found family is my favorite trope, so this legit is one of my pet peeve takes.
what i love about the main four is how they all have their own seperate arcs and stories while still having a strong bond. their found family doesn't rely on some plot convinience that is always making them stick together, because it would be unrealistic. they have significantly different goals, which is why they don't see each other that often.
but the thing is, they DO meet again multiple times, no matter how rare it is, and they DO risk their life for each other, which is something you don't do for a "co-worker". if they didn't care that much for each other, they would've simply exchanged their phone numbers at the end of the hunter exam or something. but instead, three of them risked their life to save the fourth one, they promised to meet up again at a specific spot, they helped each other out and supported each other for the entirety of yorknew arc while also constantly putting their life at risk for kurapika (by always interacting with the phantom troupe), leorio wasn't against being elected CHAIRMAN if it meant that it would give him opportunities to help gon survive even though it completely goes against his life goal. get real.
the fact that they don't meet often and remain on different paths is part of what makes them interesting and unique as main characters. this allows them to be very different and unique characters with different lifestyles and goals.
anyway they would not all be the main characters if they didn't care for each other. they ARE a friend group : they simply are complex
