Her tired eyes drift asleep.
Thoughts of why echoed,
Questions burdoned her tongue.

How can we when their words beat us down?
Must we tear everything down and start new again?
Must we put cotton in our ears just to focus on what is true,
Not to let their lies drip, drip down our throats.
Why must we define ourselves for the sake of their approval?
Why hide in the shadows of their doubt when we are ready to fight!
A doubtful man will continue to doubt until he is put in his place.
A curious child will continue to search until they find what they are looking for.
A scared person will continue to hide until they decide it is safe.
But are we ever?
How are we able to become our own person when they stare at us through a steel gaze,
Cautious and scared is what we have to be.
Never able to figure out what is right in front of us for ourselves.
Never able to explore the depths of the uncharted,
Not able to kiss those of the same lips,
Not able to sigh blissfully as we question where to go tomorrow.
Hear these words,
Scared child,
Open your eyes,
Take a deep breath and start to realize.
Kiss the person of your dreams!
Hike to the highest peak!
Fall in love!
Get hurt!
But never regret who you are and who you are becoming.
For who we are is not something they can steal and barter,
Not something to claim as their own.
The blood running through your veins is that of your own,
No matter who your kin may be,
No matter what they have done.
Their mistakes are not your own,
We do not share our parents' fears.
