Volt took off his jacket; you took off your shoes. You thought you were ready. But maybe not.
“Wait, wait! Give me a minute, Volt!”
Volt playfully rolled his eyes, a smirk playing on his lips, “If you’re doubting whether my arms can carry you, let me put your fears to rest, live wire.”
You laughed from the other side of the club. To think, this was all because Volt had been thinking about what to perform for the next Hollyween Masquerade Dance Competition.
It started out innocently enough. You were seated at the bar, lazily moving the straw in your drink around. “Isn’t it at least…” You briefly count the months on one hand, “five months away?”
“Exactly, my dear spark. I must say, I’m never this unprepared.”
Eddie chuckled from behind the bar, where he’d been wiping cocktail glasses. “You’re like this every year. And yet…”
“Yes, yes, darling,” Volt said impatiently, “and yet I win every time. You fail to remember that I’m a bundle of nerves every year, too.”
“Well, baby, I’m saying that maybe it’s because you’ve never had anything to worry about.”
Volt smiled a little at that, “While I love your unabashed faith in me, my dear, I am still at a loss as to what to do.” You put your drink down, “Do you remember the movie Bodhi was talking about yesterday? The one where she dances with the resort’s dance instructor and they fall in love?”
“Well, live wire, I’m already in love with you, so that’s unfortunately out of the question.”
Eddie chuckled, “I think they’re only letting you know where to get inspiration, baby.” You laughed, nodded, “They went over a few routines, didn’t they?”
“Inspired as per usual! And here I thought you’d never volunteer to practice with me, darling. Let’s do the scene where the instructor lifts them up in the air.”
The smile on your face faltered. “There is no way we’re practicing that scene.”
“And why not, spark? Do you not trust me?”
Which brought you to right now - barefoot and a little scared, hyping yourself up at the other end of the club. Eddie pushed the tables aside. From where you were, the club suddenly seemed so much larger - and were you going crazy, or did Volt also seem to be farther away? “Volt, wait!” You bent over laughing, hands on your knees. “Give me a second.”
“Of course, darling. Here, I’ll remove my vest, too. Now, what was the instructor wearing, again? I may have to get a different costume.” Eddie smiled fondly at him, walking back to the bar to sit on one of the stools, “It was just a black shirt. And black pants, which you’re already wearing.” “Oh, marvelous!” Volt exclaimed. “You’ll have to lend me a black shirt, of course.” Eddie had a warm look in his eyes, realizing how excited Volt was becoming, “Of course, baby.” He turned to you, “Ready, live wire?”
“Wait!” You jogged in place, laughing nervously, “Countdown from five.”
Eddie leaned back on the counter, grinning now, his elbows behind him, “Five… four…”
You steeled yourself, jogged faster in place, shook the nerves away.
“Three… two…”
You looked Volt in the eye - he was grinning so wide, you’d think it was about something else entirely.
“One!”
You ran towards Volt, keeping your feet light, anticipating jumping into his arms at the other end of the room.
The next thing you knew, you were being hoisted up into the air.
