It doesn’t start with him being voted Captain. Not really.
Really, it started when he moved into the basement. When suddenly he was given space to forget all the freaking annoying things about Nursey (the clothes everywhere, the loud music all the time, the rotting food…) and realize that not everything about living with Nursey was bad. He actually kinda liked when Nursey would mutter to himself about old weird authors or poems and Nursey never seemed to care if his phone had any battery so he let Dex use his charger when he was feeling too lazy to dig around his bag for his own and, really, hearing the music through the headphones wasn’t too bad unless Dex was trying to sleep or work on a particularly hard code so…
The point is it’s only about three weeks after finishing the basement that Dex finds himself sort of drifting back up to the room to hang with Nursey. Mostly when Chowder is up there chilling anyway but then also when Chowder is out with Farmer and it’s just… it’s not so bad. Dex doesn’t care if the room is messy as long as it’s not his room and he can always walk away if the music gets too annoying and he does get the ultimate victory of finally seeing Nursey walk in, take a breath, and admit that something fucking stinks in there.
Also, the basement is drafty as hell, so he doesn’t mind too much when Nursey cranks the heat in the house up to an ungodly 73.
And then there’s hockey. Hell, being on a winning team makes everything a thousand times easier. And for all their issues, he and Nursey have always connected on the ice.
So, really, things ease up well before he is named captain. But there’s…
He never expected to be captain. Whiskey has Jack-level talent and Jack-level drive and Jack-level hockey knowledge and so a part of him just assumed that Whiskey would pull a Jack and be captain as a Junior. He hadn’t even really considered writing anyone else down. And didn’t think anyone would write him down. He… He was the guy who lost his temper too quickly and who studied too much and always turned an ungodly shade of red when he drank too much at parties and moved into the basement because he couldn’t get along with his own teammate. He was not captain material.
And, sure, he knows, objectively, that a lot of people had to vote for him for that to happen but for some reason when he hears the news, it’s Nursey who he turns to.
And Nursey was already pressed to his side and there was something in his reply, something natural and soft and so fucking easy about his “Dex, of course I voted for you” that had Dex feeling his ears go red.
