Character description
For as long as he can remember, Flik didn’t feel like he belonged anywhere in Animania. He wasn’t sure if being adopted was part of that feeling, but that didn’t mean he didn’t love his adopted family. He had a good childhood, one that most would have no complaints about, but there was still something missing. He used his knack for inventing as a way to deal with feeling like an outsider, thinking of all types of things that could possibly help make things easier for himself and his family! Too bad most of the things he came up with sucked, but that wasn’t going to stop him. He’s convinced that one day, his hard work will pay off. He uses his mistakes as lessons to be learned, and hopes to come out from all of it stronger. While he does have a hardworking, optimistic attitude, that doesn’t mean things don’t get him down here and there. It was awful when he got fired by his best friend, his crush, from a job that he enjoyed doing. It had felt like he hit rock bottom and that things would never look up. Once he met new friends and got a new job with a sense of belonging, though, he realized that all things must happen for a reason. Things are sort of looking up for Flik, but he still has a long way to go. He wishes he could do more for Atta and her family, often staying up late in the night coming up with ideas that may just help them out.
Headcanons
- Flik majored in mechanical engineering in college. While he didn’t make too many friends in college, it still was the start to him feeling a sense of belonging. His love for inventing made school enjoyable and helped him get more comfortable with his skills.
- He always wanted to do something that would help people, which was why he enjoyed working for the Dreyfus business. He knew how big the company was to Animania, and even as just a packer, he felt like he was put there to make a difference. It was why he tried so hard to invent things to make the job better and more efficient.
- He never meant to cause problems for Atta, but he also doesn’t regret trying to stand up to Hopper. He hates how much power the guy has, but he doesn’t think that means Hopper automatically wins. He isn’t giving up that easily. Still, he knows he screwed up with his last invention, so he doesn’t blame Atta for firing him. That didn’t make it hurt any less, though.
- Finding P.T. Flea’s Circus changed a lot for Flik. For once, he didn’t feel like an outsider — it didn’t take him long at all to get comfortable with everyone there, and he enjoys the job despite that it wasn’t really what he had been aiming for. The circus doesn’t exactly make a difference to Animania like the Dreyfus business does, but that was okay for now. He hasn’t fully given up on the company or Atta yet, and he can still invent outside of work and make differences elsewhere. Besides, he really thinks his new friends could help him out with his plans, but he just has to make sure his plan is flawless first. He can’t screw up again.
- He misses Atta a lot. They’ve been friends since childhood and he grew even closer to her when working for the Dreyfus’s. The distance that’s grown between them has been tough on him, but he’s glad he’s found somewhere for him that still brings a sense of belonging.
- He also has a soft spot for Dot, which was why he had to stand up to Hopper in the first place. He couldn’t stand back and watch as Hopper threatened them, and Flik was the first one to ever speak up about Hopper’s mistreatment. In a way, that was the beginning of the planned uprising. He’s not on the inside of the business anymore now that he was fired, but he still stands by them and wants to help in any way possible.
