Manuscript leaf from an antiphonal on vellum, originating from a large liturgical choir book of the Order of Saint Benedict; Spanish, late 16th century.
The leaf contains texts belonging to the Office of the Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary, identifiable by the red Latin rubric: “Officium de Septem Doloribus B.M.V. Ad Vesperas Antiphona.” It features Gothic libraria script in black ink with red rubrics. A highlight is a large, decorated capital 'D' containing an image of a heart pierced by seven swords—one of the most characteristic iconographic representations of the devotion to the Sorrows of Mary. On the other side, there is a large capital 'O' in red and blue, accompanied by numerous rubricated capital letters.
Antiphonals of this size were used for liturgical choral singing in churches and religious communities. Their large format allowed multiple singers to read from a shared lectern simultaneously.
Material: Vellum Period: 16th century Origin: Spain Dimensions: 70 × 50 cm
