also one of my favorite possession things is when whatever possession force is not capable of being contained safely within a mortal body and its vessel starts deteriorating or breaking down as a result. when blood vessels burst in their eyes or their nose starts bleeding or rotten spots bloom across their skin or any other signs of stress eating away at their vessel show up it's like OOH YAY

bonus points if the possessing force is completely unfazed by their deteriorating vessel and doesn't even acknowledge it (whether or not the damage is affecting their ability to operate the body). also bonus points also if they use it to purposefully intimidate or scare the vessel's loved ones. well also bonus points if the possessing force is displeased by the deterioration and dislike the side effects because it makes them unable to inhabit a vessel for long periods of time. bonus points for all of it. it's all great. 5 stars

Thinking about Erased again and finding a new appreciation for the way the anime adaptation chose to focus much more on the circumstances that led to the murder victims being vulnerable than on identifying and directly confronting the murderer. The murder mystery aspect is definitely still undercooked, don't get me wrong, but I'm realizing now just how rare it is for a crime thriller to center the targets/victims over the perpetrator and to specifically call attention to the social forces that needed to be addressed in order to keep them from becoming victims in the first place.

Erased is especially remarkable in how it does this because the majority of the characters working to thwart the marginalization that leaves people in their community vulnerable to abuse, murder, and false imprisonment are marginalized themselves, specifically several children and one single mother. Yes, one of those children is actually a time traveling adult in his childhood body, but aside from do-overs, foresight, and adult reasoning skills, he doesn't have any more tools at his disposal to save lives than any of the other kids he enlists to help in this mission.

His mom is a huge asset in the sense that she's able to do adult things like open up their home as a safe haven, coordinate with other adults who might not be so open to listening to kids, and generally throw her protective and legal weight around when necessary, but she still doesn't do anything that an ordinary adult couldn't.

So Erased not only prioritizes looking after the vulnerable rather than trying to be a badass crime fighter, it also says that this is something ordinary people with very few resources can do through teamwork and determination.
