Kiss the cobwebs
As you brush their face
And brush them away
The soft touch
Of old floorboards
Like aching arthritis
Calling me home
It’s worn down
The curtains hang
Like arms that don’t
Recall how to embrace
The shutters stutter
Over welcomes they used
To have memorized
The welcome mat
Makes a sad comment
About not recognizing
My shoes
The kitchen that once
Rang with laughter
Sighs every day
Over forgotten tea and coffee
Planning a party it
Has no one to invite to
This place was a home
Now it’s dust
It’s shadows in the corner
Pretending to be us
It’s boarded up windows
Like closed lips
It’s cracked mirrors
(We never saw ourselves
Clearly anyways)
It was once a home
Roll up my sleeves
Make it into
A new one
