My finished AI project explaned
Glitching - Experiment: Hex Editor
In my previous experiments I relied on web based systems to create the glitch effect, some done by complete random generation but others with sliders to control the output image. I decided to take the harder route and experience what it was like to create these glitched images on my own by using the traditional use of editors. These editors (HEX) aka hexadecimal editors edits the raw data behind the image most commonly .JPEG formats. “A hex editor (or binary file editor or byte editor) is a type of computer program that allows for manipulation of the fundamental binary data that constitutes a computer file. The name 'hex' comes from 'hexadecimal': a standard numerical format for representing binary data. A typical computer file occupies multiple areas on the platter(s) of a disk drive, whose contents are combined to form the file. Hex editors that are designed to parse and edit sector data from the physical segments of floppy or hard disks are sometimes called sector editors or disk editors.”
In my experiments I did just that, I dragged one of my facebook DP images into the hex editor and began to copy paste, write random things (”ORANGE STARBURSTS ARE MY FAV”) into the image file and see what results I achieved. I found that by repeating certain lines of data the image would split, other areas would change the hue/colour of the image whilst other areas caused complete blackouts..
The results turned out better than I have imagined, creating an ordinary display photo into an independent work of art. As I began to work with the file, I found out patterns within the files and where to touch/not touch in order to avoid faults/corruption. This made life much easier for later photos as I could semi guess what glitch would create such effects. This was extremely interesting to me and decided to use this technique for my final project. It was experimenting with this image where my main concept was formed. As I dove deeper into what I found glitching to be, I found that the true meaning for me was that a glitch was a form of change that expands on not knowing the unpredictable outcomes. This glitch/art of not knowing the result can be seen through our daily lives. Our decisions, experiences, directions and actions are glitches within our own lives, creating a later unexpected output that can either be beautiful or catastrophic.
Below was an image (taken on my recent holiday) that was done in a COFA class day with people around me to see the procedure, they were amazed at all the randomness and artistic results that can come out from this process.
Now, I’ve finished this project!
I’ve added the zooming feature and the coloring feature. I know there’s a lot to be improved, but it’s more than enough for my uses :) On to the next!!
Progreeesssss
My progress on a hex-grid editor in Unity. You can move and highlight the hexes now! Whee!
