Women Making History
Mu Sochua
Mu Sochua (b. 1954) is a former Cambodian politician and activist for womenβs rights. She was forced to flee to the US as a young adult because of the harsh political environment in Cambodia, and graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in social work. From there, she returned to Cambodia where she:
Fought to end human trafficking between Cambodia and other Southeast Asian countries
Mobilized women in Cambodia to run for office, convincing 12,000 women to run in 2002 (over 900 were elected!)
Helped to write and pass laws that protected women
Became Minister of Womenβs and Veterans Affairs and a member of Parliament, where she actively tried to end government corruption
Unfortunately, the political climate in Cambodia is so turbulent that Sochua had to flee her country last year, going into exile so she wouldnβt be arrested. She is working from afar now, trying to mobilize grassroots efforts around the country and the world.Β
Mu Sochua has done incredible things for Cambodia, and she is still fighting! What other women are putting up a fight? Send a message or ask to @yesstrongwomen!

I felt utterly alone, as if I was the last person alive on earth. I canβt describe that feeling of total loneliness. I just wanted to disappear into thin air and not think about anything.

We save forests! Cambodia is losing its forests faster than any other country on earth. Weβre working to stop that. We have helped Cambodia improve land management and preserve more than 2.6 million hectares of woodland. We have trained and equipped hundreds of forest rangers to stop illegal loggers. We are working in more than 100 Community Forests to help residents gain land titles. And we have helped over 15,000 rural residents find new sources of income other than harvesting timber. Watch out for #RedHerringsKH.
Looking up at the stars, I know quite well That, for all they care, I can go to hell, But on earth indifference is the least We have to dread from man or beast. How should we like it were stars to burn With a passion for us we could not return? If equal affection cannot be, Let the more loving one be me. Admirer as I think I am Of stars that do not give a damn, I cannot, now I see them, say I missed one terribly all day. Were all stars to disappear or die, I should learn to look at an empty sky And feel its total dark sublime, Though this might take me a little time.

- Footprints in the Sand -
One night I dreamed a dream. As I was walking along the beach with my Lord. Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life. For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, One belonging to me and one to my Lord.
After the last scene of my life flashed before me, I looked back at the footprints in the sand. I noticed that at many times along the path of my life, especially at the very lowest and saddest times, there was only one set of footprints.
This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it. βLord, you said once I decided to follow you, Youβd walk with me all the way. But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life, there was only one set of footprints. I donβt understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me.β
He whispered, βMy precious child, I love you and will never leave you Never, ever, during your trials and testings. When you saw only one set of footprints, It was then that I carried you.β
