If you can get down to the Rook and Gaskill in York this weekend, then you’ll be in for a very special event…
The Rook and Gaskill, on Lawrence Street in the historic city of York, has been a pub for the past two centuries. Although it’s had different names during that time (before settling on the current name, unusually taken from the surnames of the last two men to be hanged at Greendykes in York) it has a rich history of serving the community – in many senses – all within view of the historic Walmgate Bar. Since an extensive bar refit by current landlord Paul Marshall at the end of 2017, the pub has been able to serve up to 30 beers and ciders at any given time and with the recently completed interior make-over it is certainly set to carry on into the future with aplomb.

This beer capacity will be put to good use this weekend, with 15 of those taps reserved for a wide range of Bad Seed beers. This Malton-based brewery are celebrating their fifth anniversary on this weekend, and the Rook is going to be the venue for the upcoming birthday bash. The UK has seen some fantastic new breweries get set up over the past few years, and Bad Seed have worked hard to establish themselves as one of the best amongst them. Originally starting out as home brewers, owners James and Chris have gradually built up their business, garnering a reputation for innovative recipes and flavours during that time. In 2015, they moved from smaller kit to a 12BBL brew set-up which, in their words, they now “call home”.

There’ll be some new launches and established favourites on offer this weekend, ranging from Become the Legend, an unusual but sessionable Rhubarb and Hibiscus grisette, to the familiar fruity notes of their Session IPA, to the even fruitier Juice Freak, a slightly stronger brew at 6%. Exclusively, Bad Seed will also be launching their Code Blue, a blueberry witbier made in collaboration with the Rook and Gaskill’s landlord Paul. This is a one-off, and likely to move quite quickly, so ensure you get down on Saturday to give it a try while you can. As well as the range of beers, the Rook will be laying on a BBQ, live music and some exclusive new dishes made with Bad Seed beers. The festivities will continue throughout the weekend, and we really look forward to seeing some of you there.
The event will start on Saturday 24th June at 1pm and end on the Sunday 25th June, for any further info use one of the contacts below or just pop into the Rook and ask!
