With ease, Ethan threw back his shot, allowing it’s contents to burn feverishly down his esophagus and into the depths of abdomen. Despite his already knackered state, the clear liquid only increased his hunger for more and the longing to forget. Alfie’s death. Vegas’s attack. Julian’s hospital room. That heartbreaking look on Charlotte’s face. He turned to face Lily and her spotless glass. Perhaps he wasn’t the only one yearning for a distraction…
“Impressive.” the chaser quipped before cocking his head to the side at the mention of whiskey. Ethan’s naturally smug expression began to return to him as the next round was being prepared. “But I reckon even if you’re right about the whiskey, we can still do a hell of a lot better. What do you say we make this interesting?”
With devilish grin, he peered over towards Lily then back towards the bartender beckoning for another two shots each. His tone was confident, not condescending, and he waited eagerly for the rest of the shots to join them. “First to down them all wins. Loser buys next, yeah?”Â
As the next round of drinks was poured, Lily kept the corner of her eye trained on Ethan. Was this really the best thing for either of them at the moment? She may not have been the most emotionally attuned person in the world, as her mother was always quick to remind her by a roll of her eyes, but she could see when someone was hurting. Experience makes a person see things like that easier. Yet she couldn’t ignore the slightly numbing effect the alcohol had on her system and her mind. Thoughts of her father, of training, and of the state of her world could wait a little while longer.
“You say that like you actually had a little doubt in me,” Lily shot back with a grin. There it was, an expression that was slowly drifting away from the introspective pain he had been wearing a few moments ago. It suited him much better. Hearing his proposition, Lily rested her arms on the bar, curious. “Alright, give me your best shot, Wood. That’ll make it all the sweeter when you lose.”
The row of shots was lined up in front of them, and Lily shot a wink to the bartender as he did so, earning a chuckle in return. It paid off to make friends in alcohol-bearing places. “You’ve got yourself a deal,” Lily stuck out her hand to shake, a confident glint in her eye. He had no idea who he was up against, and she thrived on it. Maybe she’d have some real competition for once. “Ready... set... go.”
