densi kisses | season 8
Deeks wasn’t worried that Kensi couldn’t handle the bad guys without him today. He was far more worried that she’d be handling the bad guys without him forever.
When he went through the police academy, Deeks was a few years older than a number of his “classmates” and a few years younger than others. The younger ones were either from a family of cops who joined as soon as they could or just out of college starting their adult careers. He had law school and few years being a lawyer under his belt. Josh Warren, who was now flying up the ranks in Robbery-Homicide, had four years at Whittier College, three years at Starbucks and a year at the Macy’s in Beverly Center.
The older ones were almost all former military. Carmen Cruz, former New Yorker, former Marine and all around badass, kept wondering when the training sessions were going to be difficult. She wasn’t bragging, she was bored. Hell, he gave Carmen’s name to Hetty once as someone Hetty could keep her eye on. To Carmen and her fellow military alums, the police academy was just another training exercise after spending years in Iraq or Afghanistan or some other place he never thought he’d be.
Deeks had been to Afghanistan and a few other places he never thought he’d be. Glynco was certainly a place he didn’t think he’d be to start the New Year. With Hetty off on yet another grand adventure Deeks no doubt would end with the team showing up for an equally grand rescue, there wasn’t the annual trip to FLETC planned where he’d get a class in explosives, vehicle ambush countermeasures or advance marksmanship.
No, now here was here for a month to be “trained” for a job he had for the last ten-years. Outside of going to school, NCIS was the longest time-commitment he had in his life. Hopefully his marriage would pass that at some point but right now, the decade of NCIS was finding a home that was professionally and personally fulfilling. And his wife was there. Which was nice.
Deeks was killing it with the classroom work with the dozen or so accountants and lawyers in his class who were just out of school. They were smart, they were shiny new. He was smart but he was well worn. He knew all the rules for law enforcement in the field – kept quiet on the ones he broke or saw the team break – and was gliding through those classes with ease.
It was the daily running, jumping, fighting that was wearing Deeks out. He knew how to fight. He knew how to chase down a suspect. And honestly, since Rountree joined the team, Deeks wasn’t the fastest guy anymore so he would trail Roundtree and that worked. One of the instructors was sympathetic. The instructor knew Hetty and said if Deeks had a bunch of years with her on his resume, he was ready for the field. Hell, he was already there, the instructor told him. Deeks agreed. But he was doing the work.
At the gym, Marybeth Gibbons, Emory Law, saw the scar on his arm from the warehouse explosion. She was planning for a career as an investigator at the IRS so she was pretty sure she wasn’t going to face a gunrunner who liked to blow up law enforcement. She was looking to go to New York and investigate crypto bros.
The lawyer in Deeks wanted to argue that Hetty threw him into the deep end of the pool when he became the liaison. He was shot, blown up, had unauthorized dental work and survived the octagon with Sam Hanna. Martin A. Deeks – up to the job.
But he’d run, jump, fight and be a good student in class – Kensi was out in the field without him right now. It was his assignment to make sure that situation ended as soon as possible.
