by Henri Lemaire.
Commissioned by the Lille Chamber of Commerce, the statue shows Napolèon in his imperial robes, holding a sceptre in one hand while using the other to symbolically protect local products like sugar beet and a gear wheel representing the region’s linen industry.
It’s original location, the courtyard of the Vieille Bourse in Lille, where it resided between 1854 and 1976.
The statue was taken down in 1976 for restoration and was later put back on display. Since 1996, it has been housed—without its pedestal—inside the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Lille.
