“Foul?!” Ethan exclaimed after he’d let out a mock gasp and clutched his chest in his typically dramatic manner. “I can’t believe you’d go there, Lucas Andrews. I’m shocked and appalled,” he continued joking with a shake of his head and a broad grin. “Don’t remind me…I feel like artificial flavors have taken over anyways but I try to be mostly good for the rest of the year so I think I deserve a little unhealthy treat every once in a while, even if no one in my life really seems to share that sentiment,” he said with a roll of his eyes, well aware that Ian wouldn’t necessarily approve either. Confident about his choice and Lucas’s suggestion, Ethan hadn’t even considered putting the responsibility on Lucas so when he announced he’d be paying for his coffee, the younger male’s eyes widened. “Don’t be silly! You really don’t have to do that. I’m sure I’ll be perfectly happy with it,” he attempted to talk his friend out of it but with the way Lucas was already looking for his wallet, there was no way out now so he simply smiled fondly and sighed. “Fine. But in case I do like it, the next coffee we’re getting is on me,” Ethan insisted in return. “Their blends are amazing,” he agreed. “I should honestly try a lot more but I gotta be honest…I’m not big on black coffee. You know my sweet tooth is out of control usually, I can’t help it so some milk and a shot of espresso are enough to keep me awake and happy.”
“You’ve got it all wrong. I have no qualms with unhealthy, I happen to think it’s healthy to give the body what it craves in moderation. But real ingredients, man. Treat yourself to those once in a while.” The last line was said with a lightened tone, clearly showing his enjoyment in shedding just a touch of judgement back on his friend. Lucas felt his smile return in full when he watched Ethan roll his eyes, he couldn’t recall a time where being around Ethan hadn’t made him feel lighter. It was easy to smile, laugh, and enjoy things around someone who had been a constant in his life for almost all of it -- which was a rarity for the older man to have. He lifted his palm up to halt Ethan from refusing, giving a slight shake of his head to let him know that he wasn’t going to win this one. “You’ve got yourself a deal.” Lucas agreed with a grin, listening to Ethan as he expressed his taste while waiting his turn at the counter. “I understand, many people enjoy more cream and sugar in their coffee than the actual coffee. At times I add some myself but if it’s really good stuff, I prefer it black.” The male mused along, taking a glance around the coffee shop. “Would you like to secure a table for us? I’ll be right over as soon as I have our morning medicine in hand.”
