This scene still breaks my heart each and every single time I watch it.
Azula was a terrible, horrible person. She would have set the world aflame and laughed over the broken carcass of her brother.
But she was fourteen.
She was so ruined and twisted by her childhood and by her nation, driven to insanity by the expectations placed upon her.
Azula was bad and yet I canât help but feel so terribly sorry for her.
âI donât have sob stories like all of you.â
SHE WAS FUCKING FOURTEEN WHAT
âMy own motherâŚ.thought I was a monster. She was right, of course, but it still hurt.â
actually, i think one of the shows strengths is that they didnât shy away from what a horrible tragedy this was. even though she was clearly a villain and did unspeakably awful things, this scene was still framed as sad. there was no celebrating- they just look at her sadly.
the music for the battle that leads up to this moment is sad too- itâs an epic battle, visually probably one of the biggest things done in the entire series, and they could have played it with thumping, energetic, dangerous music. but instead itâs quiet and somber. because the whole scenario is heartbreaking, and they know it.
i think the fact that a kidâs show had so much respect for itâs viewers and their ability to understand the complexity of this situation is what makes avatar great.
msamberpriley <SWIPE> we still have work to do! We must be DISCIPLINED and continue to FIGHT! This is a movement, not a moment! Now that everyone has made their signs and had their photo ops at marches, CONTINUE THE WORK! CALL! CALL! CALL! Make it a point to set time to take action EVERYDAY (take 10min to call and email, set a timer) until we see justice! Show up to protests too but donât forget to take action after! I looked awayâŚ
I was thinking a lot about this moment. Somehow it feels like the agni kai was a watershed moment not only for Zuko, but also for Iroh.
I think this is something that Iroh is intensely ashamed about - and it is the source of all the patience he has with Zuko and his determination to make things right for him.
Because Zukoâs scar is not just a testament of Ozaiâs cruelty as a father, but is a scar on the soul of the entire Fire Nation.
Their supreme ruler publicly mutilates his own son, a 13-year old child, who merely spoke the truth about a nation that in a quest for power has lost perspective on the worth of human life -Â and everyone cheers.
The scarring and humiliation of the young prince (who should be really the symbol of the future to his people) is a grotesque public spectacle.
And Iroh, who was once next in line to leading these people, former great war hero, one of the most powerful benders, and still one of the nationâs leaders  - all he can do is to look away.
The boy who spoke the truth, who stood up for kindness, who tries to do the right thing, who refuses to fight his own father, who begs for forgiveness - he faces completely alone his horrible punishment, and nobody speaks up for him.Â
And I think this is Irohâs moment of truth - that disagreeing privately is not enough, he cannot look away anymore. He realizes that healing this boy could be the chance to heal the Fire Nation, that he is maybe destined to be their leader, but not from the throne of the Fire Lord. He has to get Zuko through this trauma and  show him kindness, love and acceptance in a way he has never experienced it. He has to teach him that speaking up and saying sorry should not and will not lead to harsh punishment, that kindness is not weakness and cruelty is not strength; that honor is not violence, but doing the right thing.Â
someone: bear in mindâŚ..
me:
Zuko + The GAang Friendship Headcanons
Aang
Aang and Zuko have lots of inside jokes about their trip to the Sun Warriors ruins that no one ever gets, and whenever someone asks for them to explain they exchange a panicky look because they know they told the Chief they would keep it all a secret.
As much as the inside jokes, Aang also uses the reference of âthis is the golden egg all over againâ whenever Zuko doesnât listens to him.
Aang definitely makes hella lots of jokes about being Zukoâs great-grandfather, doting like a toddler every once in a while.
At the same time, he teases Zuko about getting old as they both grow up.
Aangâs favorite color is yellow, and Zukoâs not very good at birthday gifts, so whenever Aangâs birthday comes around he just gives him something yellow no matter what it is.
Long into their friendship, Zuko told Aang about his fever and the dream he had of him turning into Aang, and that he thought it meant they werenât very different, not even back then. Aang was touched by this.
Aang is actually a very touchy-feely kind of friend, and itâs always hugging Zuko, much to the latterâs embarrassment.
Katara
Out of all the group, Kataraâs the one that calls Zuko âher best friendâ the most.
Sheâs also the one that looks after him the most, forcing him to get a rest whenever he becomes too stressed with his political duties and using some âtough loveâ whenever he needs it.
Zuko can get into some fights with his friends from time to time, but not with Katara. Sheâs the one thatâs always on his side, even if it is only to tell him heâs the one thatâs being a jerk.
Just like with Sokka, Katara just loves taking Zuko out of his comfort zone.
Itâs no secret that Kataraâs also a touchy-feely friend, having her close is what causes Zuko to slowly get used to hugs and physical contact.
Katara takes notice of Zukoâs mood changes very easily and whenever they come she serves as a mediator between him and the outside world.
They have lots of silent conversations. Sometimes they donât even need to look at each other for having them. Sometimes, whenever Zukoâs feeling down, Katara will just remain by his side in silence until he feels better.
Once, Zuko suffered an attempt against his life and had to be rushed to the infirmary. The guards told the GAang that they couldnât get in while he was treated. Katara had some words. Ever since then, the guards let her in to wherever the Fire Lord goes.
Sokka
Sokka makes sure his point is driven home when heâs talking with the Fire Nation politicians about how lucky they are to have Zuko as their Fire Lord.
The two of them begin most of their conversations with a âAs your best friendâŚâ âKataraâs my best friend.â âAs your best friendâŚâ exchange.
Sokka often asks Zuko his opinion on what weapon makes him look the most badass, the spear or the club? (The boomerang is just implicit.)
Zuko finds himself dragged into Sokkaâs shop-therapies quite often.
Thereâs some bad blood between Sokka and the royal painters because he says they never capture Zukoâs essence in their portraits and always uses his own art as the example they should follow.
Just like whenever someone insults the Moon Spirit, Sokka just goes off like a gun whenever someone insults the Fire Lord. âYou donât know what youâre talking about! Fire Lord Zuko is a brave warrior and an honorable man who rules the Fire Nation with just and kind⌠uh⌠fireiness!â
Sokka often makes up words just to describe how awesome Zuko is (and how awesome Sokka is by extension for being his best friend.) Zuko only tells him those are not words.
Sokka sometimes wishes he was Zukoâs bodyguard so he could protect him to the fullest.
Toph
When Zuko got a bruise on his arm for how much affection Toph was showing him, she simply changed to show her affection on his other arm.
Toph once felt bad after Sokka told her the books at the palaceâs library were really good, so Zuko read them to her since she couldnât read them herself.
Everybody knows Toph is surprisingly good at consoling people and she gives great advices. To the ones Zuko sometimes responds with âYouâre way too young to be so insightful.â
Zuko usually wonders if he can make Tophâs new nickname for him, Sparky Lord, a legal political title because she refuses to call him anything other than that.
Toph always has fun whisper-telling Zuko what politicians have the hots for him during the meetings. (They are a few.)
Tophâs feet are delicate instruments, she knows she has to rest them from time to time, and when those times come, she tells Zuko to give her a piggy-ride.
Is thanks to Toph that Zuko further overcame the trauma of his scar. It took her quite a while to find out Zuko had the whole left side of his face burned, but when she found out, she wanted to âseeâ it for herself, and the only way for this was touching it. Zuko at first reeled back but then acceded. Ever since, Toph touches Zukoâs scar when she wants to âseeâ him face to face, and thanks to that Zuko has gotten increasingly at ease with the contact.
Suki
The two of them exchange a lot of fed up looks when the rest of the GAang falls into anarchy.
The practice hand-to-hand combat together quite often as Zukoâs the only one from the rest of the group who can match Suki.
Suki maintains a refreshing share of professionalism when they are in front of other functionaries and while the rest of the team is way too casual.
Suki keeps herself more alert than usual when sheâs functioning as Zukoâs bodyguard.
Zuko gives THE BEST reviews about the Kyoshi Warriors to the leaders of the other nations.
Whenever he needs to talk about work-related stuff to get a fresh perspective, Sukiâs the first one he calls.
After they helped Appa get back to Aaang, Suki usually says protecting the Fire Lord has been the Kyoshi Warriorsâ most important mission.
And because I love this concept:
Ty Lee
Ty Lee is also a hugger and she always greets Zuko with a hug even sheâs in Kyoshi Warrior duty.
Ty Lee surprisingly is one of the people Zuko feels the most comfortable with for they have known each other for quite some time.
Sheâs always asking about Zukoâs love life and giving (uncalled) advices about what girls like in boys.
Ty Lee worries a lot about Zuko, especially when heâs visiting Azula at the mental institution, so she sometimes go with him despite her still being scared of Azula.
Ty Lee was over-the-moon when Zuko changed his hairstyle to the one of the comics.
She once admitted she actually had always preferred Zuko slightly over Azula, even when they were kids, for Zuko had always been kinder to everyone.
She never doubts in expressing how glad she is that she and Zuko are now real friends.
Ainât nothing gonna break my stride [sound on]

Pattern made by me. Please donât repost without credit! Also if you make this, I totally want to see pictures. <3
I used old t-shirts for the body and belly, and scrap polar fleece for the mane spikes, scar, and wings. The eyes are 20mm black teddy bear eyes; you could also make âem out of fabric if desired (just cut yourself some circles, or whatever shape you want). The fleece wings ended up semi-posable, which was a nice bonus.

A Wonderful Suffering
I should cool the fire
In my lips by kissing away
The raindrops that trace
The curve of your neck.
I should tell you to wear
A raincoat so I will not
Be tempted; I should tell
You to dance with me
In the rain. I should tell
You about the way fire
And water meet, the way
Steam revolutionized
The entire world, made room
For flight and art and dreams.
I should do anything.
But I sit here, silent, and
Burn. Â
