This was done as a color/style key for Road to El Dorado. After I worked on Prince of Egypt, I moved onto El D as an Assistant AD. I was given the task, with the great Scott Wills, and Ramone Zibach, to create the initial color script! It was such a great time and we produced over 200 keys on the first run. This painting was inspired by Peter pan’s graphic sensibilities in that it was not a plein air sketch but more of a graphic design solution of simple interlocking shapes and colors. Very hard for me back then, but since this show, I’ve never forgotten the importance of graphic design abstractions as the basis for all my images.

Animation is the perfect genre for using all of your plein air painting skills, and then pushing the relationships further!

Samples of #Storyboards (part 1) from “The Road to El Dorado”, done in Paris in my late studio Bibo Films, with the talented Sylvain Deboissy.
I think it was around 1996. Dreamworks was at a very early stage of pre-production at the time. What a great time it was! This was the very start of a long and fruitful relationship with Dreamworks.
