I don't like it when people say "if you say you can't cook what you really can't do is read instructions" because that really does not apply to something like cooking where most recipes are filled with instructions like "add a pinch" "boil until done" "cook at medium heat", which are things that require experience to understand correctly

What the hell does medium heat even mean? Every stove I've ever used has been different; sometimes medium is hot enough to burn food on contact with the pan and smoke out the whole house in seconds, and sometimes it is barely hot enough to brown meat after ten minutes. There's no standardization between brands, even individual units from the same manufacturer are different, so yeah, the dial on the stove doesn't mean anything by itself. And I hate it that even the oven is inconsistent; you'd think 350 degrees would mean 350 degrees every single time, but no, that varies too. It's a measure of the power going to the heating element, not the literal exact temperature. Some 350s are hotter than others!
