“Oh, it’s just memorising stuff, I just suck at stuff like this” Lucy huffed, returning to her own side of the desk. She waited to see if Mia picked up on her hint, but when she failed, Lucy asked “say, don’t supposed you could give me a hand with that good old Torres Method? I hear it’s legendary…”

“Do you think you’ll pick Grey Sloan to do your residency?” Lucy continued, foregoing the studying to stuff the banana in her mouth. “I’m weighing up the pros and cons, which currently seems a little useless seeing as I’m not going to even get through year one, let alone graduate,” she said between chews, words slightly muffled behind banana and her hands, preserving a tiny scrap of her manners. She was exaggerating about her school life, but as those around her were used to, she loved to complain.

She laughed lightly when the girl said that memorising was her problem, Mia didn’t have that problem, she just had to read it. When Lucy asked for the Torres Method she shook her head slightly, “I’d love to Luce but I’m sworn to secrecy, you’ll have to get it from the original Torres,” she said. It had taken a while for even Mia to convince Callie that she deserved the secret. “Plus, she wouldn’t even give it to me until third year,” she answered, “I can help you with some memory tricks though.”

Mia nodded in response to the question, “I think so, I’ve spent my whole life here it’d be so weird to go somewhere else,” she explained. “Plus, I’m figuring that mom’s will retire soon so the whole family thing won’t be too much of a problem, not that I’m planning on choosing fetal or ortho anyway.” She’d been unsure of her choice originally but now she knew that if she got into Grey Sloan, that’s where she’d be heading. “You’ll graduate for sure, planning on sticking around Seattle?”

"Mia, you have a camera for a brain. You don't NEED the method like I do!" Lucy moaned, but smiled when Mia mentioned memory tricks. "Definitely will take you up on that offer soon!"

"That's true, by the time I finish I bet my parents will be retired - unless they pull a Dr Webber and keeping going until they're basically blind and shaking!" She joked, laughing. "What do you think you might go for then, if you're not copying your moms? I thought I would be like my dad and pick peds, kids are so much easier to cheer up that grown ups. I do think I'd enjoy trauma but I'm scared I might cry too much," Lucy admitted a little sheepishly.

“I mean… I may not yet but someday that board seat is mine.” Bailey grinned. “Here, I’ve got that.” He extended his arm to take Lucy’s bookbag that seemed to be quite heavy. One of the nice things about graduating from med school to residency was that he no longer had one of his own to carry.

As they walked Bailey pulled out his phone and looked up the first place they were going. “They both have two bedrooms for sure. I’m not sure about bathrooms - I know one has two and the other has one. Although for the record - I’m not a total slob.” Bailey laughed.

“I didn’t think nepotism was Dr Grey’s thing.” She said sarcastically, with a (faked) unamused deadpan. But she smiled thankfully and let him take her bag seeing as he had nothing else to carry. “But I suppose there would be worse people to take that seat, I swear some of the interns running around here get lost every damn day. They’d be useless as a board member, you’d think they’d never learnt to read.” Despite only being a med student, on numerous occasions Lucy had saved the bacon of several new interns, escorting them to the correct ORs, or making sure their patients were in the right rooms. It made her thankful that she’d followed her dad around enough times to know a good footprint of the hospital.

“You may not be a total slob, but you are a boy,” Lucy said, trying hard not to join in the laugh. “And they are notoriously bad when it comes to bathrooms. So if the two bathroom apartment is a total hole, then you’re really going to have to prove yourself and try to impress me!”

Bailey’s ego was a bit much, even he had to admit that. He had spent so long faking confidence that eventually it became real. While every now and then he had his doubts about his life he reminded himself that he was of strong blood and kept on moving. While Bailey knew that Lucy had never been the biggest fan of his relationship with Alex the man was the most important man in his life growing up and he’d never actually intentionally do anything to upset him.

“I really don’t think he’d mind.” Bailey honestly reassured Lucy. “If he does say anything just shoot him a ‘like father like daughter’ and he’ll have no room to talk. Hell, I can probably give you a million different responses ranging from perfect innocent princess to fuck off.”

“Sure, okay, but you have the evidence of turning up drunk at 16 to his front door and him keeping that a secret, I, however, have no proof that he wouldn’t care that his child has broken the rules.” She laughed, “So I guess as long as you make it clear it was all your fault, we’ll be good!” “Do you really think I could swear at my dad and not stutter?” Lucy gasped, half exaggeratedly, half seriously. “You, sure, I could think of a million reasons to tell you to fuck off, but I don’t think my dad has ever heard me mutter even a single cuss word.”

“Whatever you say Karev.” Bailey smirked. “And it’s a done deal. I’ll see you later.”

“Lucy!” Bailey called out dramatically as he descended the last flight of stairs into the hospital lobby. “Let’s go! We have apartments to view and leases to sign!” He practically skipped up to his childhood friend with a goofy sleep-deprived grin on his face and a fresh cup of coffee in his hand. “You’re good to walk right? I promise it’s not far. The first is maybe a block and a half at most and then the other one’s only another two from there. My thoughts were the closer I live to the hospital the longer I can sleep in the morning.”

Lucy smiled as she looked up from her phone, amused at Bailey’s entrance. 

“You really do think you own this place, don’t you?” She teased, nudging him with her elbow and she picked up her book-heavy rucksack. “Walking is fine, to be honest I could do with the exercise, I never seem to have time to do any since starting school here.” They set off, Seattle, though thankfully not raining (yet), was quite overcast, but otherwise fair enough to make Lucy think the umbrella could be left.

“So how many beds are these apartments? Just the two?” she enquired, “and please tell me I don’t have to share a bathroom with you.”

Bailey rolled his eyes. “If I ever do go to prison they’ll let me out when they realize how valuable I am to society. Not that I couldn’t talk myself out of it in court. Because I definitely could.”

“Don’t worry, Princess.” Bailey teased his childhood friend. “You may be a daddy’s girl but I can keep that to myself. I’m great with secrets. And let’s be honest with ourselves - your dad’s pretty much the coolest.”

“Sure, okay Bailey,” sarcasm dripped from Lucy’s voice, but she was tired of arguing, knowing that he’d never give in. “Your ego is so big it’s not like anyone could get near enough to arrest you anyway!”

She smiled at his compliments of her father. Even when they all left for college, her dad kept in almost daily contact with Bailey. She witnessed the boys’ relationship growing up, and her dad was probably the reason Lucy could see through Bailey’s occasionally extremely douchebag-like behaviour.

“Well it is true, my dad is pretty great, except when he’s mad that his daughter and his intern are bunking off their duties to steal coffee. He’s going to be especially mad at you when he finds out you’re the reason his little girl has turned to a life of crime.” She joked, taking a sip from her (admittedly delightful) coffee.

Mia looked up when she heard the noise of books hitting the desk and she saw Lucy struggling with a mountain of books. She let out a laugh as Lucy asked for her help, “honestly, the trick is a photographic memory, no social life and The Torres Method,” Mia answered. She knew she was incredibly lucky to be born to two doctors, any questions she had could be answered in a heartbeat. Of course Lucy also had two docotor parents but neither of her parents were Callie Torres, owner of the Torres method. However she’d been sworn to secrecy, Callie picked out who got to use it and it was intense, but it certainly worked. 

She laughed as Lucy commented on what she was looking at, “I mean a fetish for broken humans sounds like a perfect description for a doctor,” she joked. “Just unsolved cases, think they’re a little too difficult for a med student though,” she admitted, pushing the laptop lid shut. “So what’re you studying?” she asked, wondering if maybe she could help the girl out. Mia’s memory was a life saver, she could depend on it whenever she needed to recall things, anything. It was the one good thing her bio parents had given her, well that and her hair, she really loved her hair.

“I make no promises not to bring home a different girl every week but I do promise to try and keep it in the bedroom.” Bailey grinned. To be honest, with his new intern schedule he didn’t expect to bring many dates home at all - but he had dealt with a few awkward situations at his mother’s house and wasn’t excited about repeating them. “Seriously though - you know I wouldn’t do that to you. Not intentionally anyways.”

“You need to stop talking otherwise I can’t live with you,” Lucy said, resolutely staring at the wall when he started to talk about his sex life. “I’ll take your word for it but I get a free month of rent if I see anything belonging to you or the poor girl-of-the-week, that I don’t wanna see.”

“I’m going to turn around and leave, and meet you in the main lobby later. Text me when you’re done with your shift!” She turned on her heel, and waved goodbye without turning back again.

Bailey leaned against the wall and laughed before taking a sip of his coffee. “Oh but this tastes so much better. We earned it.” Bailey clarified. Lucy’s shock made the coffee even better than it already was. “You’re still so innocent Luce. It’s all about confidence. Now I know that’s something you have somewhere inside of you and we’ll just work on finding it until you’re ready.”

Bailey took another sip and began walking again. “Repeat after me - ‘I’m looking for Dr. Karev.’ It’s that easy. And if I’m being totally honest, albeit a bit presumptive, I don’t think your dad would be too upset if he found out you were name dropping to get some coffee. Especially if it saves him… how much do you spend on coffee each week?” Bailey chuckled and took a step back towards Lucy.

“You say innocent like it’s a bad thing, but innocent people don’t go to prison,” Lucy’s (recently returned) lighthearted attitude swiftly disappeared at the question of cost.

“I... suppose, it’s a marginally above average amount that med students spend on coffee,” Lucy shamefully admitted, “but I pay for most of it, so I don’t want you going around telling everyone that I’m a daddy’s girl, because that’s not true...” she paused, reconsidering her statement, “generally.”

“Perfect! It’ll be great!” Bailey’s jaw dropped when Lucy mentioned the picture he was all too familiar with. “Where the hell did you get that? And what do you mean everyone?” Shake it off, Bailey told himself. “Not that it matters. What does matter is that while pink boas are nice - they’re not what you want on your couch when you bring home that girl from the bar.”

“Okay B,” Lucy relented, keeping the sarcasm, but deciding she should wait until she’s safely out of her parents house before continuing to torment him. “No pink feather boas, on the condition that I don’t walk into a situation similar to what I want to walk out of. Nothing beats the pain of seeing your parents, but I don’t need your naked butt in my visual memory either.”

“You? Trouble?” Bailey laughed. “I’d love to see that.”

He grinned and led Lucy inside and down the stairs. “You know I’ll always take the blame for you. But yes, I do like to think I’ve grown up some. I’m still just as mischievous - I’m just smarter about it.” As they approached the attending’s lounge Bailey looked around to make sure that no one else was in the hall. “Watch and learn.” he told Lucy.

Bailey opened the door to the lounge and when he saw that there was a pair of attendings sitting there he smiled at them. “You haven’t seen my mother - have you?” he asked casually, as he approached the coffee machine. “Dr. Grey? If you see her tell her that her son has her coffee and is looking for her? Thanks.”

Bailey smirked at Lucy and left the lounge with two cups of coffee in hand, feeling quite proud of himself. “It’s all about the attitude.” Bailey told Lucy as he handed her a coffee. “If you act like you’re supposed to be there no one will question it. Next time it’ll be your turn to try.”

Her stomach sank when she saw the attendings. Now she was going to be kicked out of school, Bailey would lose his job, he could always find work as a nurse, or as a healthcare business consultant, she would have to start college again, but there’s no way she could afford that, so it would be McDonald’s or-

Hands shaking and completely dumbfounded, she took the coffee from him. “How in the hell did you pull that off?”

She nearly spat out her first sip at his suggestion of repeating their crime.

“No. I can’t, never again, I’m going to start keeping a piggy bank here for coffee. What if I mess it up?! I cannot do what you just did,” she paused, replaying the moment in her head, “I’m not even sure how you did it!”

Bailey bit his lip to hold back another laugh. “The kitchen? I mean you have to… Never mind.” Bailey stopped his comment on Lucy’s behalf. He knew that if it were his own mother he’d have very different opinions about the situation.

“Awesome!” Bailey exclaimed. “I get off my shift this afternoon actually if you want to stick around. The first one’s only a couple blocks down the street.” Bailey laughed and nodded. “An apartment full of girls - yes - always. A living room full of their stuff? Not so much.”

“I will definitely meet you for that!” 

Lucy raised an unimpressed brow at his protests “Bailey, everyone has a copy somewhere of the picture of Zola dressing you up like a princess, and you looked like you were thoroughly enjoying it, so come clean,” she held his arm lightly in mock comfort, laughing, “there’s nothing wrong with enjoying a bright pink feather boa or two!”

“C’mon Luce.” Bailey laughed. He gave her back her hand long enough to put his top back on and then walked back over to her. “You may not work here but you were raised here. You’re the daughter of two department heads which means you really can’t get into too much trouble.”

Bailey gently rested his hands on Lucy’s shoulders and smiled. “Coffee is always a necessity. And we won’t get caught - have I ever given you a reason not to trust me?”

“The fact that I’m a daughter of two department heads means that I can get into too much trouble, at school and at home.”

Lucy squinted her eyes at him. “Ever? Most definitely. But... I guess you could’ve grown up a bit.” She bit her lip and considered her options. She did really need that coffee, “Okay, but if we get caught you have to take all the blame, Mr Untouchable.”

Bailey laughed and wrapped his arms around Lucy before setting her back down on the ground. “So you’re in?” he teased. “But yeah - I actually am still looking. Kind of. I’ve talked to some landlords and gotten quotes. I just haven’t signed any papers yet. But you’re more than welcome to come check them out with me if you want. My only request is that it’s just as much not a chick’s place as it is not a ‘bro-home..’”

“Hell yeah I’m in, I don’t want to come down for a late night snack to find... them... in the kitchen.” She shuddered at the thought.  “Well, I’ll head over with you to see them.”

Lucy grinned when Bailey stated his “only request”, “Oh, please B, you know you’d love it!”
