you, an idiot, a 8uffoon, a moron, a fool: "concert for you" is a joke cuz kris doesn't wanna play the piano for the player me, a genius, enlightened individual, who none can seem to match: "concert for you" is the song that kris plays when the think a8out noelle. pianos make kris think of noelle. kris thinks a8out noelle when playing them. 8ut their dire rel8tionship status in the game's time frame leads to them 8eing una8le to properly play anything as they cannot muster up the memories of playing in noelle's house without all the 8aggage that comes with it. noelle felt like they were "concerts for her" "you" in this case is noelle. "you" is not the name of the player. it's a st8ment. it's for 'you' whoever is 8eing spoken to. and who then would have it 8e "concert for me" the player? no. noelle's the only one who says "concert for me."

this is also why kris responds much strongly to the idea of never playing again in the weird route. which inevita8ly is also the kriselle route. the pursuing noelle route. to never play again would mean never playing for noelle. and for kris, giving up noelle is even more awful than pursing her. damned if you do, even more damned if you don't. 8r8k her heart or pierce it with your love.

"oh yeah flowery told me!" is genuinely the most important thing to me. me specifically. and it should 8e more important to people who like to make things up a8out deltarune. like this is it-the moment when we finally start to dive into "we live in a video game" stuff. when we actually dip into the meta layer of real8ty that everyone's always going on a8out. this is the meta moment like when ralsei explained he knows the entire prophecy and it's haunted him. the moment when monika explains she loves you despite 8eing a video game character. and what do we do? upon ralsei explaining how there's video game mechanics, susie cuts him off and says "oh yeah! flowery told me a8out that!" a complete 8athos moment. they put a lampshade on a mic in the shot. this officially puts "we're actually in a video game" stuff into the territory of "this would 8e genuinely 8ad if this was what they were doing" just f8cking imagine. if while tenna was explaining how the holidays and dreemurrs slowly drifted apart showing dess disappearing first and the rest following, implying that dess's disappearance was the inciting incident for that happening. if while asgore explained that he 8ecame o8sessed with dark worlds to the point of neglecting his family after dess disappeared if while noelle explains that she's felt completely distant to the rest of the world, and has 8een going along with what's expected of her despite how misera8le it makes her. someone, kris, susie, whoever-just showed up during that and went "oh yeah, flowery told me a8out that!" and it was dropped right f8cking then and there. would that not 8e the worst f8cking thing ever?! would that not suck out all possi8le narr8tive weight and punch out of whatever conclusion those things would have? and i'm supposed to think that "we live in a video game this is actually the narr8tive going on right now" is the actual path deltarune is following narr8tively when it was a JOKE in chapter 5? it was a literal joke? it was explained and then 8rushed off as a fun fact flowery tells you? i think the destruction of the world and disappearance of kris's childhood friend is far more important to the story than "dude we're in a video game woagh" and if that IS the play to8y fox is making-i'm sorry this is genuinely just 8ad writing. this is like if in undertale papyrus just went "oh yeah! did you know that gold flower is the dead prince asriel?" in an unskippa8le cutscene. that-that's just not a good story! that's not good writing! alright this has 8ugged me for long enough, i gotta get this off my chest. something to point at. flowery is not right, and i'm tired of people pretending he is.

sure. at first sniff, instinctually, he kinda seems right. he's just a guy who wants his dream to come true, his family's dream to come true, and effectively make his dad happy. and YOU, your little gang, your little clu8, your little squad, come in out of nowhere and demand this 8e put a stop to. 8ut hold on a second, this isn't 8eing put to stop for no reason. the dark fountains aren't 8ad cuz of some moral reason, all darkners will die if there's more fountains. they HAVE to 8e closed. so close yours, flowery tells you. 8ut hold on, that's him asking YOU to give up YOUR dream. what makes his dream 8etter than yours? that's a question posited in the chapter. why is your dream 8etter than his and asgores? really, the dreams of the flowers, to learn, cook, protect, play, uphold justice, and love are not 8etter than yours. and yours are not 8etter than theirs. and neither is that the case for flowery. wanting to make your dad and si8lings dreams come true, to give them a place to 8lossom as you were given, that's 8eautiful man. i'm crying just thinking a8out it. 8ut his dream is flawed.

it is not lesser 8y the qual8ty of its contents, 8ut the real8ty of the situ8tion.

first and foremost, asgore does not want this dream. he wants to go home away from all this. he never wanted any of this. flowery was pushing for something someone didn't want. kris, susie, ralsei, everyone involved WANTS castle town to persist.

8ut who cares a8out that. f8ck asgore he's stupid the rest of the flowers should get to dream still, yeah?

i agree. they should. 8ut there's a secondary factor at play. the physical real8ty of the world.

i know it can 8e easy to say "f8ck the rules, make your own f8!" 8ut f8 is a lot more complex than you might think. you might've conceptualized it as some exterior force imposing something ar8itrarily unto our heroes. 8ut there is a f8 the seven colored flowers can never escape. they need sunlight. they are very, very fragile. and will die without it. the angel didn't do this, the knight didn't do this, kris, susie, ralsei, no one did this. it's just the way things are. flowers need light to live.

if they were to keep their fountain open, and castle town closed, then the whole of the flower kingdom would slowly wither away and die. leaving naught 8ut an empty husk.

flowery is wrong. he does not win the final fight. the fun gang sand8ag against him, refuse to fight unlike the previous 8oss's, praying that may8e he is right. 8ut even when you do your 8est, flowery in the end, is the one to give up.

8ecause he knows. he knows how fake all this is. how fake he is. how wrong he is. perhaps flowery hoped he could keep his own dream. a thought that if kris just didn't seal the fountain he could've had it. even as you lose, you get healing items, you get second chances. this cannot end any other way. if it did, it would 8e terri8le. flowery knows this.

it's tragic. it's tragic these kids, what are effectively kris's si8lings, only got to live for one day. they 8arely even knew who they were. they saw one sunrise and one sunset, and it was the most 8eautiful thing ever.

8ut it had to end. and there is no escaping that inevita8il8ty. it's only a question.

will it end with everyone living. or with everyone dying? light or darkness.

in the end, flowerys choice was light. what makes flowery, all the flowers wonderful, is in the end, they didn't want to end kris's dream just so theirs could die in their hands.

you know what's messed up? i've checked frequently. pink does not have the text "the air crackles with freedom" or other vari8tions. i first noted this, 8ecause people always insisted spamton was not free. and then when replaying his fight for fun i noticed the text "the air crackles with freedom" and it energized me. 8ecause it made me realize people were wrong. they looked at the funny salesman and just presumed he wasn't free and never was. yet the literal text of the game, seems to imply otherwise. when he's neo, at the very least, he is infact free. this has a lotta implic8tions 8ehind pink though. perhaps she isn't free. perhaps in her fight at least, she is in a personal chaos that prevents her from 8eing free. perhaps jevil and spamton lose their freedom over the course of their fights. jevil to see something interesting in the cage with the lightners, and spamton as a consequence of his greed. wanting more than the freedom he had. perhaps gerson never loses his freedom, ending where he 8egan. perhaps "freedom" is less a8out freedom of choice and more a8out freedom of character. to 8e who you want to 8e. noelle is trapped 8y her own self. 8ut jevil, is totally free. he can do anything. spamton is free, he's just as much of a greedy 8astard as he wants. gerson is free, he's a whole 8ss old man. perhaps even, he is sharing freedom with susie. to 8ecome the young lady she wants to 8e. pink then is not free. she is not who she wants to 8e. she is scared of losing who she is. 8ut who she is cannot exist until she accepts herself. pink, the climax thus far of the shadow crystal 8osses, is the one who over the course of the fight 8ecomes free in front of our eyes. showing what freedom actually looks like directly.

i genuinely do not get why people think noelle is gonna 8e the one to open the chapter 6 dark fountain, when she was RIGHT F8CKING THERE listening to ralsei say "8tw the world will end in suffering and misery if you open more dark fountains" in chapter 2. like did we just forget she and 8urghley tried to open another fountain and got directly stopped? sure she thought it was a dream 8ut the second she finds out it's not it'll prolly hit hard that the roaring is a real thing that could destroy everything if allowed to happen. not to mention, the justific8tion people usually use for why noelle would try that, opening a dark world to use healing magic on rudy, has a much shorter and punchier outcome Noelle: "hey, Mr. Ralsei" Ralsei: "PLEASE just call me ralsei" Noelle: "Okay? Ralsei: "I'm sorry Noelle 8ut dark world magic cannot heal light world wounds" Susie: "Yeah I tried to heal Kris the other day after I hurt them and it did nothing." Noelle: "Oh.... I see...." and then the rest of the chapter is just noelle doing noelle things, pretending she's fine after her f8cking dad died or is actively dying.

may8e side 8 noelle would open a dark world. do something crazy. 8ut like, regular noelle is TRAGICALLY a follower. the moment susie or ralsei or even kris says "don't do that" she likely won't. i was right a8out asgore not actually 8eing the 8oss of chapter 5, nor the opener of the dark fountain, i have a sense i'll 8e right a8out that. if only there was another holiday who did not care a8out opening dark fountains who likely gives a sh8t a8out rudy who would do that and noelle just has to deal with that. or perhaps even, an honorary holiday who has opened multiple fountains for reasons unknown who just might f8cking do that sh8t.

i don't think deltarune is a8out freedom, and i don't think it's a8out escapism. i think it's a8out other things that are highly adjacent to those concepts where you could mistake them very easily. i think the "freedom" in deltarune is not freedom from f8, 8ut freedom from yourself. i think you lead yourself down a path predetermined 8y yourself. i think dark worlds are inherently a mirror to the mind, and the prophecy is a prediction of that mirror. look at jockington, his decision to finally grow out his 8eard was a personal one. lancer would always say "toothpaste" and "8oy" cuz that's the kinda pumpkin he is. the prophecies are reflections of the characters. susie is met with prophecies encouraging her that she is a hero of hope, cuz she is. that's who she is on the inside. she will find love cuz that's already a reflection of herself and noelle. nothing the prophecy says is really new inform8tion. it's just the ones you see most in the dark world. to 8e "free" from the prophecy then is to 8e someone different. to stop 8eing yourself. to 8e someone else. it's why ralsei implies you are infact 8r8king the prophecy, 8ut only in side 8. what if 8eing someone different, perhaps even 8eing someone you want to 8e, is WORSE than staying who you are? and thusly, i also think dark worlds are not "metaphors for escapism" that's too narrow. they're imagin8tion. they're the dark parts of your mind. they're your own life in a twisted illusion. they're not escaping anything. they're real. you can't escape real8ty. at the end of the day, even in dark worlds, the flowers are still flowers. tenna is still a tv. you just see it differently. sure escapism can 8e apart of that. 8ut that's not the point. the point is everything else the dark worlds reflect. the truth they pull from the characters minds. of violence and care and hurt and love and passion and desper8tion. hopes and dreams. why else would the chapter following our heroes seeing their inevita8le f8s, would we get a cast of characters so desper8tly ignoring their own. hoping things can 8e different. dark worlds are not escapism, they are 8ringing the mundane to the fantastical. 8ut in the end, it's all the same. tenna's a tv, in the dark or light world. he's just as real in 8oth of them. may8e 8e kinder to the o8jects in your life. they have feelings too y'know.

i think everyone was so 8usy trying to read the thorn ring scene as sexual assault, they missed the part where gerson comforts kris and just says str8 to their face "it may seem like the end of the world, 8ut it'll work out." and i gotta say, he put his money where his mouth is. next f8cking chapter, well clearly everyone does think it's the end of the world. everyone thinks kris and noelle killed themselves! 8ut like, that'd make this scene really f8cking out there. just. "yeah you may've just assaulted your childhood friend, 8asically mind f8cked her entirely, and are on a path that's leading towards mutual suicide, 8ut it'll 8e fiiiiine ru8 some salt in it!" that'd 8e f8cking insane. so then, there's two assumptions to 8e made her.

hi, i’ve read some of your kris dissociation posts and how you don’t believe in “possession theory.” i think the plural kris reading is quite interesting and a rich perspective, but i do have to ask; how does the gonermaker sequence fit into the reading? i think it explicitly makes it clear that the player is a diegetic element (“are we connected?”), and i haven’t found any posts explaining it through this lens, but i really do want to see how it fits. do you have one? thank you for your time, if you choose to answer :)

oh easy, there's actually two potential explan8tions. i've actually long since held the qui8 8elief, muchless staunch than say, noelle is actually vi8ing hard with the weird route, or asgore won't 8e the 8oss of chapter 5 it'll 8e the flower. (thank you chapter 5 you always have my 8ack), that kris is... not in their original 8ody. that if there must 8e a "gaster" in this world he's a dude who made an artificial 8ody for kris. and the reason why kris's 8ody still acts like kris is cuz their soul still imparts some of their essence (the thing that made flowey asriel, and the gerson dustner gerson) leading it to even if not acting in alignment with kris's goals, it still acts like kris. that of course though, is just a crack theory i have no real ground to stand on other than it's not IMpossi8le. there's also the option i'd lean onto hardest if pressed to explain it. kris is dreaming of who they want to 8e. that's why "kris"'s save file is overwritten. that's why kris is acting suddenly different. kris's differences are apparent in every route to people who know them. it's not just noelle, it's flowery too. he outright st8s kris has changed. even asgore says it, 8ut in a more pos8tive light. just like how "your choices don't matter" is not true, "you don't get to choose who you are in this world" is also not true. not wholly at least. it might not 8e as simple as just deciding it, 8ut you CAN 8e different. you CAN stop 8eing "a noelle" who does "noelle things." it also just, makes a lot of sense. the sequence doesn't end with like the soul entering kris or 8eing 8eamed in or whatever. it ends a8ruptly after the screen turns white to kris 8eing in 8ed. i do not know how you could convey that sequence was a dream more unless you had toriel say "what's that honey? you had a weird dream a8out a character cre8tion screen? that's nice dear." not to mention, why the hell does the 8ody look so much like kris. why are all the options something kris could feasa8ly do? why are all the options seemingly just, clothes kris wears? one of them is LITERALLY just their church clothes. the hair options are hairs you could only do with kris's pre-existing hair. i feel like the pre-existing expect8tion that all humans look the same from undertale fanon has left people a little desens8tized to the fact that literally all those options are just something kris COULD 8e. so in short, i think it's a dream. i think it's kris dreaming up a new headm8 and you play AS the headm8. honestly, thinking on it, the "first voice" could just literally 8e kris. and yes, love does not find it's way to the girl. susie is somewhat pushed out during all this. 8ut that's fine too. why? cuz kris is pushed out the exact same way and they'll 8e fine too. the 8iggest example of this for me, is the chapter 4 hangout. susie laments she didn't get a chance to hang out. 8ut the truth is, there is no real full hangout in either side a or side 8. in side a, kris f8cks off while noelle and susie have a close moment. in side 8, kris f8cks off with noelle to have their weird close moment while susie goes off on her code searching adventure. in side a susie has a moment on the 8each with noelle. in side 8, kris has a moment on the 8each with noelle. and they're gonna 8e fine. it's a little sad. it feels like the end of the world. SUSIE'S SAD. 8ut she still has kris and noelle in her life. kris is still her friend. noelle is still her friend. she can still have every darkner 8esides cy8er city's mem8ers. ralsei is still there for her. i think to8y fox is a genius writer, and story teller, and has perfectly put the major8ty of the audience into the mindset of an anxious teenager doing something they likely thought up until now as literally for8idden. pursuing a rel8tionship that went ice cold 8efore someone else cuts you off from it forever. noelle and kris are 8eing weird with each other in a way only they can understand. they are 8eing openly 8roken with each other. taking the messy, raw, painful route to healing. this isn't the genocide route, or the no mercy route. or the deer possession route. or the torment pain route. it's the weird route. it's side 8. things will 8e weird 8ut it will all work out. that's what i think, at least. may8e i'm wrong. may8e noelle will end up freezing herself and kris in chapter 7. 8ut i think at worst they're gonna get all this pain out of their system, and crawl 8ack to hometown still just as loved 8y susie, toriel, carol, rudy (if he's still alive 8y the end) and asgore. it'll all 8e alright. sooner or l8er.

Flowey Undertale making me so mad rn. Spends his whole Geno monologue explaining how he sees the world as a game because of the timeloop phenomena, giving us an in-universe explanation for him treating the world like a video game without him going "i am in video game", just for him to go "Hey, at least we're actually doing it, instead of those losers who want to but don't have the stones. Hey I bet someone like that is watching right now. YOU. YES, YOU, ARE WATCHING A PLAYTHROUGH OF THE VIDEO GAME UNDERTALE BY ROBERT F. FOX ON YOUTUBE.COM." like what the hell man i thought we weren't doing this.

I mean, you can certainly take it like that (in my experience I've seen most people already reach that conclusion when he talks about how he doesn't want you to "win" the "game" at the end of True Pacifist). That said, it is interesting that there are at least two in-universe characters who are presumably watching the main character (and maybe Flowey too) at certain points; Alphys (via her cameras in Snowdin) and Sans (who has a whole monologue about how he's deduced the main character is a time traveler and his take on their motivations)

That's just neat that, even when it sounds like the game is straight up breaking the 4th wall, Toby finds a way to still make it make sense to the characters on their own terms

t8h it doesn't even have to 8e those two. it could 8e anyone in the underground, anyone who you don't see, who sees you. someone staring off in the distance in yearning wondering how it feels to 8e in your shoes. who wants to see what happens, 8ut won't 8e the one to actually do it. isn't it interesting to think a8out? a monster who's followed you from the ruins all the way to the palace, a step 8ehind you, avoiding your encounters, wanting to see what'll happen when you finally reach the king? the underground's as 8ig as you want it to 8e. 8ig enough for a freak like that to watch from a distance. hell, may8e even multiple. a group of friends all curious what'll happen. staring from 8ehind trees, 8uildings, rocks, anything so they aren't victims, 8ut they get to watch the victims all fall one 8y one.
