“Don’t go saying that before you’ve even seen what it is. Maybe you’ll be disappointed.”
He laughed a little then, too.
“Alright… now.”
When she opened her eyes she would be inside the courtyard, and though it was night it was brightly lit by what must have been hundreds of lanterns, looking as though stars had come down to the ground just for her. The two of them had plenty of things by now, there was no gift needing to be given. So instead he’d thought to offer her a beautiful little oasis, an escape from the frivolities of court life and a view into something a little more special.
“Oh, hardly, Alistair, you could never disappoint me.”
She opened her eyes on his command, drawing in a sharp breath. It was beautiful, as if a section of the night sky had drifted down into their courtyard, enveloping them in almost ethereal light. She pressed a hand to her mouth, tears pricking the corner of her eyes with the sheer magnificence of it all.
“Well,” she managed faintly, “I was right. You never disappoint.”
