B.C.'s newly created Rental Protection Fund has dozens of affordable-housing organizations across the province vying for grants that would allow them to acquire buildings and offer units at rents below market rates. The fund is a result of the province allocating $500 million in January to provide one-time capital grants to non-profit housing organizations that would allow them purchase properties, upgrade them and protect renters living there over the long-term. About 80 organizations have applied so far for grants for projects that equate to about 1,500 homes in 30 buildings, said Katie Maslechko, CEO of the Rental Protection Fund.

A registered company, a written agreement that can hold said company accountable the safety of its workers in addition to acts of exploitation. still too vague? refer to the worker's rights policies as a framework

Section 286.2(1) & (2): Safeguarding Those Receiving Material Benefit:

Placing SAFTEY AND CONSENT at the core of this policy literally opens the industry to the regulated Free Market.

What does this look like?

The development of agencies for profit. Each of them competes to provide more autonomy and increased safety in hopes of attracting more workers than their competitors. This empowerment of the industry cataclysmically disrupts the Sex Trafficking industry and allows migrant workers to register and practice in a safe and inclusive environment

'The oath is a trigger of intergenerational trauma,' an Indigenous law student said

Three Indigenous women aspiring to become lawyers in Alberta are challenging the King’s Oath, because they say swearing an oath to the monarchy is modern colonialism.

Janice Makokis, Rachel Snow and Anita Cardinal, who graduated from law school in 2010, 2013 and 2022 respectively, are unable to practise law, they say, until the mandatory oath one swears when called to the bar is amended, or an alternative oath is provided.

“The oath is a trigger of intergenerational trauma for most Indigenous law students,” Cardinal said. “It is a trigger for me.”

Provincial legislation requires that lawyers vow to “be faithful and bear true allegiance” to the reigning monarch, their heirs and successors. After the death of Queen Elizabeth, those called to the bar must swear allegiance to King Charles.

I am incredibly proud to be Canadian today.

Our House of Commons voted unanimously to pass a bill banning conversion therapy and they sent it immediately to the Senate where it was also unanimously passed. The bill is now awaiting Royal Assent and it will become law.

"The new bill goes further than the original, banning conversion therapy for consenting adults, as well as for children and non-consenting adults.

It creates four new Criminal Code offences: causing a person to undergo conversion therapy, subjecting a minor to conversion therapy abroad, profiting from the provision of conversion therapy and advertising or promoting the practice, with penalties of two to five years in prison."

The policy states that it is an offence to take money from someone who uses sexual services to generate income. Also, it is an offence to rent or provide shelter or safe space for workers to practice safely. The fallacy of the argument is that it protects workers from exploitation and sex trafficking. A physical place of work that provides the necessary accommodations for safe practice, (cameras, security guards, transportation) is made illegal. Even a caring adult who simply wants to provide a place to work in a safer area becomes complicit. They can't even accept rent. So where does that leave the worker? What position does it place those who care for them? This policy literally makes safety illegal.

So obviously the solution is to take the work outside…right?

Nah… well….

s. 213(1) 1 Stopping or impeding traffic for the purpose of offering, providing or obtaining sexual services for consideration is a summary (minor) offence.

s. 213 (1.1) Communicating for the purpose of offering or providing sexual services for consideration in a public place, or in any place that is, is in view of, or is next to a school ground, playground or daycare centre is a summary offence

Canada says you can do BUT you have to do it without talking to your clients or stopping traffic.

So, unless you're ill at charades, have mastered interpretive dance or just so happen to be telepathic it's not happening…

This part of the bill forces operations into the very exploitative underworld it is supposed to dismantle. How exactly is this supposed to prevent forcing workers into the hands of slimy opportunists?

If a client come at you with some big American Psycho energy how do you report them to law enforcement without incriminating yourself? Is protection under law not a human right? or are you really trying to say that sex workers are not human?

s. 286.4:Everyone who knowingly advertises the sale of sexual services is liable to imprisonment

Here we can Identify a glaringly obvious gap in policy. It is not illegal to provide sexual services for benefit BUT it is illegal to assist workers in advertising. The result of this particular policy forces workers outdoors and into spaces where law enforcement is not present. Now think about this from the perspective of the worker. I must go outside in obscure places to work in unsafe conditions. Not only do they have to look out for the harms of violent strangers but now workers have to look over their shoulder for cops looking to disrupt business. If I decided that I wanted to create a classifieds site that served as a safe space for workers to qualify their clients and clearly and succinctly display their services, I could be prosecuted, and the internet service provider could be prosecuted This policy makes it illegal to practice harm reduction and this ultimately becomes a human rights issue.

s. 286.4, criminalizes “everyone who knowingly advertises an offer” to sell sexual services, with the possibility of imprisonment on conviction. Sex workers are exempt from prosecution for advertising their own services.

s. 286.2(1) & (2): Everyone who receives a material benefit (Profit) knowing it was derived from the purchase of sexual services is liable to imprisonment.

s. 286.2(3): Living with a sex worker, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, is presumed to be proof of such a benefit.

Here is where the boot of the policy is firmly placed on the neck of workers, and those who care for them. Before we get into how this policy streamlines workers into exploitation let's look at how the government of Canada defines work:

you are not paid to do but is a job that:

you would usually be paid for, or

would be valuable work experience for a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (for example, an unpaid intern).

Pay includes money or commission:

an employer gives you,

you receive for a service, or

you receive for any other activity.
