May waited a moment, looking up towards the letter box expectantly. When he responded to ask why there was a cat in her apartment, her heart sank. He couldn’t understand her. She had to think of something to show him that everything was okay, without drawing attention to the fact she may have turned herself into a cat with magic. But, how?
She just hoped her magic still worked like this. Rushing back into the main room, she had an idea. When she had tried to text James back earlier, her claws had meant she couldn’t use the touchscreen on her phone. But, if she used her magic to make something else tap the screen, she could respond.
Jumping back up on to the kitchen chair, her feline eyes scanned the room until she found a pencil with an eraser on the end. That would do!
Closing her eyes, she focused: “Pencil on the kitchen counter, rise up to hover in front of me.” To May’s immediate relief, the pencil did what she had instructed it to do, hovering a few inches from her face.
“Pencil, flip over to the eraser side and follow my eyes.” she added. The pencil did just as instructed, cartwheeling in midair. May’s eyes trained to the phone, turning on the screen and swiping up to type in her password. She double tapped the notification from James and began typing a message:
[TEXT: James💖🥰 ] Hey! Sorry for not texting you back, it’s a bit of a long story. I’m kinda looking after a friend’s cat at the moment.😖
As moments ticked by, the hero was starting to get antsy. He had kept her out of the superhero life, so no one should know about her if any thugs wanted something to use against him. But it wasn’t like May to respond with dead silence for so long. He hadn’t been too distant, had he? Was she angry at him? He wanted to knock the door again, and maybe knock it down, but he knew better. Instead, he pulled his hood up with one hand and tightly gripped the material as he began to pace.
Then... A text. Thank goodness.
[Text: May ❤️] oh. bit odd, but thats grand.
[Text: May ❤️] i was at yours but ill go on home if you’re out. your friends cat sounds a bit antsy.
... He should be relieved she’s okay, but he can’t shake that overwhelming gut feeling that he doesn’t know everything.
