Taiji looks like he's in the hospital in this picture, he's in a white room and on his wrist he seems to has those paper bracelets they put on you when they admit you?

honestly tho like people who aren’t…raised by alcoholics don’t really…understand roses distaste for the moments when mom lalonde is affectionate and Trying. theres something sickening and horrible about the way emotionally absent parents try to suddenly make up for years of neglect in short bursts but you really dont have any idea who this person loving you is, not really, so its empty, even if genuine. its hard to explain to someone who comes in thinking “oh but mom loves rose” the gut wrenching disgust and horror that comes with the territory of “this person loves me but i know this moment of affection won’t last” like. people who write off rose as just being 13 really just. they dont get it
also, a similar feeling in how like…. Fun mom lalonde is. people always loved/love my mother bc she’s fun as fuck and affectionate and has a great sense of humor and is a great cook. she’s also been drunk every night since i’ve been born, so i always felt like… bad and weird when people would be like “your mom is so cool!” bc i couldn’t mirror or appreciate their enthusiasm
i’d just be uncomfortably be like “yeah, i know”
cuz they just didn’t get it. how when you’re around it every night instead of maybe once or twice in your life, you see the dysfunction; the pedantic speech; the drunken misunderstandings; loudness and “fun” until 2am when you, a kid, have school the next morning. when communication and high moods break down and she gets into uneccesary fights with your dad for just as long, just as loudly, and you’re just enduring the abuse as a third party. you’re just tense and sleepless, almost every night.
you can’t make those friends or peers understand it, so they’re just confused about you resenting these qualities in your parent.
I’m gonna add another angle and it is the: “They only love me when they’re drunk” angle.
Even if they do show affection they only show it when they are not in their right state of mind. So can that affection that live ever be true? Or is it just a passing fancy by someone who can’t even live in the world around them without having their mental state changed through an addictive substance.
Especially if it’s a pattern, you learn that love is false and everything they say is a lie.
Also, also, even if they’re nice it’s still terrifying especially as a child. The adult that normally doesn’t care for you has all its attention on you now. You have no idea what they’re gonna do and the spotlight is on you.
Lastly, you don’t just get used to having an alcoholic parent. It’s not something that normalizes. It is a constant state of what are they gonna do this time? And how do I (as a child) mitigate the damage?
I love Rose as a character and it makes sense why she had the relationship she had with her Mom both the distaste and the love for her.
I also think her struggles with alcoholism are an unintentionally beautiful remark about how so many of us are afraid of becoming alcoholics like our parents.
Rose is the opposite of a therapist friend, she encourages bad habits and makes your problems worse. She's not a mean person but she isn't above messing with others for her own entertainment. She's also known to take people's words and actions in bad faith, even if they had good intentions. Obviously we see this with her Mom, but some of her interactions with Kanaya also show how she's so irony-pilled that she struggles to take anything seriously or at face value. In her mind everything has a double meaning, no one is geniune, and her relationships suffer because of it. Also she clearly has terrible coping mechanisms so I wouldn't trust her to give anyone advice.
Karkat is the true therapist friend, even if most of his advice is screamed in your face. He's empathetic, he's a great listener, and he's one of the more selfless characters in the comic. He geniunely wants the best for his friends while also having the emotional intellegence to understand multiple sides of a story. Rose loves her friends, but her upbringing impacted her ability to trust. Much like Dave she uses irony as a shield to protect her own feelings, and giving others the benefit of the doubt is just too risky.
I FEEL LIKE A LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T TAKE THE TIME TO ANALYZE MOM LALONDE’S ABUSE OF ROSE DUE TO THE FACT THAT HER TYPE OF ABUSE IS SO NORMALIZED IN SOCIETY.
EXAMPLE: SHE’S AN ALCOHOLIC, BUT SINCE SHE’S SHOWN TO BE MORE OF A “HAPPY AND/OR EMOTIONAL” DRUNK, PEOPLE DON’T SEE IT AS “AS HARMFUL” AS A “VIOLENT/ANGRY” DRUNK.
GROWING UP AROUND SOMEBODY WHO IS CONSTANTLY AND CONSISTENTLY DRUNK, WHETHER OR NOT THEY’RE “MAD” STILL HAS A NEGATIVE IMPACT ON YOU. THIS IS INCREASED EVEN MORE SO WITH THE PARENTIFICATION THAT HAPPENS WITH ROSE.
IT’S EXPLICITLY SHOWN THAT, SINCE A YOUNG AGE, ROSE HAS PLAY “THERAPY SESSIONS” AND SUCH. WHICH YEAH, LITTLE GIRLS ARE WEIRD AND ALL, BUT I FEEL THAT’S A DIRECT PARALLEL TOWARDS ROSE TAKING THE BRUNT OF THE EMOTIONAL WELLFARE OF HER *OWN MOTHER* (ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING THE WHOLE “SHE WAS MORE OF A SISTER, THAN A MOTHER, TO ME” COMMENT SHE MAKES IN THE COMIC ITSELF.)
THIS ISN’T EVEN CONSIDERING HOW ROSE DOESN’T DELVE INTO ACTUAL “THERAPY”/“PSYCHOANALYSIS” FIRST, BECAUSE SHE IS LITERALLY 13 YEARS OLD, AND IT IS ALSO 2009. BUT ALSO BECAUSE A LOT OF HER “ANALYSIS’” ARE JUST PRECONCEIVED NOTIONS SHE HAS ABOUT EVERYBODY ELSE THAT SHE *WANTS* TO BE RIGHT ABOUT.
WE’RE DIRECTLY SHOWN THAT ROSE IS NOT UNBIASED IN HOW SHE VIEWS THINGS, ESPECIALLY HER MOTHER (BOTH IN THE BEGINNING OF THE COMIC, AS WELL AS THE LATTER HALF OF THE COMIC IN TALKING ABOUT HOW SHE SHOULD’VE BEEN A BETTER DAUGHTER.)
A LOT OF PEOPLE ALSO FORGET THAT THE PARENTFICATION AND EMOTIONAL RELIANCE OF THAT DEGREE ON A CHILD, AS AN ADULT, IS A FORM OF EMOTIONAL INCEST. I DO THINK MOM LALONDE HAD A LOT OF ISSUES HERSELF (WHICH IS OBVIOUS, CONSIDERING THE ALCOHOLISM), BUT SHE HANDLED THEM IN SUCH A HARMFUL WAY THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T LIKE TALKING ABOUT. MOSTLY BECAUSE MOM LALONDE DOES HAVE “GOOD” MOMENTS (TRYING TO GIVE GIFTS TO ROSE CONSTANTLY), WHEN FURTHER ANALYZED ARE SEEN AS WAYS TO “MAKE THINGS GO AWAY” BECAUSE OH LOOK! A SHINY THING! NOW YOU WONT BE UPSET! WHICH IS NOT A HEALTHY WAY TO ENGAGE WITH *ANYBODY* AS IT COMPLETELY NEGLECTS THE UNDERLYING EMOTIONAL ISSUES AT HAND.
MOM LALONDE IS A VERY NUANCED CHARACTER, AS I DON’T THINK SHE HAD *GENUINELY* HARMFUL INTENTS. SHE MADE BAD DECISIONS, AND THE CONSEQUENCES OF THOSE ACTIONS DIRECTLY IMPACTED A CHILDS LIFE.
THERE’S ALSO A LOT TO BE SAID ABOUT THE PARALLELS BETWEEN (ALPHA) ROXY LALONDE AND (BETA) ROXY/MOM LALONDE, BUT THAT’S A RANT FOR A DIFFERENT DAY.
TLDR: MOM LALONDE IS VERY NUANCED (LIKE MOST CHARACTERS IN HOMESTUCK) AND I WISHED PEOPLE WOULD TALK ABOUT THE SPECIFIC TYPE OF ABUSE THAT ROSE GOES THROUGH MORE.
