Epic III - Hadestown NL 🌹

Had the chance to see Hadestown NL last year and here’s a piece from last year to remember it by.

Was incredibly lucky to get tickets + they’re going to have a run next year too, if you wanna see it. (Waitlists are opening soon.) Translations and lyrics were also projected on screens, which was kinda cool.

hermes in hadestown is the exact opposite of an unreliable narrator. a tortured narrator. a little *too* reliable. incredibly aware of exactly what is happening at any given moment, vaguely spoiling it for you in the beginning, despairing every second of it. but ultimately motivated to continue to tell the story over and over and over with a smiling face for the sake of the audience, and for the sake of the characters themselves, singing it again to keep them alive. knowing how it will end, but singing it again so that the cycle may restart and eurydice may come back to life. enduring the misery of it all, over and over, holding the knowledge of what will come to pass but continuing anyway to see orpheus happy just one more time before it all goes down in flames again.

So. Hi. I listened to the off broadway album of Hadestown a couple weekends ago, then proceeded to dig a bit on youtube for a slime tutorial.

Insane. GUYS. Incredible cast, love the set, AND THE LYRICS???? Don’t get me started. Yes I mourn Persephone’s verse on Chant (reprise)/Chant II like my dead lover. DONT WE ALL???? I just think it’s so interesting to see how the Musical has evolved throughout its time.

Also what was uniquely horrifying about the off broadway set is that when Eurydice turns she doesn’t get lowered into the ground. INSTEAD. SHE HAS TO TURN AND WALK AWAY???? Evil!!! EVIL!!!!! Also instead of it being: “It’s you.” “It’s me.” THEY MIRROR PERSEPHONE AND HADES WITH THE “You’re early.” “I missed you” WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK.

Going to do a little series with the verses from Wedding song…ignore that I’m starting with the trees I KNOW THATS NOT THE ORDER I was just desperate to draw these two. I think I’m coming for reeva next….so keep an eye out for that….

hadestown aus saying the walk was three years was like one of those cases where it's like. neat but i am not incorporating that into my belief system

the craziest staging in hadestown will forever be eurydice running after orpheus in chant and him NOT turning around and that being the issue. he doesn’t see her!!! the reason she goes to hadestown is BECAUSE he doesn’t turn around!!! it’s an old song it’s a tragedy!!!!!!

like i need to elaborate. act one orpheus loses eurydice BECAUSE he trusts too much in his song, in himself, in them. he puts it all in his song and expects her to always be there, even when he doesnt see her. act two orpheus loses her because he DOESN’T trust his song, himself, in them. if he still trusted in his song, he would trust that hades would have let them go. and he doesn’t believe she’ll always be there, even when he can’t see her. HADESTOWN THE MASTERPIECE YOU ARE

jack + morgan as orpheus and eurydice i finished my painting yay! i think it came out really cool, i worked very hard on it!! do u like the lyre constellation projected on their faces? by complete chance it lined up pretty perfectly with their pose which i thought was really sweet! i spent around 25 hours on this which is the longest i’ve ever spent on a digital painting ah! i can’t wait to get prints made as soon as possible of it!! hope u love it and see all the various influences like preraphaelite and ignorant design and my own style coming through :’) i’ve loved seeing these two together online and i hope i’m lucky enough to see them in these roles irl one day! i hope they’re having the best time and enjoy the rest of their runs!!
