lee, who stands holding a plate containing one singular cupcake. eyebrow raised, he chuckles softly.

                    “ hello, annabel. who might that be for ? “ 

        it was remarkable how quickly a smile could appear on one’s face. and in annabel lee’s case, it happened quite frequently. but this was an extra special occasion. her eyes would flicker bashfully down at the cupcake she had baked herself, rather proud how it had turned out, before meeting edgar’s own gaze.

        “you, of course! for your birthday. i made it myself.”

There was a satisfying CRACK as H.G. Henry had finally ended the life of Edgar Allan Poe, finally ceased the pitiful man’s suffering as he’d applied slight pressure to one side of his face, before bringing all his force down on the poet, breaking his neck. The laugh that came from him was out of pure joy and satisfaction as the man who’d betrayed him became permanently silent before him. The power to take one’s life was indescribable, and when it came to revenge, Henry RELISHED in it.

He’d turned around to leave then, when he heard a shrill screech that pierced his eardrums. Spinning back on his heel, shock laced his features as he saw a woman ( Annabel Lee ) hurrying towards the body of Edgar, tears streaming down her face. She hardly noticed the blood that stained her dress as she knelt before the corpse.

Weak.

❝ He deserved it, you know. For what he did. ❞

        he deserved it. those few words rang through annabel’s head for what seemed like forever, doing little to stop the sobs that wracked her body. he deserved it. no one deserved something like this, but especially not poor, sweet edgar. he may not be the most upstanding citizen, but he meant well. she knew that he did.

        tear filled eyes would finally move off of his body to glance up at the man who she presumed responsible for this. she had heard of the things that h.g. had done, how he was sent away before he could hurt anyone else... but this? this wasn’t how things were supposed to go. everything was supposed to be okay. they had been okay. she was not okay.

         “how... how could y-you d-do this? e-edgar is... was a good man.”

         “hey, em?” she was quiet, almost afraid of breaking the silence. then again, this was annabel they were talking about. but it never hurt to speak out her mind, didn’t it? “what do you think of eddie dantes? i mean, if you know who he is, of course.”

       laughter spills from his lips at the adorable giggles that leave hers, and before he knows it her wide and beautiful eyes are on his, and he can’t stop his smile, especially with her saying words she had already said once.        ❛ just once. i don’t mind, though. it’s adorable when you repeat things. ❜         eyes glance to her drink then, before back to her,      ❛ you want me to get you a new drink, cute stuff ? ❜        

        for a brief moment, brows knitted as she attempted to recall when she had already said something about his party, her wide smile taking over as she soon forgot about it. “oh, stop it, you!” glancing down at her cup, she was quickly thrusting it into his hand, although a shake of her head would follow. “i... i think... i think i’m good. lenore told me... i should stop myself early.”

        there was blood. oh god, there was so much blood. and it was almost unrecognizable, the body that laid in a pool of it, all life draining out of it...

        she was screaming. screaming and sobbing and choking on the name of the man whom she loved and was now dead. she could hardly remember when she had collapsed onto the floor, hands pressed to her heaving chest, but she had. pain kept her rooted in one place, kept her from getting any closer to edgar’s cold, motionless body. and all she could do was cry.          “o-oh, e-edgar...”

    maybe that wasn’t the best thing to say if he wanted her to react even slightly okay with seeing a ghost. ( after all, if he had seen one after the cabin, he would have tried to kill it. ) eyes glance from the beautiful annabel lee to where he could see the other ghost that annabel couldn’t seem to see. 

             ❛ lenore says hi. ❜

        she didn’t even want to think of the possibility that he was... and yet he was still standing there. it wasn’t like she really believed in ghosts, but. as she picked up her head and watched the other, she would feel her heart nearly stop at the mention of the name, finding it difficult to breathe all of the sudden.

        “... l-lenore? you can see her?”

The goggles that hung around his neck were removed, set aside, amongst various tools and metal parts. Poor Annabel was far too innocent, too kind to have gone so soon. It saddened him, seeing her struggling to adjust to her NEW form. How scared she must have been when she’d first awoken as a spiritual being.

❝ A—As I said, it takes p—practice. Perhaps you’d like t—to try holding ONE object f—for now ?? ❞

        her smile would grow ever so slightly as he made it a point to help, which she wasn’t exactly going to refuse if he was okay with it. she appreciated it. it was more help without feeling that she could never catch up to lenore or that edgar was being a bit too... was overbearing the word?

        “if you say so... what should i hold, then?”

    smile is gone the minute he hears his own name from the girl that looked like she had seen a ghost— oh. he knows what she was trying to say but was too shocked to finish her thought. yeah, he was dead, but he sure as hell wasn’t about to mention that.

        maybe he wasn’t actually dead. maybe all of those stories were just stories. but there was something that saw him standing there and made her extremely uncomfortable. eyes falling onto the floor as she fidgeted with her hands.

        “how... how is this possible? i-i heard...”

Ah, yes. He’d actually gotten used to being a ghost rather quickly, hadn’t he ?? Admittedly, it had been quite jarring at first, right after his death.

( if by “jarring” he meant breaking down, spending god knows how long trying to figure out how to get back, still unable to comprehend his DEATH— )

❝ P—Practicing concentration, I s—suppose. ❞

He settled with that answer, clutching the tool in his hand as he tinkered with his invention. At her next words, H.G. lifted his head to the fellow ghost, eyebrow arched.

❝ W—Would you like h—help ?? ❞

        practice. it was simple enough. he must have had plenty before he arrived at the mansion once more. she had her lessons with lenore, of course, but she supposed that she just needed more time. and god knows that they had an infinite amount of that on their hands.

        a smile would appear at his offer to help, a gentle shake of her head following. he was kind enough, but all the same, she was content with watching.

        “oh no, that’s perfectly alright. i don’t want to distract you from your work.”

        “a-ash...?” color drained from her face as she saw a familiar face that should be dead. she heard so many stories, of course, and she couldn’t help but assume... yet he was standing there. talking to thin air and all she could really process was the name that fell from his lips: lenore.

             cold, freezing chills are felt as he nearly glared at the snow. he hated going outside, wasn’t that obvious ? god, the things he does for annabel.. though, the smile upon annabel’s face did make this more bearable.. he looks around at the pure white ground of snow before back at her, shrugging a tad. 

                    “ —- sure. it’s the best. “

        her smile would falter ever so slightly when she glanced back at edgar, although not quite surprised at the reaction all the same. it was the most beautiful time, she thought, and she just had to share that experience with such a good friend.

        "oh, edgar. i know this isnt exactly your cup of tea, but do try to smile a little."

       “how did you ever catch on so quickly, mr. wells?” the ghost watched with wonder as the other tinkered with quite a few objects. she was surprised to not see lenore by his side, but she was no less entranced. she guessed that h.g. had been a ghost for quite some time, given that even she could only pick up objects on rare occasions.

       “i’m afraid i’ve been having much more trouble than i’d like to admit.”
