This is my beautiful bellydance teacher and friend Kim Sikorsky - she recently dropped her stage name - she is owner and operator of Illumination dance studio ( http://www.illuminationdancestudio.com ) in richmond, VA. Dance Vines is a collaborative effort bettween Khalima Sikorsky of Illumination Dance Studio and Arlechina Verdigris.

Dance Vines is a simple, handy journal for dancers to chronicle their creativity through the year. Dance Vines features a helpful monthly calendar that begins with September 2015 and runs to August 2016, allowing you to keep track of your monthly classes, workshops and performances.

Each month is provided with several pages for notes, dreams, and networking. You will also find sections in the back for recipes, resources, and even a guide to the night sky (Northern Hemisphere). There are also anatomy charts and drum pattern pages!

There are fifteen coloring book pages spread throughout. Each one was based on a 19th century painting with subjects ranging across Spain and North Africa to Italy, Greece, Persia and India. Giving you a chance to spend time with these great works of art in a thoughtful way—adding your own colors and daydreaming your own patterns into a historic framework.

Our theme for this year is growth. We grow like vines, flowering into different kinds of dancers, holding onto one another for support. May all our dance gardens be fruitful!

Body Positive Dancer Roll Call

If you’re a fat dancer, I want to follow you. 

If you believe that dance is for everyBODY, that size does not determine talent, I want to follow you. 

If you believe that dance can save lives and show people how strong and capable their bodies are at every size, I want to follow you.

Belly dance has forced me to watch and control my body and is starting to help me be okay with me.

Shhh, listen

After warming up or doing your regular dance practice… Turn off your music, dim your lights, put on super lightweight/comfy clothes (or wear nothing), and listen to how that quiet voice inside of you is telling you to move… No music, as little noise and stimulus coming in as possible. Try to not put pressure on yourself to be inventive, and try not to judge what happens, either. Just let your body tell you what to do.  If this exercise is hard, try doing it regularly but for very short amounts of time.

I find the idea of dresses has not been that appealing to me costume wise. I'm a larger girl and theres something I feel tends to be less flattering about them... This does alter my view a little bit.
