The Curious Case of Mollyless Metas

In honour of International Women’s Day, I would like to take a minute to observe the extent to which Molly Hooper is ignored in the zillion pages of Sherlock meta and comment in some corners of fandom, corners that normally take great pride in their feminism.. (And here I don’t mean metas on romantic pairings but rather general discussions of Sherlock).

I get that people don’t ship it, fine. And that they ship something else. OK. But like how can you just ignore her as a character and as an important part of Sherlock’s world? Why is this unique character with a unique relationship with Sherlock hardly ever mentioned in a lot of these metas and then mostly as poor lovelorn Molly? I mean, a lot of people were all over Mofftiss after TFP because “how can they reduce her to this poor girl with a crush” when what I’m seeing in a lot of these metas is people doing exactly that. Mofftiss haven’t done it, you can’t pin it on them. Together with Louise Brealey they’ve given us an interesting and important character. But even if she doesn’t appeal to you in and of herself, I’m guessing you’re interested in Sherlock’s world, right?

Let’s say that you have decided that Sherlock definitely didn’t mean the I love you. OK. Let’s leave that then. But just the fact that Molly and Sherlock share a scene with so much “emotional turmoil” (Gatiss), and this toward the end of Sherlock’s Sherrinford-Musgrave journey should catch your attention in terms of her significance. And the very least we can take from it is that Sherlock lost control and went through extreme emotional drama over this woman. Can we then at least consider the possibility that she is in some way important to Sherlock? Can we stop accusing Mofftiss of being the ones who are diminishing her? Because it’s not Mofftiss who have written pages and pages and pages of meta and comments on Sherlock, his relationships and his character without even mentioning this woman or if mentioning her then mostly condescendingly implying that she’s there merely to show Sherlock’s insensitivity or lack of interest in women or perhaps, in TFP, compassion.

Because, you know what, let’s even forget about TFP and THAT scene. Let’s just go back and look at their relationship, their previous scenes together. Everyone goes all weak at the knees over how amazing and touching it is when we get glimpses of Sherlock the man behind the mask, the heart beneath the armour etc. Well, take a look at what Mofftiss and Benedict have put in the show for you. Take a look at Sherlock’s scenes with Molly from ASiB onwards. You want the man behind the machine? Look at the man who apologises sincerely and the man who is kind and compassionate with Molly in the morgue in ASiB. You want a man who is surprised and unsettled that someone sees behind his armour? Well, lab scene with Molly in TRF. A man who willingly reveals himself as vulnerable, perhaps even scared and unsure of himself? Well, night lab scene with Molly in TRF, everyone. A man who is gentle, sincere and physically affectionate? Hallway scene with Molly in TEH is right there for you. A man who is playful and flirty? Go see crime solving day with Molly. A man who is completely on the back foot – lab scene with Molly in TSoT. Or is it scared and helpless but trusting you want? Mind palace with Molly in HLV. Compliant Sherlock anyone? Shilcott’s flat and Rosie’s christening – or “how Molly gets Sherlock Holmes to obey with a look or a single word”. Yes, these and other similar scenes are actually there in the show for us to see and learn about Sherlock. And Molly. And their relationship.

Of course she’s not a main character. Of course Sherlock’s and John’s friendship is the central relationship in the show. That’s why there are literally thousands of pages written about it. And that’s great. But I just can’t understand how there can be so much discussion about Sherlock’s character development and humanisation, about how Mofftiss have given us this amazing Sherlock who is so much more than a thinking machine, who pretends, even tries, to be a high-functioning sociopath but actually really really isn’t one… and all this discussion just ignores Molly whose interaction with him, in like 99.9% of their scenes together since S2 consistently and clearly shows you precisely that more human, “hidden” Sherlock.

This stuff is actually there in the text. The actual spoken text. (Not to mention how it is played by Benedict). But I’ll end with a question with some wild conjecture.

So, how come, when love and its redemptive force is the huge and much discussed topic of S4 in so many of these metas, how come they never wonder what it means for Sherlock to have this woman in his life who loves him so steadfastly and unconditionally? Who has loved him through all the shit he has been through and all the shit he has piled on others. (I’m deliberately not mentioning what he might feel for her. I’m not going near that here.) But this man, who seems to have felt he is undeserving of love unless he is larger than life and whom even John, for a long time, had difficulty accepting in all his humanity and fallibility, this same man is loved - truly, deeply loved by a woman who has seen his most flawed and human self, has known him at his worst and weakest, has seen him for all the beauty and horror that he is and loved him. Always. And could it even mean something to him to be reminded of this so poignantly directly before facing his worst trial and the traumatic secret of his childhood? So, you write pages and pages and pages about the redemptive power of love but never actually even mention this woman. Really?

Ninny - The Invisible Child

Ninny is a young girl who appears as a main character in Moomin book Tales from Moominvalley (1962), in a short story named after her called The Invisible Child. Ninny had an awful upbringing by her cruel aunt, which left the poor girl completely invisible. Aunt’s constant irony damaged the child so deeply that besides being invisible, Ninny is also terribly quiet and submissive. Her voice is terribly small and she only plays when told to do so. Ninny is a picture of a perfect child as she is obedient and does her chores even without being told, but the story also reminds the readers how sad it is for a young child to behave like this. Ninny does not laugh and her only reaction to playing after beind told to do so is to say, rather emotionlessly, how fun it is. Ninny never asks for anything or has opinions or shows creativity. This causes Little My to snap at her and wonder if Ninny even has any life in her. 

All of Ninny’s behaviour serves to show that she does not have an actual personality; nothing separates her as her own person. Ninny simply performs whatever is expected of her. Her aunt’s distant and cruel treatment has not offered Ninny a healthy mirror and her development has been severely damaged because of this. Aunt’s irony has also caused Ninny to hide herself entirely because everything she has expressed has lead to shaming and ridicule. Getting to a safe environment heals some of this. But even though Moominmamma’s kindness is able to bring out Ninny’s legs and her body up to her neck, her face remains missing.

Little My tries to get Ninny to get angry and tells her that she will never have her own face if she does not learn to fight. Eventually, this turns out to be true. When Ninny aggressively attacks Moominpappa to defend Moominmamma from his prank, her hissing face finally appears. After this she has a wild laugh at Pappa’s expense. Too-Ticky thinks that the girl may have turned out even worse than Little My, but she is finally visible and that is all that matters.

It is most likely not a coincidence that the two characters who help Ninny the most are Too-Ticky and Moominmamma, who’s real life counterparts were Tove Jansson’s most beloved people Tuulikki and Ham. There is a lot of writer herself in Ninny and Tove even wrote in her notes that she would need to learn to show her anger and gain her face like Ninny. This may explain why Ninny and her predicament are portrayed with such attention and understanding.

Ninny’s story has been lovingly analyzed in more academic papers than one can possibly list and has become a classic about children and their development. At the core, The Invisible Child is a story about how coldness and irony mercilessly devastate the fragile selfhood of a child. A child needs to feel that they are so safe and loved that they are also allowed to be difficult and get angry. Ninny has been robbed of a real care all her childhood and her selfhood is completely stunted. It’s only under Moomin family’s patient acceptance and Moominmamma’s gentle loving that Ninny can finally find herself again. Besides academics, many people who have grown up in emotionally abusive homes seem to strongly relate to The Invisible child and her experiences.

Honestly...

I can’t understand how some people are totally blind to the fact that Molly is Sherlock’s “love interest”. Their relationship is the most developed one and it has been quite obvious since season three. Does people notice that Molly is the one who humanizates him the most? the one who made Sherlock apologize without saying a single word? the one who knows him deeply? the only one he trust  enough to share his fake suicide idea  with? Do they realize that Sherlock knows what Molly means to him and how much she knows him and that is why he changed his attitud towards her in season three? Do they realize that even John came to notice that Molly is the one who can see through his bullshit? Does people realize that Sherlock was clearly upset when Molly was engaged to Tom? Do they realize the weird double sensed words between them, like “what de you need - You”, “The one person he thought didnt matter at all to me was the one person who mattered the most” and “Sorry your engagement is over, though fairly grateful for the lack of a ring” were writting to show us “something”? And finally, do they realize that the whole point of their scene in “The final problem” was Sherlock saying “i love you” for real as it was the episode in which he would complete his process of humanization? I guess they don’t. They just see but not observe.

Some say he just realized he loves her as a friend. ¡PFFF! Sherlock has considered her a friend since a loooooot of time and clearly cares about her. He just told her they are friends: “Of course you’re not an experiment, you re my friend…we’re friends, but…please… say those words”. And they think he is hust realizing it now??? ¡pf! i wonder is they even watch the show.

They can easily say Molly forced Sherlock to say “i love you” so Sherlock’s words are fake, but they fail to notice that Molly is also been forced, that she actually tried a lot to avoid saying it…because it was true. Just a few understand that Sherlock and Molly are living exactly the same in that one scene. Yes, it was forced, but it doesn’t mean it’s false. Do they really expect them having dinner with candles and roses? This is “Sherlock” not a regular love movie or a sitcom. This was the confession, very unusual, and quite “Sherlock”-like.

And two more things:

Why do you think Molly appears to be so happy at the end of the episode and walking right towards a certain someone?

Weird right??!! if she was soooooooooooo humilliated before, why would  she be so happy??!!

Do you really think Moffat did that scene because he is a misogynist and he has fun humilliating nobody else but Molly? That he , Gatis and everyone else  are going to waste money, character development and plot issues for a character who is there just to be humilliated or “mirroring” a certain other character? Come on, get your head out of you ass.

i needed to say all of this, cause i’ve been reading  pathetic excuses and interpretations of those who try desperately to deny Sherlock and Molly’s love. and. it. is. enough :)

I can’t really afford for all of them right now. I need at least 500zł (last time i said 500$ and it was my mistake, I’m sorry) each month.  And I really need to use them because I already feel a little better and I don’t want to be depressed anymore.And I don’t really have money for even food. I mostly eat only twice a day.I hope this is enough proof for people who are attacking me saying that I’m lying.I’m from Poland and here if you go to the private doctor you need to pay 100% for the meds even with the insurance. And the rest of them is still expensive even with 10 or 30% being cheaper. Also we don’t have any coupons for meds and any apps. You have that in America, that’s great. Six months ago I asked you to help me because my parents kicked me out after they found out I’ve fallen in love with a girl. I was working in their place and I lost that job too.

My boyfriend at that moment told everyone I know about this and spread some lies. He took my dog and a lot of my stuff. He stalked me. He found my tumblr as well and I had to make a new account.

I live in my friend house but it was really small so I slept on the floor in the pantry for the last five months.

Now I live in a tiny tiny room and have half time job as a waitress.

Two months ago I finally went to psychiatrist and I was diagnosed with severe depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder. It was a lot to finally have someone to talk to about everything. But I don’t have the money for all of these meds. I already take asthma medications for couple of years and others for my sensitive stomach. The meds from psychiatrist are quite expensive because I had to choose private payd visit instead of free because they told I had to wait four months for it. And I can’t wait that long. I have suicide thoughts and I’m afraid what I could do. And I’m still waiting for the therapy.

An amused smirk twitched at one corner of Sherlock’s lips as he watched Molly fail in her attempt to stifle a yawn.

“Why don’t you just stop fighting it and go to sleep?”

“’m fine,” Molly mumbled around another uncontainable yawn.

“I’m not Rosie, you know,” Sherlock snapped mildly. “I’m not an infant. You do not have to keep an eye on me every second.”

Molly caught her bottom lip between her teeth, either in contemplation or to bite back a retort, Sherlock wasn’t entirely sure.

“Well, maybe… Maybe I will just kip here for a bit.” She put aside the book she had been reading and stretched out on the sofa, wriggling around for a moment to find a comfortable position.

“You can use my bed,” Sherlock offered, distractedly plucking at the strings of his violin. “You’ll be much more comfortable.”

Molly’s head popped up, her eyes slightly wide. “W-what about you?”

Sherlock huffed. “I highly doubt I will be doing any sleeping tonight.”

“Oh. Then maybe I should stay up and keep you company,” Molly purposed, looking unsure about leaving Sherlock on his own even if she would just be in the next room.

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Sherlock dismissed. “There’s no need for the both of us to lose sleep. Especially when you’re tired and I’m not. I’ll be fine.”

Molly sighed. “Okay. If you’re certain.”

“I am.”

Molly hauled herself up from the sofa and crossed the room. “Don’t hesitate to wake me if you feel any urges.”

Sherlock arched his brows at her.

“Oh you know what I mean,” Molly huffed, rolling her eyes, trying to appear exasperated, but the touch of pink tinting the tips of her ears gave away her embarrassment.

Sherlock smiled. “Yes. Will do, Molly. Goodnight.”

Molly sighed. “Night, Sherlock.”
