Luna smiled at her friend, everyone hates small talk so the fact that Kris had a waitress job made Luna laugh at them every chance they got. Not that Luna’s Subway job was super glamorous but she had no problem pretending to be interested in customer relations and her pay certainly didn’t depend on it. Luna nudged Kris and smirked “Hey, how it going?”

Kris crunched up their nose, managing a weak chuckle. They always enjoyed talking to Luna. Luna and Becca were their best friends. Kris was an awkward, loner type of a person. It wasn’t easy for them to trust and let others in, but once they did, it was near impossible to lose them. “Thanks. How are you?”

“I’m alright, just trying to get to the sweet sweet promise land without having a freak out, a girl in my building tried to set her apartment on fire to get out of an exam- wild,” Luna said shaking her head. Although she should be hitting the books like crazy as well, she always tried to get in a call to Kris. They were her best friend after all, and she got separation anxiety for being away from the person. “How are you- besides the exam season of course?”

“Uhm- don’t doubt the powers of some good ass looks,” Luna said with a chuckle, adjusting her laptop screen to see her friend better. “You’re going to be fine.”

“That sounds shitty. Sorry.” Kris murmured. They would probably want to explode; frankly, they were surprised Luna hadn’t. Luna had never really been one to put up with people’s bullshit. “I’m surprised you haven’t yelled at her. Have you?” They smiled at the mention of April. Spring break was much needed for Kris. Between school, work, and now family troubles, they were starting to have a breakdown. Not that they knew how to actually express that. Even if they did, they wouldn’t want to. 

Of course, though, Luna caught on. The pair knew each other too well. “Um- my parents.” Sighing, they gestured for Luna to sit down with them. It was going to be a long conversation.

Luna usually would never put up with such behaviour but she wasn’t kidding about rent. Having a decent apartment in New Jersey was hard enough, she wasn’t going to try and start a fight. Especially when she had a couple of months to get through. “Link has made me soft, I’m trying to keep the peace,” Luna said with a shrug.

Luna sat down immediately, hearing that this had something to do with her parents- she knew it was going to be huge. “What did those assholes do now?”

“I remember those days,” Kris hummed as they thought back to their days at Yale. “That bad?” They asked with a sympathetic crinkle of their nose. Opening the fridge, they got out some of the leftovers from the other night (not that they wanted to think about that night at all) and just barely managing to get a plate down. Damn their shortness. “I’m okay, I guess. Ha. It helps my grandpa, which is all I care about. He worries too much.” A frown crossed their features for a few moments. Ever since the truth had come out, he had been worrying about them nonstop, trying to help Kris process it. “Uh- how long are you here for?”

“Oh yeah- she’s quite the character. Using up most of the hot water, leaves expired food in the fridge, invites oddballs to the house. Like I want that many people knowing where we live,” Luna said shaking her head. She chose to not complain too much, she was with her best friend now and that’s all that mattered. “It’s whatever though, because come April I’ll be back here for awhile. For now I’m just here for a few days, I gotta go back on Friday.” She placed herself at the dinner table and awaited Kris to hand a plate to her. Luna noticed the sudden frown on their face and gave a questioning look. “What’s going on in that head of yours?”

Seeing Luna was a much-needed surprise, and it felt nice for Kris to smile. They felt like they’d aged a million years in the past few days. “Yeah, come on. There should be leftovers in the fridge.”

“God I love this place! I’ve been living off Top Ramen, cold pizza, and coffee. And our roommate- God, I would boot her out if I didn’t desperately need her rent,” Luna rambled following them to the kitchen. She missed L.A a lot but she couldn’t complain considering she was going to her dream school and in a happy healthy relationship. It was just her friends she missed, yeah she loved Link, but he wasn’t her everything. “But how are you? How’s the job? I can’t believe you’re actually a dishpig.”

Kris returned the grin, clinging to her friend tightly. “I missed you.”

“I missed you, too!” Luna squeezed Kris a bit before releasing them and entering the house properly. “Now feed me, that flight felt like it was forever and you know how I feel about airplane food.”
