Teeth grinding, he held back a few choice words, followed up with a tone that was far from as confident as he’d like it to sound. “An’ how exactly d’you know my ma ain’t goin’ round cursin’ as much as I do?”

Jayne stumbled through the ship’s corridors, hoping not to alert any of the crew members. He had a pounding headache, easily attributed to the sheer amount of hard liquor he’d consumed the... last few nights.

And then flying towards him came Vi. He tried his damnedest to put on a smile--vaguely convincing at best. The impact rolled his stomach, but he quelled it enough to lean down and pat her lightly on the head. “Yeah, yeah. ‘M back, glad t’see someone noticed.” He let a half-hearted snort of a laugh, no malice in his tone. “You been keepin’ the ship held t’gether?”

Inara’s relationship with the merc was always a tense one; if she didn’t see eye-to-eye with the captain about her work, when he was only mildly insulting in comparison to Jayne.. She treated his comments rather dismissively, instead of starting up an argument. Malcolm should have more restraint, should know to respect his crew. It wasn’t so certain whether or not Jayne should. Though he asked the sleazy questions with great perverse curiosity, the Companion couldn’t find it in herself to feel properly angry, the inquisitiveness was almost innocent, enthusiastic. Like a school boy who didn’t know any better.

She’d never spill the secrets of her profession, it wasn’t something she could do even if she wanted to. Anyway, it was more fun to return the teasing, use her quick wit to put him in his place. Always nice to see a self-confident ‘alpha male’ made to squirm in the way he sometimes made sweet little Kaylee do so. In a strange way, though it may not seem so.. Not shouting at him like she did Mal showed some fondness for the big, reckless idiot.

THERE’S SOMETHIN’ to be said ‘bout a ship without jayne aboard. lotsa things, actually. mostly good things, an’ some HATEFUL things too. man never was well-liked on serenity, but lord if a crowd of folk didn’t show up for the service back on that tiny rock he’d called HOME. seemed quieter here without him, even though they were only one less. maybe because when he’d gone out it’d been in a BLAZE of gunfire, followed by frantic hollerin’ by the doc whose arms were slick with blood up to his pristine white shirtsleeves. CHAOS whilst everyone flitted and fluttered, suddenly eager to join up around their own an’d do everythin’ in their power to keep him here. family was a STRANGE thing, that way. suppose that’s what they were, after all. a family. maybe that’s why, despite the merc’s smarmy demeanor and toxic attributes, mal found himself SORRY to see him go.

walking away from the infirmary where simon’s role had suddenly shifted from doctor to UNDERTAKER, the captain listened to the ship as she began to settle. all that noise and RIOT had finally ceased echoing ‘round the interior and all they were left with was the distant hum of her engines. he pauses at the doorway to jayne’s bunk, a hand on the handle an’ he’s staring down the hallway. DEATH had a way of rattlin’ you, regardless of who it was. mal couldn’t quite seem to focus on the present moment. he pushed the door inward and climbed down the ladder. the place looked just as he’d left it, a MESS. it was warm down here, a heady stuffiness attributed to the door bein’ closed for so long.

steel-eyed gaze fell upon the callahan full-bore auto lock layin’ cross-ways on the bunk. he bent slowly to pick it up, running a calloused thumb pad along the metal casing. needed a CLEANING. an’ someone to take CARE of it. the captain turned back toward the ladder, gun slung lovingly in the crook of his arm. it was the LEAST he could do.
