This kitchen makeover story proves one point: there is never an old kitchen, as long as you’ve done the homework. (source: Brittany Cramer from domino.com)

My husband and I bought our first home last year, and after a year of perpetual remodeling, I'm excited to share the before and after of our favorite spot in the house - the kitchen and dining room! We focused the majority of the remodel on the main living spaces, opening up the kitchen and living room to create that highly coveted open-concept look and feel.
First, we opened up the kitchen by removing a wall that separated the kitchen from the dining. We also removed a load bearing wall that closed off the entire living room from the rest of the house. Removing these two walls was the key to creating an open-concept living space.
photography by BRITTANYMAKES
Our house is relatively small, just over 1,100-sq-ft, and just the right size for a California starter home. This means we have to make every space count! Our dining space is located just off the kitchen and next to the patio doors that lead to our sunroom. We spend the majority of our evenings eating at our kitchen island. My husband and I prefer cool and casual dinners over formal affairs, a transitional dining space is all we needed. We chose a small, round mid-century style dining table, which sits four, with eclectic brass dining chairs, which I reupholstered myself. An IKEA hack cabinet functions both as a bar as well as extra cabinet storage. It was the perfect solution for the awkward corner between the window and the patio doors.

The finishing touch in this space was the addition of this incredible chandelier by Lucent Lightshop. It's classic yet quirky, unique yet modern. It screams California cool. It's pieces like this that define your style, and take your decor to the next level.
The Storage Solution Your Grandmother Could Have Told Your About
If you follow the major lifestyle bloggers out there or are a regular buyer of lifestyle magazines, you won’t miss these cute fridges that are called Meat Lockers back in the 1940′s... (credit: Victoria Cleveland from Elledecor.com)
What's the biggest difference between your kitchen now and your grandmother's kitchen growing up? Well, a number of things. But the most notable might be that hers likely didn't have a freezer.
Household freezers weren't commonplace until the second half of the twentieth century, which meant homeowners had to find other means of storing their perishables.
Enter, the meat locker.
"Meat lockers were common in the 1950s," NPR's Solvejg Wastvedt notes, explaining how families relied on the communal freezers, like the one which opened last week at the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Corning, N.Y.
Yes, meat lockers are back (alongside their 1950s counterpart pastel kitchen appliances).
According to NPR, they were popular during the 1940's and 50's when not everyone owned a freezer. At the time, even retailers were unwilling to invest in freezer storage space, seeing it as a waste of resources with meat most commonly bought in bulk directly from butchers.
While buying meat in bulk may not be as common in 2015, storage problems are, and cities like Ithaca, where meat locker storage is on the rise, are offering a solution.
The Ithaca meat locker has proven so popular, it now has a waiting list, Wastvedt says. And, apparently, it's sparked some interest in cities around the region.

10 Small Kitchens That Will Make You Want To Downside
Nowadays, the living space is crowded more than ever. But “not enough space” is no longer an excuse. Smaller kitchens can also be cozy and chic. Take a look and start transforming your kitchen this new year! (credit: domino.com)
This small-space kitchen feels open and airy thanks to an abundance of cabinets that keep clutter at bay and a wall-mounted table that folds away when not in use.
A slanted wall can mean fewer storage possibilities, but this kitchen takes full advantage of unique structure by tucking a small table next to a bright window, creating a cozy breakfast nook we’d sip our coffee in any day of the week.
Tiny kitchens should consider a statement piece (or statement appliance) like this adorable pink SMEG 50s retro style dishwasher that steals the show.
In this light-filled kitchen an emerald green backsplash sets the tone, styled to perfection with a pair of reclaimed wood floating shelves and sleek copper details.
Tiny kitchens call for unique storage solutions, and this rose copper installation does the trick, and is on-trend to boot.
Lacking cabinet space? Fasten hooks beneath a set of floating shelves to store clunky pots and pans. This spot is best reserved for the more-commonly used variety.
Extra lighting is always a good idea, especially when it comes to tiny spaces that skew towards a more contemporary aesthetic. Complement the decor with a cozy floor piece and rich textures, to downplay the intensity of a modern look.
Proof that no spot is too small for a little creative shelving. File this one under: best use of corners.
Elevate a simple space with a refreshing color palette and bright metallics. An extended floating shelf displays the best of the dishwater in this stunning studio kitchen.
Floating shelves allow more space for storing dinnerware, as opposed to their bulky counterparts. Mount them high up against the walls to instill a sense of height within the room.

For those who want to eat healthy, but just don’t have the time, salads are probably the easiest and healthiest choices. How to pack your salad in the most convenient way and still manage to stay stylish enough to post that Instagram pic? Welcome to Salad-In-A-Jar 101. (credit: ivankatrump.com & letslassothemoon.com)
Three General Rules To Remember:
1. Layer your ingredients heavy to light
The secret to avoiding a soggy salad is layering your ingredients correctly. Dressing goes on the bottom, followed by heavy ingredients like beans or bulky veggies that won’t suck up all your dressing, then the lighter ingredients. Salad greens always go last.
2. Be sure to include a hearty protein
To ensure your salad fills you up and keeps you satisfied, be sure to include a protein like quinoa, chickpeas, beans, peas, lentils, grilled chicken or fish.
3. Meat toppings will only last three days in the refrigerator
While veggies and beans should hold up a full five days, any cooked meat or fish will only last about three, so keep that in mind when planning your jars.

The Macramé Hangings are now trending on social medias and can be found in many big blogger’s Instagram accounts. Why? Because they are easy to make, unique, retro, yet extremely stylish! Let’s learn from Michelle Edgemont and make a unique piece of decoration for your home. (credit: Michelle Edgemont from Green Wedding Shoes)
What You’ll Need:
Twine – 200 feet per chair
Heavy Rope – 20” per chair
Scissors
Two removable wall hooks
Paint Brush
Textile Paint
Step 1:
Stick your hooks 15” apart on a wall. Tie the heavy rope to the hooks. This will make it easier to knot the twine.
Step 2 - 3:
Cut 35 strands of 70” long twine. Fold one in half and loop it around the rope as shown.
Loop all 35 strands around the rope.
Step 4 - 6:
Separate the twine into groups of ten individual strands.
You’re going to be working with each group of ten strands at a time. In your first group, start with the strand on the furthest right. Knot it onto the strand to the left.
Keep working with the same strand and knot it across the next piece of twine.
Step 7 - 9:
Work right to left knotting on four strands. Stop in the middle.
Pick up the strand on the furthest left and knot it onto the strand to it’s right.
Work left to right using the same strand to make a knot onto four pieces of twine. When you read the middle, make two knots onto the strand you were using to knot from the right.
Step 10:
Repeat this same knotting technique for four rows of knots.
Step 11:
Do the same on all the other groups of ten strands of twine all the way across the rope.
Step 12 - 14:
Starting on the left, separate the first two sections down the middle. Tape the strands you won’t be working with to the side.
Using the same technique as steps 6 – 12, start with the strand furthest on the right and knot your first row of knots. These knots should be pretty loose. [update to this step for those that found it a bit confusing — See on step 12 where there are 10 strands hanging down? Treat those 10 strands the same exact way as the strands in steps 5-10. Make the knots a little loose at first. The photo on step 13 is showing what it should look like after the first row of knots is done. Hope this helps! ]
Repeat steps 6-12 until you’ve knotted four rows.
Step 15:
Repeat across the rope by separating each original group of ten strands in half and knotting together.
Step 16:
Tape the rope to a flat surface. Use painters tape to take the twine down about 10” from the top.
Step 17:
Mix some of the paint with water and paint the bottom half of the twine. You can really use any color you like to match with your interiors.
Step 18:
Tie the rope to a chair and trim off all of the extra twine creating a triangle shape.
Finished!
As you get more comfortable with the steps, you can get really creative with this technique. Lastly, big thanks to Michelle Edgemont from Green Wedding Shoes again for teaching us how to DIY this beautiful piece at home.

Want to get it right effortlessly? Use this guide and choosing color combinations that are bold and chic will never be the same again. (credit: Lonny.com)
1. Upstate in August + Still Summer Down the Shore
Ginger jar blue and white. Palm Beach pink and green. This combination is bold and fresh giving it a nudge toward the first hint of autumn hues.
2. Powder-Coated Cadet + Brushed Bullion
Two major trends collide—bright sky blue and brushed gold—and make for some seriously magical fireworks. (PC: Werner Straube)
3. Barbie Heel Pink + Play-It-Safe Greige
Looking for a cool and unconventional way to add a hit of nearly-neon color to your space? Even the least girly-girl decorator can appreciate the tiny accent of hot pink on the piping of these otherwise-formal sofas.
4. Vacation Rental Sea Foam + Park Bench Bubblegum
The secret of combining these two colors is the proportion. When done in smart proportions (one statement piece, one small accent) and grounded by sophisticated neutrals, the result is both grown up and sweet. (PC: Patrick Cline)
5. Graphite + Citric Acid
See those back pillows hiding there? A putty gray and acidic yellow that brings a dose of urban electricity to even the most trad or kid-friendly of spaces.
6. Persimmon + Graphite
And graphite goes along with this beautiful persimmon too, giving the room a glossy of cool and even high-brow.
7. Lavender + Midcentury Red
The dynamic combination of an in-your-face, high-gloss red with an unexpectedly soft, powdery lavender works unexpectedly well together. The key is keeping the walls and floors white to ensure all eyes are on this electric twosome.
8. Shell Pink + Sea Grass
This ethereal duo, courtesy of designer Timothy Whealon, would be at home in a beach house on either coast, or even a city apartment putting on feminine airs. (Source: Timothy Whealon via Dering Hall)
9. Raffia + Citrus
A more refined take on the neon-neutral mix that was a flash in the pan color trend a few years back—in interiors, fashion, and lest we forget, nail art—this warm straw hue is a perfect compliment to the acidic lemon-lime pillow.
10. Pale Peach + Fuchsia
When balanced by dark woods, hits of gold, and plenty of black, this super feminine peach and exotic fuchsia read thoroughly modern and ultra luxe.

Bang & Olufsen H6: The New-Born of A Design Classic
In the recent years, B&O has also jumped into the bandwagon of celebrity-endorsement. It collaborated with DJ Khaled and the world famous cycling-clothing company Rapha to come out with Special Editions. If you clicked on this article, then you probably already know this brand, since as low-key as Band & Olufsen is, often times, only the true headphone fans know about it.
The fact is B&O have reached legendary, almost holy status in the design industry. It’s highlighted by premium materials, timeless design, and of course, their high price-tag.
The BeoPlay H6 is the successor of the Form 2s, which was launched in 1985. Does B&O still have what it takes after 28 years, or have they forgotten the art of high-end headphones? Let's take a look.
KEY FEATURES:
- 40mm dynamic drivers
- Daisy chain audio sharing
- Universal audio jackets
- Removable 3.5mm cable
- Great for runners
- Great for people wearing glasses
- Premium Cowhide leather
- Warm sound quality
- Expansive sound stage
THE DESIGN:
SIZE:
The BeoPlay H6 are over-ears headphones that fully encompass your ears with big round pads. This is the largest kind of portable headphone, but B&O has done a great job to make them work, both visually and practically: they don't stick out from your head as much as the Bowers & Wilkins P7.
COLOR:
One of the most popular elements of the BeoPlay H6 is the color. It comes in five different color combinations (featuring special editions in different years), offering a wide range of selections to choose from and creating a sense of scarcity for its dead heart fans.
The signature of the H6 series is the the back of each ear cup, made of aluminium, and finished in a shiny pattern of concentric circles. Another signature is its Daisy-Chain function, making sharing music super easy and convenient.
B&O H6 Daisy-Chain Feature
THE COMFORT:
HEADBAND:
The more practical side of the BeoPlay H6’s portable considerations is its headband tension. They offer a pretty solid grip on your head, and also offer a tight enough grip for runners.
PADDING:
Although the padding on the headband is pretty slight as you can tell from the picture above, the actual padding on the cups is great. It’s memory foam topped with real leather.
THE LEATHER:
COWHIDE LEATHER:
All the H6 headphones use solid cowhide leather from New Zealand where the cows roam in controlled pastures. Only the highest quality hides are selected. Each leather product is completely natural and the leather is dyed with a tanning process that provides colours in rich and warm tones.
TESTING PROCESS:
- At first the leather is exposed to sunlight in a solar simulator to see if and how it responds in terms of its colour.
- After that it’s treated to a diverse range of skin lotions, sun screens and perfumes.
- Lastly, a bottled sweat (yes, you didn't read it wrong) is applied in a heavy dosage to check what it does to the leather.
THE SOUND:
INSIDE:
The BeoPlay H6 series use 40mm custom drivers that deliver fairly well-balanced sound. They are warm-sounding, with a fairly thick mid-range that helps gives the headphones an accessible and luxurious-sounding chunkiness that Bowers & Wilkins has popularised in recent years.
QUALITY:
Although its Bass is slightly thin ( comparing to the popular bass-boosting Beats by Dr. Dre), the Treble is well resolved, clear and detailed without risking any harshness. If a more refined, crisp mids-focused sound is what you seek, the H6 will not disappoint.
COMPARISON:
A lot of critics like to compare the H6 with the Bowers & Wilkins P5. To better illustrate the difference, let's compare them to cars. The P5 is like a Mercedes AMG product: powerful, emotional and makes a brilliant roar; while the B&O H6 is like a Porsche Cayman: precise, transparent and communicative.
CELEBRITY EDITIONS & SPECIAL COLLABORATION:
B&O Rapha Special Edition
In the recent years, B&O has also jumped into the bandwagon of celebrity-endorsement. It collaborated with DJ Khaled and the world famous cycling-clothing company Rapha to come out with Special Editions.

THE LOVE AFFAIR COLLECTION:
To celebrate its 90th birthday, B&O designed an exclusive collection: The Love Affair Collection. Each product has a "90" engraved on it to pay a special tribute to the 90 yeas of excellence and dedication.
B&O The Love Affair Collection
The radiant and romantic Rose golden aluminium combined with the warm and mysterious walnut wood, bridges past and present to represent the passion, pride, and persistence that have been driving B&O for the last 90 years.
B&O 90th Birthday Special Collection

About Bang & Olufsen:
Did you know that every minute a pair of B&O headphones are sold somewhere in the world? As low-key as the brand is, it still has a significant number of fans who are dead-heart, passionate, and respect the long-standing history and reputation of the brand.
PAST:
Founded in 1925 by two engineers Peter Bang and Svend Olufsen, B&O has quickly established the reputation that their company lives on today: quality media delivery via striking objects.
In 1927, the two young men borrowed some money from their dads and established their first simple factory, and from then on, B&O has grown into its international empire.
NOW:
Nowadays, it not only produces high quality portable audio speakers and luxury home audio systems, but also partners up with Audi, Aston Martin DBS, BMW, and Mercedes AMG to supply higher-end sound systems.
