i like the idea that bill thinks he relates more to gatsby when in actuality he relates more to daisy. because relating to daisy reveals too much about his own boundaries, feelings, and what he doesn’t feel comfortable with. being put on a pedestal, deified, villainized, muse or monster, good or evil; not being allowed to be complex. it’s not very comfortable to admit to yourself “people don’t understand me the way i wish they did” especially when you have spent so long convincing yourself and others that you are the monster everyone thinks you are.
“Hmm, well, Daisy has a bit of a contradiction. She is desired by all but seen by none. She feels a lack of connection which she then tries to make up for with a superficiality. She wants to be adored, but when you're put on a pedestal you're never truly appreciated. So she's torn between that safety and desiring the chaos that would make her feel truly alive, chaos represented by Gatsby, which she goes towards, and then… and then decides, no, no, too much."
some people find it unusual that bill is being compared to daisy but i think it suits him just fine.
