Because Alex Monty will never ever die for me I am going to talk about one of my favourite insanely clever things she did. There are these BRILLIANT parallels where things she does that seem innocent or fun come back and become actually a bit insidious.
In pre jft scene, she would shout 'NO!' at Charles, really playful and fun, and get very in his face when he's protesting about going on a bar crawl, and it is such a familiar moment - and then in the bloody tea as Monty leaves and he says 'ok Charlie, plan is back on' he again leans right into Charles' face and says 'ok' in that exact same abrasive tone as 'no' and it becomes cruel and humiliating and still so familiar, but the moment is completely twisted.
There's a similar thing where in making a man Monty gives this sly little look at Charles on 'the nation's in need of a marvellous man' (implying he is the man the nation needs, and the man they are making), it's such a sweet insular moment from Monty revealing his appreciation for Charles. Then, in act as if, there is the return of this secret look on 'there's so much at stake when you're making a man' but this time it's almost bitter.
And then obviously everyone and their mother knows about the tie motif but it is so brilliant to me how it transforms from a correcting, guiding gesture to controlling and admonishing (though always possessive).
I'm sure there are more I'm forgetting but I just think it's such a brilliant way of exposing how calculated every one of Monty's moves are, and how (as Alex once said) 'Ewen's wonderful until he's not'.
god this always makes (MADE?) me sick. i think another is one that she started doing not too long ago, where in pre-jft monty would sort of playfully punch charles' chin or playfully kick him to cheer him up. and then alex started putting that in the act as if scene too before "father's tired". i don't think this one is as insidious as the others but it is still monty trying to manipulate charles into trusting him by having him recall, through casual physicality, the intimate moments they had together. the difference between this and the other examples is that this one isn't active manipulation. it's offhanded and subconscious and uncalculated. it's almost reflexive. he really is just trying to have the same relationship with charles that they've always had, by using these physical moments to ask charles without asking him to just forget all the bad moments, and to trust him
It's like when you go to Antarctica and have to get your appendix removed
i've heard that charles saying "ewen" pre-jft has officially been changed to monty on the west end as of tonight to match tour and bway. and im of course thinking about alex young constantly talking about how important charles first-naming monty was for that moment, in forcing monty to be personal and vulnerable at a time when he was desperately scared to be. and now that's just gone!
