“Mm… Let me think about it.” Cassius, after taking a moment to look at his watch, looked up at the person asking. “Nope, can’t. I’m too busy not caring, and that’s gonna take several hours at least.” He shook his head. “Unless you have the money for my services, you better find someone else.”
Lucius sidled up beside Cassius. “Do you manage to lure in a great many customers by being rude to them? It seems an unusual sales tactic.”
“Very good. I’ll be sure to keep that in mind for the future if I am ever trying to source something, I’ll know to come to you.” Narcissa smiled.
“I don’t know? Sorry, you’ve just completely thrown me with your jokes and then your impossible to source gifts.” Shaking her head, she chuckled lightly. “I mean there is always one of my sisters, or Emma, or… “ She drifted off before shrugging. She knew who she was going to ask, of course she did, but she was waiting for the right moment.
“Oh, well.” He couldn’t help it. He was feeling jealous. He had secretly hoped that Narcissa would ask him to accompany her (a large part of the reason that there were only two tickets). But perhaps it was not meant to be. “Whoever you choose to take will be lucky indeed.”

Antonin just raised an eyebrow. This kid had so much to learn, especially when it came to how low down he actually was against Antonin, Cassius and Ilona. “I’ve been in this game a long time. I don’t need you testing me.” As one of the few spies for the Dark Lord, he knew what he was capable of. If anything Lucius was the one who needed to be tested. Antonin flicked his wand at the boxes and the books moved out of them into their spots on the shelves. Lucius helped the others into the castle, so he’d give the kid credit for that but Lucius needed to earn Antonin’s respect.
“Live a little, No you’d rather be in the ministry talking instead of doing.” When Lucius told Antonin to be discreet, the flicker was back in his coal black eyes. The little flame of anger. His jaw clenched while his back was towards the other. When he turned, Antonin had the mischievous smile back, grinning from ear to ear. When he stole something, the person who was robbed rarely knew it had happened. “Thank you for your words of wisdom. Who knows what I might of done without such wise advice. I might have just charged into the place and with aurors on my tail, fly to you and hand you the book, thus taking us both out. But because of you I know better. Thank you.” The sarcasm was back.
“If I intended to test you, I would have chosen something that I did not want.” He rolled his eyes, finally bored of the posturing. It, apparently, was not going to get either of them anywhere. He was fairly sure that Antonin did not think him capable, which, to Lucius’ mind, just went to show how little the other man knew.
“There is more than one way to skin a cat, Dolohov. And I would have thought you of all people would have understood the benefit of reliable intel on what the enemy is plotting, and influence in all of the right places. But apparently not. The Ministry might be largely inept as it is, but it is not without power.” He tilted his head to the side slightly. smiling in return. “Wonderful. Then I am glad that I bothered to mention it.”
The slight hint of disappointment in his voice made her feel guilty, it hadn’t been her intention to make him feel bad. “You don’t have to do that. I mean, there would be nothing wrong with going away somewhere… If you wanted to, that is.”
“Well, whoever these people are, you keep them close by.” Narcissa grinned, “This is a perfect gift, thank you so much. And I don’t know yet. I still can’t quite believe that you managed to get tickets.”
He shrugged, the momentary lightness gone. He wasn’t about to force her into a vacation, or even a day trip. “Perhaps.”
“You can trust me when I say that I intend to. I had heard that they were impossible to find, and it is always good to know people who can accomplish the impossible. You have no idea at all? No one comes immediately to mind?”
“Businessman under sufferance doesn’t mean I’m not good at what I do.” He wrote down the title on a piece of paper and tapped his arm. His raven landed on his arm and Antonin placed the paper in his beak before opening the door, letting the raven fly off. “I ask for a fair price. No it doesn’t good thing I don’t.” The Dolohov family was a big rich family in Russia but in London they weren’t as big especially now that he was the only one here after his parents died. He inherited his families wealth. Antonin was just keeping it safe and quiet. He wasn’t as wealthy as the Malfoys and part of him was glad. There must be so much pressure on them.
“No I’m not but none of them have the guts I do.” Antonin chuckled. Sometimes it involved stealing if the book was particularly rare. He had eyes and ears everywhere.
“Well I suppose that remains to be seen. But I would not have asked had I thought you were incapable.” He shrugged. Antonin could say whatever he liked about his own capabilities, but it did not mean that Lucius had to take him at his word. A somewhat contradictory position for the young man who expected everyone to simply understand just how many strengths he had.
“Do try to refrain from doing anything too illegal. I would prefer not to have the Ministry knocking down my door and asking questions about why I am in possession of a stolen book - and why I wanted that one in particular. But if you must go beyond the bounds of the law, do be discreet about it.”
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to sound so shocked, it was just a little unexpected.” Narcissa clarified with a somewhat apologetic smile. Her reaction could have been interpreted a lot worse than it appeared to be, but she wanted to make sure that he knew that she wasn’t offended by the idea. “I am sure that your gift will be more than enough, so there’s no need to even consider taking me anywhere.”
Accepting the envelope from him, she inspected it carefully for a moment, looking at it this way and that, before opening it up to reveal the tickets, a combination of both surprise and joy crossing her features.
“How did you - these can’t be found anywhere…”
“Right, well. I suppose I shall cross that off the list of things to do.” He was a little crestfallen, honestly, when she said he did not have to consider taking her anywhere. Joke that it might have been, he hadn’t thought it was an awful idea.
But the smile was back on his face when he saw that she seemed to be pleased with his actual gift. He shrugged casually, as though the acquisition of the tickets had not been a rather lengthy ordeal starting several months earlier.
“I know someone who knows someone, who knows someone. Do you know who you might take?”

If he did become an assassin he’d be the best. No one would be able to catch him. A mischievous smirk spread across his lips for a moment. How fun it would be to watch people get so confused and not being able to stop Antonin from dropping bodies.
He was not particularly happy with the tone in Lucius’ voice. He should be careful, and the kid should respect his superiors. Antonin remained patient and calm, coal black eyes locked on the other. “Unwise to doubt my abilities, Lucius. I can find your book, easily. It won’t be cheap because like you say it is a rather rare book but with your family I’m sure you can and will swing whatever price I ask.”
“Forgive me. I thought it best not to put blind faith in a man who has proclaimed himself a businessman under sufferance only, and who runs a store only as a front. “ Lucius smiled at the older man, polite, but not prepared to be pushed around by him. “While money might not be much of a concern for me, Dolohov, I will not pay more than a fair price. I cannot imagine that wealth lasts overly long when it is splashed about willy nilly,” though the Malfoys had a bigger fortune than any one person could likely spend in a lifetime.
“And besides. You are hardly the only rare book dealer about.” Antonin was certainly the most convenient option, and Lucius knew that he would not have to explain his reason for wanting the book. But then Abraxas had ties throughout the seedy underbelly of wizarding society, something he exploited in his apothecary business. If Antonin was not prepared to be reasonable, then Lucius was prepared to walk away.
“I have. Been going back and forth on it but I doubt it would be wise considering my position. The shop is a cover.” He shrugged. Killing for money was always enticing though just fighting for fun was even better. Antonin was the eyes and ears of the order in the sky. As an animagus raven Antonin could get in anywhere without anyone noticing.
“Sucks to be a student doesn’t it.” He chuckled. Antonin watched the explosion, the fire mirroring in his black eyes. “Well you want to fit in and blend in so you need to play the part. Indeed it has failed but we will make the wizarding world a better place again. Produce? Which book?”
“Magick Moste Evile.” He did not particularly enjoy the way Antonin seemed to talk down to him. The Malfoy library might have been extensive, but it was not entirely complete. Every now and then there were gaps, and this was one of them. Besides, considering his new line of work, Lucius figured he could not have too many, and at least for the near future, he had ample time to read more widely about his interests. “I assume it should not be overly difficult for you to track down a copy of the tome, and with discretion? It is uncommon, but not exceptionally rare - or so I am told.”
“If I am being honest, I am only here for my sister. Andromeda was here, so I mostly wanted to make sure she was okay.” She admitted with a slight shrug, part of her did care about those that had been caught up in it all, but mostly she was just concerned for Andromeda.
“Pardon?” She asked, a look of confusion crossing her features. She had heard what he had said, but was thrown by it.
“Well that was half a joke.” His smile faltered around the edges, but remained in place. He wasn’t sure whether she was horrified by the idea of going away with him, or whether she was just surprised by the suggestion. It was, after all, probably unexpected. “Unless you did want to go away, in which case I am sure something can be arranged. But I am afraid your actual gift is not nearly so exciting.”
He held out an envelope for her. Within were two tickets (in a private booth) to a ballet that was opening in January, and was already completely sold out.
Bellatrix turned her attention toward Lucius at his questions, shrugging slightly. “Yes you always did enjoy those. I’m enjoying myself just fine but for the evening I am enjoying the freedom of not having a date. And you? Are you here with anyone, Lucius?”
Bella smirked slightly as she had seen his eyes flicker to her leg, she loved the fact that being a woman gave her that power over men.
“It seems we have that in common. I did not think it was right to ask anyone - it might have set up unrealistic expectations for the festive period.” And more importantly, Valentine’s Day which came shortly after, amongst other reasons why he had not invited anyone. “Go on, then. Who’s your eye on? You might as well make the most of your freedom to have your pick of the pack.”
Diagon Alley | Christmas Eve
“Yes, I understand that things have been a bit crazy with Hogwarts and that it is Christmas tomorrow - that is precisely why I need this done so urgently. And if you cannot get it for me, no matter the price, then find me someone who can.” The lady behind the counter quickly withdrew as Lucius sighed and rapped his knuckles on the wood. Why was it so hard to find good help these days?

The Carrow Christmas gala was one of the it events of the season. Her mother was well known for throwing one of the most fabulous Christmas parties wizarding London has ever seen, year after year the party only became more extravagant. From the tiniest snowflake, to the twelve-foot Christmas tree in the middle of the foyer everything was perfect. The drinks were refilled before they ever had a chance to run dry, the food was spread out in such away that you never had to go far for a quick snack, and the music was always at just the right volume so that a conversation could be carried, but the dance floor was always full. The entire thing made Alecto sick. Christmas was her favorite holiday, she should have been enjoying herself. When she was a child she had marveled at the decorations that her mother picked out every year, she would gaze at the Christmas tree for hours at a time until finally Amycus would drag her away. Some of her best memories involved snow ball fights on Christmas day with her brother. She still loved Christmas, but she hated that it meant she had to come home to her parents. She could only hope that tonight’s party might give her some sort of reprieve. Alecto stood out on the balcony, watching as the snow fell, She was thankful for the warming charms that had been placed on the balcony as it allowed her to forgo a coat, and yet it was just chilly enough that she could almost forget about the party going on just a few feet away and pretend that she was out in the snow. “Such a lovely night.”

Lucius had been doing what Lucius did best: mingling his way through the crowd, rubbing shoulders with those who were important enough to warrant his attention, and dancing with those who caught his fancy. This was his playground, the arena in which he thrived, and his recent acceptance into the Death Eaters had only bolstered his already brimming sense of confidence.
He was talking to an elderly gentleman when he spied Alecto leaving the ballroom, and quickly excused himself. Although the party gave the air of perfection, Lucius suspected, based on the twins’ usual reaction to returning to school, that their home life was not as idyllic as it seemed at the ball.
He stepped out onto the balcony, but wasn’t sure whether Alecto’s comment was directed to him, or simply a musing to herself.
He approached, and stopped beside her, brushing a hand lightly over her lower back to let her know she was no longer alone.
“It is. Though not a very warm one. Are you cold?” If she was, he knew the right thing to do would be to offer his jacket.
Would you rather marry a rich muggleborn and double your combined fortunes, or marry a poor Pureblood and have no money?
“Marry the rich muggleborn. Birth records, and family histories, can be changed - suitable ancestors can be found.”
Historically, the Malfoys have had ties to muggle nobility. Their bigoted pureblood stance is as much one of convenience and keeping up with what is most likely to benefit them in the current political climate. But if society were to change permanently, you would likely see a shift in attitude from the Malfoys as well. They are quite Machiavellian.
“I don’t know. Maybe taking my dualing skills on the road. When I left Hogwarts I had already been recruited for a few years.” He shrugged. “I don’t plan on retiring.” He said simply. Antonin figured he would die in combat one day or continue fighting for their mission. The war couldn’t last forever but someone would always try to rebel.
“Just asking. It’s my job as a salesman.” He raised his eyebrow. “We did do pretty damn good work. People who stay at the crime scene when they did it are just asking to be caught.”
“Have you ever considered turning somewhat legitimate and becoming a Hit Wiazard? The Ministry is seeking recruits, after all.” And the Death Eaters could always do with more eyes and ears inside the Ministry. It was, after all, one of the reasons Lucius was intending to take up a position in government.
“Personally, I had no intention of remaining behind to experience the handiwork.” It had, after all, been an explosion. “Though it would have saved my having to waste time cleaning up in the aftermath. The fact that prefects were required to do so much really just shows what a failed institution it was. But, anyway. That is not the point. I need you to procure a book for me.”
“And yet here I am, doing the job of what should be a Ministry official…” There was a bitterness to her tone, one that she really couldn’t keep back. Sighing, she turned her head to glance up at Lucius apologetically.
“I’m sorry, the selfish part of me cannot help but be annoyed that this has happened on today of all days..”
“I believe that is a perfectly natural reaction. I think it is rather incredible that you bothered to show up at all. I would imagine that most people in the same situation would have refused. Come on - let’s get out of here. We can go anywhere you like. Paris, Milan - New York. Anywhere you fancy.”
