Wow, my 7 year old grandson got a citation for, get this,...."disrespecting the flag." Okay so he was asked if he knew what the flag represented, what the stars and stripes meant? His reply, "No" So if a failing school system hasn't taught a second grader the meaning behind the flag and what the flag represents to our country, then how can the child be held responsible for "disrespecting" it? He didn't throw rotten eggs at it, set it on fire, or stomp on it like it was trash. Had he done something like this I could maybe understand, but making a sound while the pledge of allegiance is being recited does not automatically mean he's disrespecting the flag. My grandson is a little high strung, if you know him then you know what I mean. But one thing he is most definitely not is "a bad kid." With all that, when it comes down to it, regardless of his age and esp. because society holds double standards for children of color, my grandson has a right quaranteed by the blood shed of veterans and civil rights leaders to chose if he'd like to honor a set of dictated rituals set in place by the government in an attempt to conform and brainwash Americans at an early age. He can't pray to God, but he has to perform a certain way around a flag, really?! God is highest. So, If you're an educator of grade school children and your looking at football on Sunday and the conversation between the commentators is about a pro NFL player not standing during the Star Spangled whatever, and you don't agree, keep that personal political belief of yours at home where it belongs. Don't try and stand by your sensitive stance on a touchy subject by repremanding a 7 year old male of color and confusing him on why you have punished him. Let my grandson be the child he is. He did nothing wrong. So don't make him think he's bad and he committed some horrible crime. Now if you want to say he was being disrespectful to those reciting the pledge by making noise and not being considerate of their choice, then state just that and I will make sure he understands. Why? Because I have and will always educate my family, children and grandchildren on right and wrong.
