“No, no it’s my fault, I should have been watching where I was going. This is seriously like the third time this has happened to me this week.” She let out a small laugh. “Maybe we should step to the side a bit, so we don’t repeat our mistakes.”

“Oh-” Remus began, brows furrowing despite his smile, though the expression was one of concern. “Maybe you should check if you need glasses or something. Or just be more careful, you might seriously injure yourself next time you bump into someone.” His smile brightened once again, glancing about with a small nod and slight laugh as he had to agree, taking a couple of steps back to keep out of the way. “...Enjoying the evening?”

“Am I really that terrifying?” Marlene teased, having seen the way his body jumped when she came up behind him, “I know that I wield a beater’s bat, but you don’t know that I’ll hit you with it. As long as you don’t attack me first… or insult me.. or Mary… Well, knowing you, none of those are necessarily things you do.” The alcohol had her spilling out words she would have normally clipped by now. However, the smile plastered on her face proved that she meant no harm. “You should drink it anyway,” She urged, “It will be fun.”

“Well, yes.” Remus nodded as he answered, as if in thought, though the deadpan tone and quick response suggested his answer was practically a no-brainer. “I should hope not. If I did insult one of you I’d expect I deserve a hit.” He chuckled quietly, quite relaxed for once as soon as he’d gotten over the shock of Marlene’s sudden appearance. “Glad to know I don’t have a reputation for rudeness, though.” He hadn’t quite noticed her tipsiness, perhaps because he wasn’t paying attention, so distracted by everything else in the room that it made it hard to think about just one thing at a time. He returned his attention to her, however, raising an eyebrow at the suggestion. “--No thanks, I’d rather stay as sober as possible. You’ve seen how Howard’s acting.”

24th October || Owlery

The owlery was cold at the best of times, being situated on an isolated tower as one of the highest points didn’t lend itself to warmth; particularly with a lack of closable windows. But the fact it was October and winter was rapidly descending made it that much colder, and Remus found himself wishing he’d put on gloves instead of just slinging his scarf around his neck. He shivered as he stepped over the threshold, glad only that the wind was somewhat blocked by the stone walls. At least he’d had the sense to write his letter before journeying up there. Though, it would be just his luck to find that in attempting to locate his owl, a particularly strong gust of wind would rush through and whip the envelope from his hands, sending it flying across the room for Remus to chase after before it fell down the stairs or worse, out of a window.

Marlene noticed Remus standing over in the corner alone. Once a wallflower, always a wallflower. With a cheeky grin, no doubt fueled by the punch she had already partaken in, she strolled over to him. “You have to spend money to make money,” She teased, holding up the poker chips that she had already doubled. One thing Marlene McKinnon was good at was hiding her emotions - that made poker one of her ideal games. Unfortunately, the alcohol was telling her that she should now begin focusing on games of luck instead of ones of skill. “Some fifth year spiked it,” She said offhandedly, pointing at the punch, “If I had my way with it, you wouldn’t even know it was spiked until too late.”

Remus started just a little when Marlene spoke up, caught off guard and internally kicking himself for the way he jumped at the sound of a voice. He did keep quite a hold of himself, however, raising an eyebrow at the number of chips in her hand -- impressed, but not really particularly surprised. “I don’t really feel like making money. I’d rather not risk losing it all and embarrassing myself.” He’d already well established for himself that gambling was not for him, though the fact Remus hadn’t participated in any of the large number of games laid out around the hall likely didn’t support his claims he couldn’t play. Any argument would be he wouldn’t know if he didn’t try, but he didn’t particularly want to, either. He looked back to the drinks as Marlene admitted to knowing it was spiked, nodding his head in an almost disappointed manner, but he had been expecting it. “Well, I suppose I’ll have to thank you for being kind this time and letting me know.”

“I’m not amazing at them myself but why not?” Frank was willing to redeem himself, to prove to himself that he could do it and that he wasn’t terrible…Although, if he ended up losing miserably he had a feeling he’d just accept the defeat. He wasn’t willing to lose all his money and wound his pride even more. “I’ll think I’ll just be playing at the minimum. I don’t think I qualify as a “player” quite yet.”

“I’ve never heard a better reason to gamble.” Remus laughed quietly, perhaps making it hard to tell if he meant to be sarcastic or encouraging. Either way, he didn’t mean to put Frank off. “Sounds like a good plan though, I think. Confidence seems to be key; no one seems to know what they’re doing, if you do, maybe everyone else will falter.” He gave a small shrug, eyes darting away again to glance along the table at the players already seated.

“What do you think?” Lily asked, coming up beside Remus Lupin and tilting her head in exaggerated scrutiny of the refreshments, “Virgin cocktail or drunken evening in disguise? I want to say they can’t all be spiked yet.”

For her part, Lily was having a good time. She had an abiding love of games and a childhood playing poker with her Godmother that served her well enough - but she knew that this was a time for moderation, hadn’t even bought a new dress when prompted. A few fun games, some conversation, hopefully, maybe, some Honeydukes money won at the end of the day; as usual, getting sloshed was not on the agenda.

Remus looked up at the sound of Lily’s voice, drawn out of his own little world quite calmly for once. He drew a breath, letting it out in a heavy sigh to emphasise his thoughts, though he had to shake his head. “I’d love to be optimistic, but I don’t know if I can trust half the people in this room. I’d rather be thirsty than risk getting pissed.” He offered a small smile, laughter in his eyes as he looked back over to Lily. “Having fun, at least? I can’t say I expected this to be a social event, makes me wonder what else they’ve got up their sleeves for this year.”

Jenny wormed her way over to the drinks table. The room was almost overwhelmingly crowded, and getting a drink seemed to be the most polite way to take a moment and catch her breath. She poured herself a tall glass of punch, not really caring whether or not it was spiked. As she turned to walk back towards the masses, she almost bumped into Remus. 

“Whoops! Sorry there. I didn’t notice you were standing there.”

If Remus had been paying a little more attention, he probably would’ve stepped aside to keep out of Jenny’s way, but as it happened, he wasn’t, so he didn’t. He did start when she came so close, snapping out of his thoughts rather quickly with an apologetic laugh. “No, it’s alright, my fault. I should’ve seen you coming.” He grimaced a little, embarrassed at his own perceived stupidity. “I guess it’s not really a convenient place to stand.”

A casino night would’ve had to be at the bottom of Remus’ list of expected social events at school, if not his last guess. He wasn’t necessarily complaining, plenty of people seemed to be having fun, but it wasn’t exactly his idea of a fun evening. He’d gone of course, his friends went so he went, there were other things to do besides gamble and even if he did join he could only lose the money he’d been given -- right? In any case, he’d avoided the tables and stuck to the sides with whatever conversation came his way. He’d come to look for a drink over the course of the evening, though for the moment he had stuck to simply eyeing the drinks and wondering whether or not someone had spiked them; he wasn’t exactly in the mood for a surprise kick in his punch.

Remus showing up snapped Frank out of his own little mind, a mind that was currently trying to figure out how the hell to play the game that was in front of him. He had actually played poker before but it hadn’t turned out all that well, which had frustrated Frank more than anything. Frank wasn’t about losing in any capacity of his life, including a game of poker. Maybe if he could focus and really pour his energy into it he could redeem himself. “I kind of do…and I think that I can do it.” He ran a hand through his hair and looked over to Remus. “What about you?”

“Wh- Me?” Remus blinked, looking over to Frank almost surprised. “God no, I’m terrible at card games.” He looked back over to the table, very content with his decision to keep out of it and avoid embarrassing himself as participation would inevitably entail. But watching instead was proving to be quite enjoyable, even if he did feel bad over other people’s losses. “...Well, if you know it, I reckon you couldn’t do too bad right now. I don’t think we have too many poker experts around, you could try it before people start to pick it up.”

Frank was feeling slightly out of place at the event the night, having shown up alone and not with too much knowledge about the ins and outs of gambling. He didn’t like the feeling of it and the unpredictability – for a boy who preferred to stay in control losing large of sums of money at random really didn’t interest him. But he decided to give it a shot, starting small and seeing what happened from there. It wasn’t like he had much else to do there, after all. “This doesn’t look half bad,” he said mostly to himself as he eyed the table, eyes raking the chips. He recognized the game but whether he’d be good at it or not was another question.

Remus was no gambler, he hardly knew any kind of card games that weren’t played in a friendly way with friends and he severely doubted ‘Go Fish’ was a gambling game. He didn’t have much interest in throwing his money away in any case, even if he did have skill his life was testament to the fact he had incredibly poor luck -- and that was half of what gambling was. At least, he thought so, wandering around the tables and watching others play. It was purely out of interest, wanting to see how the games were played. He’d stopped at nearly every table that night, quite ready to leave completely unless something interesting was to happen. Frank’s appearance may or may not have fallen into the category of ‘interesting things’, but his comment did, catching Remus’ attention as he was about to leave and instead drawing him back to the table. His eyes flickered over the cards, the players, back to Frank with a small frown. “I wouldn’t. Poker’s a nasty game...Unless you know it?”

“James always gets his way. It is in his DNA. You should have probably realized that by this point,” She smiled, patting him on the cheek with a pitying look. “You are too soft for anything, Lupin.” Marlene stretched her arms up before giving him a small wave. “I should find Mary before she goes off and finds some way to cloak herself from me,” She admitted.

Remus couldn’t help a small, entertained chuckle at Marlene’s deductions -- she wasn’t at all in the wrong. Though whether the reasoning was really because of his DNA or not was up for debate. “You’re not wrong...” He lent away as she patted his cheek, pulling a face though only playfully. Once again he found he couldn’t honestly argue with her, though the temptation was there, he wasn’t very good at defending himself. “If you have to. I’ll tell her you’re looking for her if I see her.” Technically, he wasn’t lying. Though the statement implied he would direct Mary towards her concerned friend, he was rather thinking the opposite. Of course, there was no reason Marlene had to be aware of that.

“It’s nice to meet you too.” She shook her head. “I insist though, you are not looking very well. I promise I don’t bite and all I will do is guide you to the nurse. I am sure that she could make you feel better.” Violetta was not going to really take no for an answer from the sixth year. He seemed like he could use help and boys could be stubborn about getting help from the doctors.

Remus gave a small breath of laughter, attempting to shake his head again despite the girl’s insistence -- though he was sure he was fighting a losing battle. There wasn’t a solid way to convince anyone he didn’t need to go to the nurse and he didn’t get the feeling the Slytherin would let him go alone. An odd thought. “Well I...” He sighed, looking back and forth as if there would be an answer there. There was no real reason for him to protest. “I suppose. If it’s not an issue for you, I’d appreciate a hand.”

She couldn’t stop the small snort of laughter that escaped her at his comment, “If you had said you thought homework was fun, then I would have no choice but to dip my finger in ink,” she paused to mimic dipping her finger in quill ink, “and write nerd on your forehead.”Without really thinking about it, she leaned forward and pressed her finger to his forehead, her finger invisibly tracing the letters out. Her hand lingered on his forehead longer than necessary, and her cheeks flamed as she realized this. She pulled her hand back to herself and sat back down in her seat across from him, smiling shyly. Her attention followed his to his papers, and the mess of ink that they were. Through the years that he had been helping her with DADA, she had seen his handwriting plenty times, and she was pretty certain his penmanship was a lot neater than what was before her. She thought it was odd, but before she had another moment to think about it he latched onto her suggestion. She grinned widely as he seemed interested in the idea of ice skating. “Not to brag, but I’m pretty good at it. I’ll help you stay upright,” she offered.

Remus’ eyes followed Mary’s finger, only glancing back to her with a grin as the digit touched his forehead and he was forced to look elsewhere. Not that he really minded, the touch of concentration on her face beside her smile was more than pleasant a view -- though that thought and their proximity made his own cheeks warm as hers did. He cleared his throat, not allowing that to deter him as he straightened up. “I better not then, wouldn’t want you to get your finger dirty.” His attention flickered back to his papers, determinedly not allowing himself to focus on Mary’s smile again. Though disappointed with his handwriting, he knew he wasn’t going to get any more of the work done and at the very least he could copy up what he’d written far better when his wrist had been given more than a few hours to rest. He folded up the parchment as he listened to Mary, eyes flickering up on occasion to share his smile. “Well-- If you promise not to let me fall and make a fool of myself then I suppose I don’t have any reason to say no.” He chuckled quietly, looking up properly once again once he’d finished fiddling with his paper. “Though I might have to apologise in advance in case I pull you down with me.”

Something about his hand caught her eye, but she wasn’t quick enough to figure out what about it had before it disappeared behind his head. Mary contemplated his question for a moment, “If you have nothing better to do then I don’t see anything wrong with catching up on homework so you have more free time in the future,” Mary reasoned, “I think it only makes you a nerd if you’re using homework as an excuse to skive off doing something fun.” She shrugged, trying to think of something fun to do as an excuse to convince Remus to put off his homework for another time. Finding an excuse to hang out with Remus outside of their tutoring sessions was just a bonus… a coincidental bonus and surely not her main goal. “Does ice skating sound like more fun than homework? I heard that some students had been able to charm the part of the lake frozen.”

“And this is the part where I say; ‘but homework is fun’?” Remus nearly rolled his eyes, rather happy that Mary hadn’t stooped to poke fun at him even though he’d been the one to bring it up himself. Maybe he was just so used to being called a swot -- jokingly of course -- that being excused from it was a nice change. “I haven’t got anything more fun to do at the moment, it’s either this or James will come bursting in to announce his latest scheme and I’ll be forced to stop.” He turned his attention back to the papers, eyes scanning over what he’d written last and soon coming to the conclusion that he really shouldn’t have bothered. His handwriting was all scratchy and the paper blotted with ink, if he’d just waited another day or two to write the essay he wouldn’t have wasted a perfectly fine bit of parchment. He sighed, cut off when Mary mentioned ice skating, head shooting up to meet her gaze. Was she inviting him to join her? “Have they? I mean, it does. A bit. I have to say I’m not exactly any good at ice skating, I’ve only done it a couple of times and I always fall over at least five times.”

Her smile was tentative and confused at Remus’ strange behavior. It wasn’t the first time she felt like he was hiding something from her, but she had no clue what possibly Remus had to hide. Prying into it wasn’t her nature, so she shrugged it off and tried not to let it bother her. She made her face into a comical grimace at the mention of Slughorn, “Yeah, he’s not too kind about missing assignments is he? I heard the only way he accepts assignments late is if you offer to serve at one of his parties.” She peered at the paper he had been writing on moments ago, “Is that what you’re working on? Slughorn’s assignment? You know it’s not due for weeks still, right?”

Remus smiled, just quietly entertained by Mary’s reaction to the mention of the professor. Though he found the man entertaining in a number of ways, he certainly wasn’t top of the list of teachers every student was eager to see, including him. “God, I hope not. Even if he does, I don’t think I want to find out. maybe that’s a deliberate rumour he made up, just so he doesn’t have to deal with late work coming in.” He laughed a little, expression then turning bashful as his eyes followed hers to his (rather messy) papers on the table. “Uhm, well, yes--” He pulled a face, embarrassed, one hand lifting to scratch the back of his head. Having to admit to being a swot was more embarrassing than he’d come to realise, but there was still a smile on his face once he’d spoken, just nearly shy. “It is, and I know. I just wanted to get it out of the way. Plus I had some free time, so I thought I might as well have caught up on the rest of my work. I missed a few lessons and I finished copying the notes so...I suppose this makes me a bit of a nerd, doesn’t it?”

VERNACULAR

Remus is half-blooded, with a Welsh, muggle mother and English, pure-blood father. For most of his life she didn’t work, staying home to look after him and as a result, Remus grew up listening to her talk more often than his father. His life was a fairly considerable blend of muggle and magical cultures. His mother did all the chores and everything she could in her own way (even insisting she did it the ‘normal way’ when Remus’ father offered to simply enchant an object to do whatever chore), she told Remus muggle fairy tales and shared her own taught family values. His father shared magical fairy stories, offered his own enchantments that his wife would allow and passed on his family values. So whilst in his isolated life, Remus has had little reference to pop culture either muggle or magical aside from a radio, he understands the basic values of both sides.

Now, as an additional result, listening to his mother his whole life also means he has inherited her own way of behaving and speaking -- muggle ways, even perhaps moreso than his father’s when the man was at work all day. So Remus has reference to muggle culture, or uses specifically muggle exclamations such as ‘God’ in place of ‘Merlin’ (though he uses the two interchangeably) just as often, if not more than magical references.

Emma shot the boy a pitiful smile. Honestly, he seemed too sweet and awkward to be involved with people like Potter and Black. She almost felt bad, in a way- she figured that perhaps they used him, maybe for good grades, and in return, gave him popularity. Then again, she had figured the other one- Peter, she remembered- was in the group for the same reason, so maybe it was true that Remus was just like his other friends, and he was only putting on a front for Emma. Still, she continued the conversation, a bit curious on whether or not the boy had other motives. 

“No, he certainly wouldn’t- which is why I wonder how he could possibly manage to have friends like you, who would.” She said, shaking her head and chuckling, playing it off as another joke.

“I don’t know, strange thing that, I suppose. I’d say opposites attract but that always has some romantic connotations.” He pulled a slight face, only joking. In any other circumstance, he might’ve tried to even jokingly say that James wasn’t all bad -- for he wasn’t, he was kind to his friends -- or more readily defended him. But Remus did very much want to go to dinner, and getting into uncomfortable or awkward situations was always something he wanted to avoid and he was certain bringing up his friend’s supposedly good qualities when it wasn’t necessary would cause an unnecessary argument that he would much rather avoid. Or perhaps, as usual, he was over-thinking. Emma didn’t seem at all as bad as some made her out to be, or any slytherins for that matter. Then again, perhaps she was just being as polite in response to him, there were a good many people in the school who would put up fronts just for show. Not that Remus wanted to believe that, in fact he couldn’t really believe the thought had crossed his mind, almost embarrassed to know he could even for a moment think so little of someone without provocation, despite the fact he hadn’t voiced his thoughts aloud. “--I should let you get that quidditch stuff away before the food gets cold.”
