"The Birth of the Colossus"
Little word about he painting
Ok so that far in my career as an artist that was far the most difficult painting. I lost count how many hours I spend on it. It wasn’t due to rendering but problem solving. I would spend one day rendering sorceress then I would realize that I have to start over because she didn’t look presentable. I am not satisfied with this painting but I am happy I spend hours trying to figure out stuff and making it look good. I stepped out of my comfort zone: small characters, avoiding gigantic forms and different light condition. I faced my shortcomings big time; I basically wanted to throw my pc out of window. It opened my eyes on the things I need to practice.
Water Hag
BLUEBERRY HAG
"Scouting the Harbor" Little word about painting: I am not completely satisfied with it but I will share some insights on this painting, which for some of you might be helpful.I went against thirds rules and I wanted to see if the painting is going to work. Places of interest are not directly on the thirds points. Judge it yourself if you like it or not :DAll right, so I was quitting on this painting like 4 times. I am happy I didn’t because it was a good training of will and professionalism.I normally start my day with thumbnails. I chose one that reminded me of big submarine. I gave myself limits such as what is the story and how do I convey the story with composition, color etc. After initial color slap (I used photos for color and I was painting over them) I couldn’t get this painting to work. Even thought I had strong thumbnail sketch I had problems with contrast. I wanted to drop it and start a new one BUT it is important that you make it as good as you can. After all we ought to solve problems :) After clearing my head I tackled problems, one at the time; color, contrast and many other things that were wrong with it. Step by step I was improving this painting. I added tons of compositional stuff along the way. For example little wood things to make the water more interesting as well as to indicate perspective. I could be writing essay on this but I won’t do that haha. If you have any questions you can drop me a line on my facebook.
