In the Great Hall, Sirius sat with his friends during dinner, listening to James and Peter argue about something irrelevant. He was listening in only half-way, his eyes frequently moving to her, the girl who had grabbed his attention all those months ago, who sat several seats away chatting with some other girls in the same house. Sirius’ eyes narrowed slightly as he noticed a Ravenclaw boy smiling at her, leaning in a bit closer than necessary for a casual conversation.

His fist clenched around his fork, feeling a sudden flare of jealousy. He couldn’t stand the way the boy was looking at her, clearly attracted to her.

He tried to ignore it, reminding himself that she wasn’t even his girlfriend, not yet. It was only his unspoken feelings. He wasn’t entitled to her. His eyes, despite his internal attempts, kept going back to the boy chatting with her, feeling his jaw clench a few times in annoyance.

His jealousy grew as he watched the Ravenclaw continue to flirt with her, even though she seemed oblivious to his intentions. He couldn’t stand the way the boy’s eyes kept lingering on her.

He tried to stay calm, but it was getting harder and harder as time passed. He had been watching her for a little while now, and he wanted to be the one sitting beside her, chatting with her, being the one that made her smile and laugh. He wanted to be the one that was getting her attention. He wanted to be with her, not watch some other guy trying to steal her heart.

He couldn’t take it any longer. He couldn’t bear to see someone else flirting with her right in front of him. He pushed his food aside, his appetite completely gone. He was growing more irritated by the second, but his frustration only grew as he saw the boy laughing at something she said, leaning in even closer. His jaw was clenched so tightly, it began to ache.

She subtly shifted back, a look of discomfort on her face. It was clear that whatever she said, she didn’t think that it was that funny, and the boy’s laugh and closeness only seemed to make her uncomfortable. But when the boy touched her shoulder, she was quick to remove his hand.

Sirius felt his anger only grow stronger. It was clear that you weren’t comfortable with the guy getting too close, and yet he persisted in flirting with you. This was the final straw for Sirius. He couldn’t sit idly by while someone else tried to put the moves on you. He decided he'd intervene, he knew he had to. He looked over at James, who was still engaged in his conversation, oblivious to the situation unfolding at the table.

He knew that he couldn't wait any longer. He stood up, ignoring James and Peter's curious looks as he went. He made his way to the part of the Great Hall where you sat. As he approached, the scene was just as he expected. The Ravenclaw boy was still shamelessly attempting to get your attention, and the look on your face was clearly uneasy.

Her eyes flickered up to Sirius as she saw him approach, sending a small smile to her best friend who was acting like a prince charming to her in this moment.

His heart skipped a beat as your eyes flicked up to his, and he saw the brief smile on your lips. It calmed him slightly, but his jealousy was still burning deep within. As he got closer, he noticed how the guy was still talking to you, blatantly ignoring Sirius's arrival. That just enraged him even more.

She reached out her hand as she spoke, ignoring the Ravenclaw completely now. “Is it time to go?” She asked, her eyes silently pleading with him to go along with it.

He recognized the silent plea in your eyes, and without hesitation, he took your hand in his, giving you a small, comforting squeeze. "Yeah, it is.” He responded, his voice slightly firmer than usual. He looked back at the guy, who was now watching them with a mix of confusion and annoyance, and he couldn't help but smirk.

She stood up without so much as a goodbye, letting him guide her out of the Great Hall. “Thank you.” She spoke her gratitude once they were through the doors.

He kept a firm but gentle grip on your hand, guiding you out of the Great Hall. Once they were outside, far enough away from the commotion and prying ears, he turned to face you directly, his eyes still holding a hint of jealousy, but also a tinge of protectiveness. "You’re welcome.” He said softly, his gaze intense as he looked at you. "I couldn’t sit there and watch him hit on you like that."

“They’re like vultures.” She joked. “They come and just pick you apart.”

He frowned, feeling a twinge of annoyance at the thought of boys like that hounding her and making her uncomfortable. He took a step closer, his protective instincts kicking in. "They're idiots.” He muttered, his voice laced with a hint of bitterness. "They have no idea the kind of person you really are. They're too busy trying to impress you, instead of taking the time to actually talk to you and get to know you." He looked at her, his gray eyes soft and searching, as if seeking assurance that she wasn’t affected by their advances.

“Look at you being all sweet.” She teased, giving his hand a small squeeze.

His tense expression eased up a bit as you teased him. He squeezed your hand back, feeling a momentary flicker of contentment amidst the jealousy and worry. He rolled his eyes slightly, a small smile playing at the corners of his lips. "Sweet? Me? You should get your eyes checked."

• summary: the day following the horrific night of october 31st, 1981

Remus walked through the aftermaths of the Potter residence, the house that previously held an abundance of laughter and love was now destroyed, the light taken away. The house was silent, no sign of James’ loud jokes or Lily scolding them for their pranks. All Remus saw before him was his best friend’s broken house.

There were memories in here, Remus’ memories. He could still see Lily smiling and chatting with him while he and James sat at the kitchen table. He could see James and him laughing to the point they were in tears from a dumb joke. He could see the four of them gathered in the sitting room, lost in their conversations for hours.

He could see the four of them gathered around the table drinking butterbeer, James and Sirius making jokes and Remus and Lily listening while trying to hold back their own laughter.

It was all gone now, all that was left was silence.

His shoulders slumped, an emotion of pure disbelief and sadness washing over him. His best friends were gone. The people he called family were no longer with him, and he felt as if a part of himself had been ripped out from him.

He stood amongst the mess that was the Potter’s home, silently looking around at the once filled house now completely empty.

Her steps came up slowly beside him, stepping over a little bit over a mess that was left the night before, careful not to mess anything up as she walked closer up behind her husband.

He was so submerged in his own thoughts that he didn’t initially notice her presence. So when he heard her footsteps approaching him, it caused him to nearly spring from his spot on the ground. He was on guard until he noticed it was his wife.

His shoulders slumped as he turned to her, running a hand through his messy brown hair before his gaze returned to the mess of the once beautiful house.

It was a fragile time, and she knew it. she kept quiet, sadness brimming her slightly red eyes. Lily was her best friend, and now she would never be able to experience another moment with her. Her eyes scanned the house. Thankfully, it wasn’t destroyed on the first floor, at least not by much. She couldn’t bear to go upstairs.

Her eyes took in Lily’s belongings which merged with James’ as Harry’s toys surrounded them. it broke her heart even more. Slowly, she ran her hand over her stomach.

His gaze watched as his wife’s hand began to mindlessly trail down to her slightly protruding stomach, his eyes following the movement with sadness.

He knew how heartbroken she was over the loss of her best friend because he was just as devastated with the loss of his best friends. Remus felt as though a piece of him was missing, no longer being able to see them again, or hear about their newest pranks, or be on the receiving end of their teasing.

He took a step closer to her, a silent need for comfort and closeness taking over.

Standing behind her now, he gently wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest while his chin rested in the crook of her shoulder. He inhaled sharply, needing her close. The scent of her hair, the way she leaned against him, it was comforting.

His arms tightened around her just a little as he held her, trying his best to ground himself.

She let her body relax for the first time in the last few hours, closing her eyes as she tried to keep her emotions at bay.

He felt her slightly relax in his arms, his eyes flickering closed as well. There were no words for what happened to James and Lily, but Remus felt the need to be near his wife right now. Being without her didn’t even seem like an option to him now.*

His eyes remained shut, his arms still wrapped around her as his chest against her back slowly rose and fell. The two were silent for a long moment simply taking in the comfort that the other’s presence provided.

His hand began mindlessly rubbing her stomach, the realization of what was to come suddenly hitting him. The fact that he was going to be a father, the fact that the child she was carrying in her abdomen was his responsibility now. His to protect and raise now.

His hold on her waist tightened again, his chin moving so his head was now resting against her shoulder, his face buried in her neck.

“It doesn’t feel real.” She whispered.

He inhaled a shaky breath, his nose gently nuzzling her skin. He knew exactly what she meant, this whole situation was like a bad dream. “I know..” He replied back just as quietly. Just days ago he was standing in this house laughing and chatting with his friends, and now today it was gone. James and Lily were gone.

His hand continued to lay flat against her stomach, the action almost being more for him than her.

He fell silent again, the sound of a soft, almost inaudible sigh leaving his lips before he nuzzled into the crook of her neck again. The need to be closer to her was almost overbearing.

He couldn’t bring himself to let her go, or leave this destroyed house, the thought of doing so brought a sense of panic to Remus. Not yet. He needed more time.

“We should collect their things… oh, and poor baby Harry.” She whispered, her voice breaking more. “Do you really think he’ll be alright at his aunts?”

He grimaced at her suggestion, his arms tightening just a little more around her. He didn’t want to do any of that, he just wanted to keep her in the safety of his arms. His thoughts turned to little Harry as well, a frown set on his face. The idea of Harry living with the Dursley’s didn’t sit right with him, he knew how much James wasn’t a fan of them. He let out a soft sigh, he still didn’t believe this was happening. “Dumbledore said he would be fine…”

“Dumbledore also said we would all be safe, what a lie that was.” What was that in her voice? Anger perhaps?

His breath caught, her words causing a slight pang of pain within his chest. She was right. Dumbledore had promised their safety and yet here they were. Their friends dead, Sirius locked in Azkaban. He was silent for a moment, his grip on her waist having tightened without him realizing, his breaths slowly evening out again “You’re right.”

She couldn’t help it, maybe it was the hormones, or the nonstop feeling of loss around them, but she broke into a sob.

His eyes widened, taken back by the sudden sounds of sobs coming from his wife. One of his hands had begun to trace comforting shapes on her stomach while the other was still wrapped around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest.

He gently shushed her, attempting to soothe her tears. It pained him to hear her so upset.

He held her tight against him, his chin moving from her shoulder so that his head was resting against the top of hers. He was at a loss for words, what could he even say right now? All that they could do was stand in the mess of the Potter’s home, letting her grieve and cry for a future that would no longer happen.

He felt his own shoulders begin shaking as she cried. Holding her in his arms only made it more real, the thought that he’d never see James and Lily again. His best friends were dead and never coming back. His grip on her waist tightened again as his other hand held her stomach, silently trying to comfort himself with the fact that he still had her and their baby.

He was a mess, tears welled up in his eyes as he attempted to keep them from falling. He pressed his face into the crook of her neck, silently crying along with her.

He held her close, allowing them both to cry and grieve together. The silence around them only served as a reminder of the grief that filled the air. There were no sounds of laughter or light banter as James and Lily would do when the couple visited them. All that was left was the silence and the heartbreak.
