Kaoru Hanayama Head Canons - Physical and Material: What draws Kaoru Hanayama In
There's an instance where I use the anatomical word for certain body parts, please be aware of that.
In my last post, I discussed emotional and situational qualities that I thought would be required to get someone like Kaoru Hanayama to seriously consider becoming someone's romantic partner.

While that's good and all, I think it's equally important to look the part. Now theoretically speaking, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and "love can take many shapes" and we really shouldn't be holding people to general beauty standards. Alas, psychology has taught us that our brains can and do find certain traits more physically attractive than others before we, the consciousness, can actually consider it. Additionally in the realm of "physical" things, certain outfits will 100% have an impact on how someone perceives you. Kaoru Hanayama, stoic as he is, is not immune to this. So let's take a look at what I think might draw him in, physically.
Physical traits that don't bother/concern him -
There are a few things that I honestly feel wouldn't make an ounce of a difference for him on whether or not he finds them attractive physically. Not because they're not important, but rather they're just so unimaginably minor that they probably barely register to him. These things are more like, little tidbits that he notices and may even begin to associate with them if he likes them enough. But they'll never be things that draw him in or push him away - It's just a part of who they are.
Hair Color, hair length, eye color, facial blemishes, nails, skin tone, breast/penis size
While I'm certain that there are other facets to physical beauty that could be mentioned here, these are pretty significant.
If you're active in todays dating pool or have friends/family in the dating pool, you may have heard them mention things about their "ideal" partner:
Their man must have at least 9 inches and have a 6 pack
A woman must wear at least a DD and have clear skin.
Kaoru, on the other hand, would be quite practical ; The color or length of their hair has little to do with whether or not he finds them physically attractive, it's hair. It can grow back, be cut, colored, styled, or bought if they so please.
If anything, I feel that he might pay attention to someone's nails to understand them better as a person. The way a person keeps their nails can say a lot about them and what kind of work they might do -
- - - Dirty, short nails could suggest that their job has more to do with manual labor, or that perhaps their nails are too inconsequential to be bothered with.
- - - Clean, average length nails could suggest maybe a white collar job along with some care taken to keep them clean while not peeling them too short.
- - - Provided they keep their nails consistently manicured and styled would suggest that they've got enough money to be comfortable and their job may be more akin to a celebrity, influencer, or maybe even an escort. Some kind of position that would require that they keep their physical appearance looking sharp.
Physical traits that would absolutely catch his eye -
Having gone over the physical qualities that he probably wouldn't look twice at, we can review things that are more likely to catch his attention. Of course, if they make any one aspect more prominent than others, even if it's one he doesn't really care about, then he'll be more likely to notice. These things are qualities that I think someone like Kaoru Hanayama would be unconsciously drawn to, then consciously drawn to.
Waist Width/Hip Width, Overall Weight, Height, Scars/Tattoos/Birthmarks, Hand Texture
If you've watched the anime, then you've seen how large his hands are. If you've read the manga, the size of his hands have given you nightmares. This man has huge grippers and for that reason, I feel like he'd be naturally drawn to someone who's larger. This should, theoretically, translate to giving him a little more leeway with how rough or gentle he is with them.
Speaking on the hands, if their hands are softer than his, he'd absolutely melt at this. If for any reason, they've touched his bare skin, hands/arms/chest/cheek, with their bare hands, he's going to enjoy the texture difference I think. It'll be a welcome change of pace from his own, which may be kind of rough from literally fighting his enemies on sight.
Finally, their height being close to his own might be another welcome change, as a lot of the people he's used to dealing with are shorter than him. Having a smaller partner to use as a human teddy bear might be nice.... until he rolls over on top of them and then they're struggling.
How they dress to impress him -
As we've discussed, he needs to be able to see them for who they are, seeing that they're comfortable in their own skin. This can easily translate into fashion choices. Based on my own ideas, I've gone through and selected some pieces that I think he might enjoy seeing on his partner.
Also, these are some of the important points I tried to keep in mind when designing the list of clothing items -
Light colors = Easier to spot wounds that are bleeding = Nothing too dark, almost no black
Showing Skin = Confidence
Practical Designs = Mature and minimalistic, symbolic
Patterns > Logos/Whacky Designs
Masculine Items -
In case you're wondering why everything looks so professional, it's just because that's the way Kaoru has dressed almost every time we see him in the anime, so it made sense to base their styles on that.
