I wrote this entire thing in the Notes App on my phone when I was supposed to be working because I quite literally could not focus on anything else, not even my job, until I got this down, so enjoy maybe?
Nesta rubs at her chest absently, the crisp, sea breeze cutting across her cheeks, through her hair. Sometimes, she swears she can still feel it. A phantom tug. A phantom pain. Sometimes, she’ll wake in the middle of the night, gasping, her chest squeezing so tight it almost feels like it’s begging with her, pleading.
Nesta swallows the feeling down, buries it deep just as she always does, and looks out at the waves stretched out before her, the way the sun glints off the roiling crests. It feels almost odd to be going back to Prythian. After all, she had practically clawed her way out two years ago. Two years.
Two years since that last night in Velaris. Two years since she’d watched those eyes fill with tears, since shaking hands clasped at hers desperately. Two years since she’d said the words she’d learnt in a book tucked away in the back corner of the House’s library.
Nesta presses at her chest again.
