summary: halloween is approaching and there’s usually a costume party that’s thrown at this time of year by some rich kook. originally non of you were gonna go until JJ brought it up and everyone was bored enough to agree, except from you.
note: happy new year!! the way i started writing this fic last year.. hah, get it? this work isn’t entirely proofread so excuse any mistake! i’m kinda hesitant to post bc it’s mostly dialogue and i haven’t mastered dialogue writing skills so 😭
“JJ.” you glare at him already knowing where this conversation was going. The costume party is happening later today and the rest of the pogues were going, however you weren’t in the festive mood, you haven’t been feeling very festive since October started. You’ve been more concerned about assignments and exams to care for Halloween.
“I know what you’re gonna say already.” he stood at your bedroom door, his hands behinds his back, his shirt unintentionally showing off his biceps. “You’re coming with anyway, there’s no backing out. I’ve already picked a costume out for you.” a smirk arose from the corners of his lips, the pitch of his voice going up an octave in a teasing way.
Your face goes blank, eyes wide at the disbelief, then annoyances hits you. “You haven’t.” your voice is stern, standing up from your desk. In all honesty you don’t know why you were surprised, JJ is always doing shit like this.
“I havee so no bailing on me now. Meet me at the chateau at 7, don’t be late.” before you could react a plastic bag was thrown in your direction, barely missing your face. God you wish you could rub that stupid smirk off his face sometimes. As much as you love him he can be a real pain in the ass sometimes.
“It better not be anything weird.” lifting the plastic bag he got from the grocery store you peeped into it, so far only seeing purple polyester. “Aw man, I hate it when your ideas are better. Would’ve loved to see you as a sexy cop, I can just see it already. You cuffing my wrists and arresting me.” he flirted playfully.
“Ew.” you rolled your eyes, rummaging inside the bag more as you pulled out a purple headband. “Seriously, what even is this supposed to be?” you question, looking up to where JJ stood only to find him gone. “JJ?” you called out, taking the bag with you as you peeped into the hallway, no sight of him still.
The roars of a bike motor could be heard, instantly gaining your attention. You hurry to your bedroom window to see JJ revving his dirt bike, the wheels causing the dirt underneath to sputter out into various direction. “Enjoy your costume, princess! 7 O’clock, chateau!” he shouted with cupped hands around the corners of his mouth before he rode off.
“You ass!” you retort as the sputtering slowly fades away until it couldn’t be heard anymore. With the bag still in your hand you decide to pull out the costume, seeing what it was. Surprisingly it was cuter than you’d thought, but knowing JJ he had something up his sleeve.
─── ⋆⋅☼⋅⋆ ───
You tug on your dress adjusting it before walking into the chateau, the sound of your platforms hitting the wooden floor. The costume itself was a hassle to feel comfortable in given. Your hair was styled with a slight curl to it so it could better match your costume. Despite the fact you originally didn’t want to come to this party you sure put the effort into making yourself look good.
Everyone was already at the chateau except from JJ, all chatting in their costumes. It was exciting seeing their costumes, Sarah and JB were Rapunzel and Flynn, which makes perfect sense. Sarah even had the tiara, frying pan and even a plushie on her shoulder. Kierra and Pope were Jake and Finn from adventure time, their outfits looked like they diy-ed them personally and happened to be more casual than the rest of you guys. You’d kill for that kind of comfort. And you were none other than Daphne from Scooby-Doo.
“Oh look, we’ve got a real mystery solver on our hands.” JB jokes as he sees you walk in. “Just so you know, this wasn’t my idea. I wasn’t even going to come to this thing until JJ handed me this costume and just left.” you clarified before taking seat.
“He did what?” surprise hit Sarah’s face, her reaction being amusing to everyone. “So this something he just does I take it?”She caught on everyone’s amusement to her reaction. “Yepp.” Pope replied.
“Anywho, neat costumes guys.” you commented with a smile. “Thanks, you look adorable. Purple suits you.” Sarah grinned. “Hey, speaking of JJ, has anybody seen him?” you asked to which John B replied. “Yeah, he’s in the bathroom getting changed.” he smirked as if he knew something the rest of you didn’t. He probably knows what JJ is dressed up as.
Whilst you guys are chatting away footsteps could be heard. “Sorry for taking so long ya’ll, was doing some mystery solving.” JJ entered the room boldly dressed as Fred. “You’ve got to be kidding me.” you look at him trying so hard to be annoyed but it was hard not to, you were too distracted by the fact he looked hilarious wearing an ascot.
“Aye, there’s my girl.” he walked over with a smug smirk on his face, slumping his body next to you into the sofa. “I didn’t sign up for this.” you blurted out as you looked around the group, you felt the need to clarify that this was JJ’s idea. Seeing you in costume was amusing to him, though you won’t let his satisfaction get to you.
“Aw, cute couple.” John B teased. “Aw, thanks.” you responded sarcastically, matching his tone. JJ wrapped his arm arm around your shoulders. “So, the party. When’s it happening and where?” you questioned. “Some kook’s house, at 7:30.” Pope chimed in. “Do you even know the location JJ?” Kie looked at JJ, her expression saying she already knows the answer to that.
“Well, no. I just figured we fuck around and look for a house with any signs of a party happening, y’know?”
“JJ!” you tuned to look at him, giving him a slap across his shoulder. He threw his hands up in defence and you nudge him some more, annoyed enough to be mad at him but the slaps weren’t serious ones. “Jeez, chill out!” he snickered.
Kie shook her head and got up from her seat, heading over to the door. The others look over to her but you’re busy being annoyed at JJ to notice at first. “So are you guys coming for what?” she asked, adjusting the straps on her green backpack. You cock your head up to see Kiara standing there motioning y’all to come on.
“Yeah, we’re coming.” You station yourself off the couch, adjusting your dress once more. “Trust JJ to pick out the costumes.” you mumbled under your breath but apparently it was audible enough for JJ to hear you. “You know you love me.” he whispered into your ear as he stood up from the sofa.
John B and Sarah left the chateau, their arms interlinked. It was cute seeing the bond they have. You took a second to adjust your costume a bit more, watching Pope walk out in his Jake the dog shirt. “We’re going to be left behind if you don’t hurry. The costume is gonna get messed up anyway.” JJ rolled his eyes before taking steps to leave.
“Okay I’m coming! Sheesh..” perking up you hurry over to the door, fiddling with the itchy green scarf you wore whilst you walked out the chateau with JJ, your platforms making a clanking sound against the floor as you attempted to speed walk so you could catch up with the others. “It’s not my fault you chose this annoying costume.” you mumbled your frustrations under your mouth as you pouted.
─── ⋆⋅☼⋅⋆ ───
You and JJ walk behind the group as you head over to the richer neighbourhoods now. A few of you having stopped some houses for candy just for giggles. Whilst making your way to the party you couldn’t help but admire how cute Sarah and John B were. “They’re literally couple goals.” you turn your head over to JJ, quickly catching a glimpse of him pretending he wasn’t looking at you before.
“Oh, totally. John B I just wanna kiss you!” He mimicked Sarah very poorly. “Me too babe!” he followed up with a poor imitation of John B before mocking the two kissing. “Be serious, they aren’t like that.” you chuckle. “It’s funny y’know, I bet if you had a girlfriend you’d be all over her in front of everybody else.” “Damn right I’d be like that. I’d like to be able to show off my girl.”
Watching ahead you see Pope and Kiara stopping at a house for some candy, giving you guys time to catch up and regain some breath.
JJ cleared his throat as you walk ahead of him, god you looked hot. Seeing you wear something he picked out did something to him, even if it’s a halloween costume. He’d be lying to himself if he denied having any feelings for you because the reality is that he has such a big crush on you, and has been crushing for a while. It’s obvious to everyone else, though the only people he’s officially told is John B and Pope.
JJ keeps the same pace as you before you guys come to a halt as you waited for Pope and Kiara. Whenever you weren’t looking at him directly he’d take a moment to admire how beautiful you were. “It’s ironic you called John B and Sarah couple goals when there’s a more iconic couple here.” he joked.
“Wait.. Pope and Kiara are a thing?” you gasp. “What, no? I meant us. Like, hello, we’re literally Daphne and Fred?” he motioned to his costume, his answer gaining an eye roll from you. “Har, har. Very clever.” you respond with a sarcastic tone.
“Y’know, speaking of costumes, I hate to admit it but you actually cooked for once with these costumes. You’re a lot like Fred, tall, blonde, a bit stupid and handsome.” you complimented him indirectly, trying to hide your smirk.
“Wait, you think I’m handsome?” JJ asked as if he didn’t believe what you were saying. “Are you trying to get me to say it again?” you rolled your eyes playfully. “I’m surprised no girl has jumped at the chance to be with you.” you watched Pope and Kiara return to the group with the candy they gathered.
“Thanks babe, I’m flattered.” JJ teased. “Also, for the record, I think you’re hot too.” JJ murmured, leaning into your ear, his warm breath tickling your skin. “Shut up.” you shook your head to yourself. “So, what candies did you guys get?” you changed the subject, turning your attention over to Pope and Kie, catching up to them. “Reece’s.” they held up the velvety peanut butter cups up. “Sweet.” you responded.
─── ⋆⋅☼⋅⋆ ───
After another fifteen minutes of going down the kook neighbourhoods, all having a reoccurring pattern of gorgeous but repetitive houses with pristine lawns, you and the group find the halloween party.
“So who’s ready to absolutely own this fucking party.” JJ smirked, slowly walking backwards into the house as he had his eyes on you guys.
As you all entered the party you were immediately met with warm lighting and loud sounds booming from the living room. Everyone was dressed up in costumes, most of the guys attending either wearing meme costumes or matching with their girlfriends who wore detailed corsets and added a sexy spin onto their costumes. The party was too lively to do flat out sober, you need a drink for this.
“I’m gonna check out the place.” you mention before splitting up with the group. You slipped into the living room first, trying to budge through the crowd. The kitchen was connected to the living area by a cased opening, most of the rooms on the first floor seemed to be from the looks of things. Before you knew it everyone went their own ways, Pope, John B and JJ already had their drinks ready and were chilling around the living room mean while Kie and Sarah were having fun dancing with each other in another room.
Entering the kitchen you saw a trio of kooks, one dressed as the Patrick from SpongeBob and the other Mr. Clean, both pouring drinks down a funnel and tube and into the Lorax’ mouth. “God.” you murmured, you can’t tell what’s worse, the fact they’re drinking like that or the fact they’re dressed as those characters doing it.
Shimmying your way through people you make your way to the beer, grabbing one from the refrigerator, nice and chilled. Shutting the door you notice a guy shamelessly checking you out from afar, finding him creepy. You turn your back and attempt to ignore him, shimmying your way through the crowd into the hallway.
“My god.” you gave your body a little shake out, now not sure if you’re mentally prepared for this. Taking a deep breath you took a swig of the crisp cold beer, currently chilling in the hallway, but that small moment of alone time was soon disturbed.
“Hey, now could you tell me why a cutie like you didn’t go for the whole sexy look like the other girls. Unless you’re not like the other girls?” the same guy from before approached you, a cocky laugh came from him at his stupid other girls joke. He was maybe around 5’10, had black hair and was dressed as Dracula. If your patience wasn’t wearing thin before then it for sure is now.
“Is that how you normally start conversations?” you turn to him, your face still lacking any kind of amusement. “I mean it was either that or if you are single.” he shrugged. “And you thought that was the better option?” the irony coming from this guy is almost laughable, there’s no way he can be serious right now.
“You still didn’t answer my question sugar.” he smirked, eyeing you up and down once more. “And what makes you think you’re entitled to an answer?” you scoffed, this guy truly was unbelievable.
The reaction on his face tells you he felt offended. The twitch of his lip faltering wasn’t hard to miss. “Do you even know who I am? Any girl would kill to be with me.” he chuckled once more. You’re beginning to wonder just who or what on earth gave him this big of an ego.
“No, I don’t know who you are. Also, to be quite frank you aren’t my type, *sorry*.” you pouted, mocking him in a way that patronised him. A snarl rolled of his tongue. “Ah, so you’re playing hard to get, huh? I bet I could crack that shell of yours easily, just give me a chance baby. I know you won’t regret it.” he pleaded. How pathetic.
“No, I’m not giving you a chance. Now how about you leave me alone and maybe rethink the way you approach woken next time?” you scoffed, trying to make your away away from him, resulting in him blocking your way.
“Where do you think you’re going? To your friends? Or boyfriend? I mean, that’s if you even have one.” he straight up laughed in your face, his tone condescending and mocking. “So let me get this straight, you think I look like I don’t get any men yet you’re trying to get my number. You’re just proving your point wrong.” you crossed your arms against your chest, beer glass in one hand. You were prepared to defend yourself and your dignity, that was until an unsuspecting hand wraps around your waist from behind, pulling you into whoever it was.
Your body jolted from sheer shock at the touch, quipping your head around to be met with a wave of relief. It was JJ.
“Is everything ok here babe?” he asked you, squeezing your waist. It took you a moment to think of something to say, or to realise you’ve got to play along with his plan. You just didn’t expect for him to turn up like this.
“Uh, yes, I’m all good.” you responded in an almost uncertain tone at first, then you got your act together. “Just some random guy thinking he can get his way with me, but then he proceeds doubt that I even have a boyfriend.” you smirked, knowing that the guy you’re talking about is standing right in front of you, plus the fact that he’s going to feel so embarrassed now.
“Is that so?” JJ looked over to the dude, giving him a glare. You scooted closer into JJ, your palm gently placed on his arm, unintentionally rubbing it comfortingly. “I didn’t realise she had a boyfriend. Plus she was making the moves on me.” the dude mumbled before backing away, disappearing off into the crowd again.
Thank goodness that was over. Your tense shoulders started to relax, the relief visibly shown on your face. JJ knew that never in a million years would you go up to a guy like that. “Thanks JayJ, you didn’t have to do that.” You smiled softly at him, his hand still at your waist. He gave your waist another squeeze, his gesture reassuring, making your heart flutter for a brief moment.
“God, don’t even mention it. I know.. I know how much of a strong and independent woman you are.. but I just had to put a stop to.. to it.” he turned to fully face you instead of having you snug by his side, though his hands still remain around your waist. “Were you going to give him a chance?” his brows slanted slightly, a concerned expression painted across his face.
“God no, no way in hell. I can’t believe you just asked me that.” your face looked like you physically recoiled at the thought of giving that creep a chance, your nose scrunching in disgust.
“God you don’t know how glad I am that you said that.” JJ then proceeded to pull you into a hug, the randomness of it all gaining a confused laugh out of you. “Why’s that?” you asked. “Because I can’t stand the thought of you being with another man.”
Well that was an unexpected choice of words. “Are you drunk JJ..?” you looked up with a confused look. “What? No?” he looked down at you. “Well.. probably a bit tipsy..” he looked away with a guilty pout. “Look, this is probably the only time I am actually confident to just say this flat out so don’t judge, ok?” his expression quickly turned to a pleading look.
You nodded, knowing that this is something serious that he wants to talk about. “I won’t.”
JJ took a moment, taking a breath in to brace himself. “Right, okay. Before I start it’s totally okay if you don’t feel the same way.. but for a while. Actually, for as long as I can remember I’ve kinda had a crush on you.”
You took a moment to let the words sink into your mind. “Jayj..” you smiled softly, hugging him tighter. You felt the same way too for some time however you tried pushing any thoughts or feelings you had away out of a fear you’d ruin the dynamic you both had already. Now looking back on every interaction you both had, it’s obvious JJ had a crush on you too.
“I mean, now that I think about it you were pretty obvious about it. I don’t know how I didn’t see it any sooner.” you chuckled. “And for the record, I feel the same way too. I was just scared if I told you I would ruin our friendship, so in my mind I just downplayed the feelings I have for you.” you admit, feeling comfortable enough to be vulnerable about your secret you had bottled up.
JJ took a hand and rubbed it in your hair, scruffing it up. You looked up, offended at the fact he messed up the hair you worked hard on styling. That annoyance quickly went though upon seeing his soft smile and flushed cheeks. “It’s okay, I get it.” he reassured.
“God, what a night this has been. I can’t believe we just confessed our feelings after dealing with that asshole.” you shook your head with a smirk. “Can we not bring him up? It’s ruining our moment.” JJ scolded.
“Right, yeah, no that is weird. Fuck, I’m sorry.” you chuckled.
“So.. back to the topic.” JJ diverted the conversation back to where it was, which you nodded in acknowledgment. “What does this mean for us..?” he asked.
“Well, I mean it could mean whatever you want for it to be. I wouldn’t be opposed if you wanted to give things a shot” you shrugged, your smile coy.
“So is that a yes..?” JJ looked to you for confirmation. “Just kiss me already.” “I’ll take that as a yes then.” JJ smirked before gently pulling you into his lips. The kiss was slow at first, caring, his lips soft and plush against yours. The pace quickly picked up, the mutual built up desire getting the better of you both. The kiss became sloppy, lips wet, your arms snaking around his neck as you pulled him into deeper. Before it could get any further JJ pulled away for a moment.
“Wow.. I..” JJ was at a loss for words. “Shit.. should we take it slow?” your voice concerns, hoping you hadn’t done anything wrong. “No, no, it’s alright. I just wasn’t expecting for that to feel so good.” the corners of his lips tugged into a giddy smile.

Moving day had finally came, you weren’t very amused before given how many times you’ve moved before, but this time is different. Your mom and dad finally have gotten jobs in a small town in California called Woodsboro. After years of working shitty jobs they’ve finally found ones that bring in good money, providing a new sense of financial stability for your family. Your mom being a reel estate agent whilst your dad working as a sous chef.
Typically moving doesn’t faze you as you’ve gotten older, so it’s scary hearing that recently there has been a murder of two high school students in the same town you’re supposed to be moving to. Safe to say you’re concerned about moving there.
“I just don’t get why we couldn’t have postponed the moving date.” you sulk, curling your knees up towards you and securing them with your crossed arms. “Because we already did that hun, you know that. Plus, I’m not sure if your father’s job would’ve given him any more time for the move.” your mom explains whilst you count the number of cars in a specific color driving by.
“I know.” you mutter. You didn’t feel safe moving to a town where a murder just occurred and it’s valid you feel that way, the rest of your family are concerned too. “I understand how you feel with the recent news, but try and not let it get to you, yeah? I’m sure we’ll all be okay, we just have to take things safely.” your father with the steering wheel under his hand attempted to comfort you, his eyes meeting the mirror to look at you.
“Respectfully dad, it’s pretty easy for you to say that. You aren’t the one joining the same school the victims went to.” the conversation was only draining you more, wanting to leave it behind you take your earbuds out from your backpack along with your portable cd player, inserting your favourite album in before hitting play.
─── ⋆⋅☼⋅⋆ ───
It’s been a few days since you moved into your new home, which was a pretty neat upgrade from your last. The rest of the moving boxes have arrived and are already outside the house. The big pieces of furniture arrived the day before, now what’s left is mostly the smaller things such as gadgets, home appliances, clothing, ect.
You’re the only one taking the boxes out of the moving van given the fact your parents are at work. With a grunt you lift one of the boxes and walk it to the front porch before circling back to the van to repeat the process. As you make your way back to the van you notice at the house across from your new home stood somebody. You squint your eyes to try and make out the figure more clearly but it didn’t help much.
“Hey, you need help with any of those?” they called out to you which caught you off guard. “I think I can handle it, thanks.” you call back over to the person before continuing gathering boxes again, just minding your own business.
Midway walking down the pathway to your porch you caught the glimpse of a person walking besides you with a box in their hand. You wondered how they caught up with you so quickly. “I said I could handle it.” you mentioned it again, slightly miffed by the fact they just disregarded your word and went ahead and butted in to help anyway.
“Sorry, I couldn’t just stand there and watch you all this heavy lifting by yourself.” they responded with a smug smile, getting ahead of you and placing a box on your porch. Upon being in closer reach to the person you realise that he’s a pretty tall guy who was probably around your age with short but scruffy blonde hair. If you had to make a rough estimate on his height you’d guess around six feet.
“Well I’m fully capable of doing it myself, thanks.” you couldn’t help but be firm with your statement, slightly shaking your head to yourself, pushing past him to place down the box you held. “Sheesh, can’t a guy help out his fellow neighbour?” he stopped to talk to you, pausing for a moment to rethink his approach. “Sorry, I feel like we’ve gotten off on the wrong foot, don’t you think so?” he smiled whilst you shrugged.
“The name’s Stu, and you are..?” he looked at you with a beckoning look, in which you exchanged your name back to him. “Pretty name for a pretty girl like you.” a smirk danced onto his face which only earned him an eye roll in response. “Thanks for the help Stu, but you can lay off with any flirting. I’m not really in the mood right now.” you headed back to the van to gather another box, Stu following along now.
“Aw- what’s the matter? Did I do something wrong, or am I just not your type?” he asked in an almost patronising way. “Well, not really, asides from coming off as pushy.” you stated bluntly. “It’s more so the situation I’m in. If it wasn’t for the fact that there were people that got murdered here recently the maybe I’d be more up for the company.” you couldn’t help but be abruptly honest, even if it meant being a mood killer.
“Ah, well that makes sense then.” he looked away awkwardly for a moment. “So.. do you want me to go then?” he stood by you whilst you picked up another box, his thumb signalling back to his house. In that moment you realised how you’ve probably came across towards him, making you regret how you’ve been. “No, no, you’re good.” you clarified. “I’m sorry, I’m not making a good first impression am I?” a stressed chuckle escaped your lips.
“No, no, I totally get it. I’d be the same if I was in your position.“ surprisingly Stu was more understanding than you expected. “Hey.. are you gonna be joining Woodsboro High?” he queried. “Uh yeah, next week actually, why?” you responded.
“I go there too. I know we just met, but if it makes you feel any safer I can be like a tour guide and a personal escort and that typa shit.” he said lightheartedly, his choice of wording getting a slight crack of a smile to peep out from you. “Of course there’s no obligation, I just figured since we’re neighbours now plus gives us a chance to get know each other a little better.” Stu held his hands up in defence.
“I mean, I guess we could do that.” you smiled, the hint of unease slowly melted from your tongue, your words softening a bit. You slowly walk over to your porch once more with Stu following, boxes in both your hands.
Stu seemed pleased to see that you’re starting to ease up on him a bit more, plus it was nice to hear you’re up for the idea. “Cool, cool. I can introduce you to my friends too, I feel like you’d get along with them. Don’t worry, they’ll like you.” he smirked. “Remind me again, who said I was worried about that?” you hid your smirk as you placed down another box meanwhile Stu was enjoying seeing that you have a playful side. It was refreshing to be more at ease.
─── ⋆⋅☼⋅⋆ ───
Eventually all of the boxes have been brought from the moving van onto the porch.. then from the porch into the house. You thanked Stu for his help and said your goodbyes for now. Not only did he help with the boxes but he helped make you feel more at ease about moving into Woodsboro amidst the recent tragedies. When you’ve moved homes previously your neighbours happened to not be the same age as you, so having someone around your age being your neighbour was a nice plus side to things. For now though you turn to the boxes, deciding to work on unpacking them before your parents come back home.
