Tsuna opens his eyes normally while his mind snaps awake, ripped away from sleep by the chill running down his spine. It bites down past his skin through his muscles deep into his bones, goosebumps all over his body.

He curls up on himself deeper in the blanket, wrapping it around him as tight as possible and holding onto it for dear life. It changes nothing, his body badly shaking, his teeth chattering.

He has no trouble holding onto the blanket despite how badly he shakes and had no trouble grabbing onto it either. He caught a glimpse of his hands as he curled up on himself, of his non-shaking hands, but that can’t be right. He’s shaking, he knows he is. He feels like he should be anyway.

He’s cold. Not a “taking a cold shower” type of cold because he knows what that feels like, and this feels much worse in a way he’s never felt before. Like—maybe he’d feel like that if he was dumped in a frozen lake in the middle of the coldest winter.

“I’m Chrome,” she decides to tell him. “I— I don’t know what happened, but I woke up like this. And Boss always said to come to him, so…”

For an agonizingly long time, Yamamoto stares blankly at her.

“Chrome?” he finally asks. “Who’s that?”

Who—? They may not be close, but they know each other. They’ve gone to events together, taken occasional missions together. He learned her diet when he was fifteen, always offered food catered to her even when customers lined his restaurant’s entrance. Why would he ask who she is?

“Chrome Dokuro,” she repeats. “Boss’s… Vongola’s Mist Guardian.”

Yamamoto’s smile sharpens into something confused and slightly dangerous.

“Tsuna doesn’t have a Mist Guardian.”

Boss had given Chrome a key once. He pressed it gently into her hand, the ridges barely denting her skin, and told her she was always welcome in his home.

That had been years ago, when she first moved to Namimori. Initially, she relied on Kyouko and Haru’s generosity. She told him she was fine with them. But after the Representative Battles, Boss had looped a copy of his house key on a chain and handed it to her anyway.

“Just in case,” he said. “I know you can stay with Kyouko and Haru, but you’ll always have a place here, too. You’re part of our team.”

Chrome lifted the chain apprehensively. The key dangled and spun like a whirlpool, dizzying and intimidating in all its implications. This was an open invitation, freely given, and one she wasn’t sure she should take.

The battlefield was different from the Sawadas’ own home. She knew her Flames were useful on the field. But by herself, in the comfort of Sawada Nana’s loving meals and the children’s excited playdates, would she still be welcome?

As if reading her thoughts, Boss smiled. “Mama loves you. She thinks of you as a daughter, and she wishes you'd visit more.”

And that— that had tipped her over the edge. She clutched the key tightly, memorizing its shape and cuts. She had Mukuro-sama, but she also had more: friends, a place to stay, and a boss who looked after her.

She conjures the spare key now. Cool metal settles in her hand and slots perfectly into the Sawadas’ front door, which creaks open noisily.

Heavy layers of dust coat the house. Chrome sneezes.

what if your cool rich popular uncle takes you away from your abusive father and you grow up with all of your needs fulfilled but at some point you realize people are treating you as an extension of your uncle no different from the cape he is wearing and your cool rich popular uncle starts getting upset that you are no longer a child that he needs to hide from the world anymore while simultaneously demanding for you to grow up

the empire your uncle built is in shambles and you think this is it this is your chance except at some point it doesn't feel like you have taken your rightful place at some point it feels like your uncle has handed everything to you just so he can fuck off somewhere else with his guardians

and you wonder if there's ever anything you own that has always been yours to begin with
