I wanted to combine the visual of a playing card - as I felt the idea of a piece that also works upside down would work well with the theme - with a contrasting concept, in this case it being day/night and wild/controlled and civilized.

Hopefully everyone is doing fantastic, we sure are. Today, our daily dose of artistic inspiration comes in the form of a brand new artist interview.

And after a nice vacation three human beans is back! This time we had to do Friends + Microcosmos (90′s swiss movie/documentary about bugs, you can watch it on youtube), so I’ll let you figure it out by yourselves. This was a weird one...

Buffy + BDSM (Don’t ask me what we were thinking with that, I have no idea) for this installment of three human beans, as vanilla as humanly possible. I used to love Spike when I watched this the first time around, now that whole relationship is a bit problematic, should we say...

For today’s three human beans: Edgar Allan Poe + Glam! So, The Masque of the Red Death is one of my favorite short stories, and I went with 70′s Glam, so here you go!

(I should explain that we have two lists of characters/universes/contexts and we randomly pick one of both to mix, so sometimes things get weird...)

I recently did this piece for Uncovered Classics, a great site edited by Amy Collier that puts up reviews of some of the best classic books written by women, with the goal of bringing more attention to all the talented but often forgotten female authors. Each review also includes a new cover interpretation as illustrated by a female artist. Including me!

This is my cover for Angel, by Elizabeth Taylor–not the famous actress. It was a book that was both quite funny (the heroine is a fantastically arrogant, perfectly serious liar) and heartbreakingly sad for me. I recommend that you read Amy’s review on the site!

These past couple years I’ve made a concerted effort to read more books by women. I mostly read sci-fi/fantasy, which often seems to be dominated by men, though some of the most enjoyable books I’ve read in the genre have been written by ladies (Hild, Ancillary Justice, Wizard of Earthsea). Because it can be so easy to lapse into a male-dominated booklist (almost all of my assigned books in highschool/college were written by men) I think it’s important to seek out and consume books by women in order to support their voices as well.

Practicing my stitches, I still have a lot to learn but it’s fun and relaxing nonetheless :B

‘The Guardian’: La Guajira, el corrupto lugar donde los niños mueren de sed

Javier Rojas, líder de la Asociación de Autoridades Tradicionales Indígenas Wayúu Shipia, le aseguró a The Guardian que desde el pasado mes de febrero se ha registrado la muerte de por lo menos 25 niños, y calcula que al menos 400 han fallecido en los últimos tres años por las mismas causas. “Tengo informes semanales de la muerte de al menos tres niños”, dijo. Lo más absurdo de la situación es que, en su mayoría, los niños wayuú mueren por causas que son evitables. The Guardian además consultó al procurador Alejandro Ordóñez, quien no dudó en señalar que La Guajira se hunde no por la sequía, sino por la corrupción de sus dirigentes que se han “robado”  los dineros de las regalías.

Tonight marks the opening of Light Grey Art Lab’s Patches and Stitches show– I was really excited for this one. As you all are probably aware at this point LGAL is an amazing gallery, and every show I participate in forces me to step outside my comfort zone and try something new. This is a mix of old and new; in college I did a semester long project of embroidered textiles all about monsters, and in my senior year I screenprinted, appliqued, and embroidered on a series of pieces too.

But looking at the amazing examples of embroidery out there nowadays got me really excited to break back into stitching and mixing paint and thread for some great tactile contrast.

I originally planned to make two embroidered wall hangings referencing the old moral story of the Lady or the Tiger; but I didn’t quite anticipate quite how long it takes to embroider a single piece! Still, it was really a fun challenge to think about how to translate markmaking into thread– I learned a lot making this piece, and I’m excited to start making more (although I might try and mix printed cloth with embroidery–it’d be fun to make an embroidered edition or series!). I would love to play with transparent overlaid screenprint layers with embroidery, for example… I can imagine a Penguin Threads cover with that! Or maybe a solo show exploring ceramics, embroideries, and other 3D installation work. One day…
