I'm seriously losing my fucking mind right now. Adam Driver wanted to do a movie searching for Ben Solo & disney turned him down. WTF DO YOU MEAN ADAM DRIVER WANTED A BEN SOLO MOVIE & DISNEY SAID NO?!?!?! how do you fuck up this badly?! this was a perfect opportunity to fix what TROS did & bring back several families that ultimately went extinct because of the dumbass decisions made in the last movie.

Ben Solo was seriously the best star wars character ever created. his entire arc struggling between the light & dark, as well his relationship with Rey, was so fascinating to watch. he did not deserve an ending of pain & death. he was supposed to be a reverse Anakin. he was supposed to bring balance & live with the person he loves.

knowing Adam loved Ben so much he tried to bring him back makes my heart happy but also saddens me so much. I feel sick. disney sucks so bad.

Adam Driver on Jarmusch, ‘Star Wars’ and putting filmmakers first

“I always was interested in doing another ‘Star Wars,’” says Driver, who starred as Kylo Ren in the trilogy kicked off by “The Force Awakens.” “I had been talking about doing another one since 2021. Kathleen (Kennedy) had reached out. I always said: With a great director and a great story, I’d be there in a second. I loved that character and loved playing him.” Driver says he took a concept to Soderbergh for a film that would take place after 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker.” That movie culminated in Ren’s redemption and apparent death. Driver had undertaken the trilogy with an arc in mind for Ren that inverted the journey of Darth Vader. As the trilogy evolved, it didn’t play out that way. Driver felt there was unfinished business for Kylo Ren, or as he was known before turning to the Dark Side, Ben Solo. Soderbergh and Rebecca Blunt outlined a story that the group then pitched to Kennedy, Lucasfilm vice president Cary Beck and Lucasfilm chief creative officer Dave Filoni. They were interested, so the filmmakers then pulled in Scott Z. Burns to write a script. Driver calls the result “one of the coolest (expletive) scripts I had ever been a part of.” “We presented the script to Lucasfilm. They loved the idea. They totally understood our angle and why we were doing it,” Driver says. “We took it to Bob Iger and Alan Bergman and they said no. They didn’t see how Ben Solo was alive. And that was that.” “It was called ‘The Hunt for Ben Solo’ and it was really cool,” adds Driver. “But it is no more, so I can finally talk about it.” Soderbergh, in a statement, said: “I really enjoyed making the movie in my head. I’m just sorry the fans won’t get to see it.” Representatives for Disney and Lucasfilm declined comment.

[...] For Driver, who starred in Soderbergh’s 2017 heist comedy “Logan Lucky,” the decision was mystifying. Who wouldn’t want to see a Soderbergh-directed “Star Wars” film?

“We wanted to be judicial about how to spend money and be economical with it, and do it for less than most but in the same spirit of what those movies are, which is handmade and character-driven,” Driver says. “‘Empire Strikes Back’ being, in my opinion, the standard of what those movies were. But he is, to me, one of my favorite directors of all time. He lives his code, lives his ethics, doesn’t compromise.”

I don't know exactly how to articulate this but... if you repeatedly show historical fiction women rejecting traditionally female skills/duties and doing swords instead, because swords is obviously the Most Important Thing, you are kind of implying that all the work that has been traditionally done by female hands for millennia was useless all along and not, you know, keeping civilization going. Because it's usually rejected not as a personal preference but as This Is The Important Stuff (male work) and That is The Dumb Useless Stuff (women's work) and that kind of bothers me. The message was supposed to be Vital But Underpaid and Underappreciated, not women's work is insignificant so let's all go do swords.

James Gunn’s biggest strength is taking the most obscure and bizarre characters and making an audience fall in love with them. He literally brings out the worst in them, shows us why they’re the way they are and then rehabilitates them for the viewers by focusing solely on their life. It’s so unique.

I was wondering how he’d apply this method to someone as colossal and well know as Superman but he’s managed to use the same technique, making a character that’s too big and grandiose for an audience to relate to… relatable. And he did this without losing his “super” side. He just honed into his humanity, especially while he was in “super” mode.

The first gem of this working? The fucking intro. I sat up straight when it went from “3 centuries ago…” to “3 minutes ago, Superman just lost his first fight.” Wow. Finally. An unexpected beginning for a very predictable character.

Then? The scene between Lois and Clark. The sheer helplessness of someone like Superman against twisted words meant to goad and frustrate. Don’t we all deal with the exact same things on an almost daily basis? Not only is this Lois critical of Superman but also willing to tell him as much. Plus, she isn’t sure if she loves him while knowing that he, someone a majority of the world would give anything to be with, definitely loves her.

Then!!! They show him fight a Kaiju-esque creature with only the intention to knock it out. I mean, he sucker punches it and then rushes to stop it from falling on a building full of people… then he saves a squirrel. What in the Superman is going oooon 😭

THENNN!!!!!!! They show us his parents. His gorgeous GORGEOUS midwestern-ass, delicate lil normal looking parents in their tiny farm house calling their son, proud of his writing and terrified for his life. More than anything else, they made me see who Clark Kent was and why his Superman was so precious about every kind of life. This dorky, self-conscious, overthinking, frustrated, emotional, but-will-still-not-curse Superman is a gem. Clark is a gem.

Plus, David’s acting is phenomenal. Yes yes his switch up from Superman to Clark is cool but more than that? The frustration in every line of his face when he talks to Lois, the exasperation whenever Krypto is around, the sheer delight at writing his article and getting it published on the front page, the desperation to find his cousin’s pet, the agony of being around Kryptonite, the most genuine and wholesome earnestness that literally CARRIED the movie…

Sigh. I’m officially a Superman fan and it’s because of the writing, direction, and acting in this comic-accurate portrayal of Clark-you-clumsy-oaf-Kent.
