Lyis would be relaxing reading a book when suddenly Gin appeared and she would jump the book would fall from her lap. She would look up to see Gin and any upsetness would slip away as a smile would come to her lips. She would listen to Gin and shake her head slowly and say "You're welcome. You know I love watching them, I just wish we had more family time sometimes because even if we're an odd one its better than what I had before Gin. You guys have made my life amazing. I found Nait through you...and I have two amazing little siblings...Things are great" she would run a hand through her hair and smile and continue" my life would be so different if things didnt go the way it did."

While we’re talking about abusive RPers...

…don’t forget that some of the flags of an abusive roleplayer are identical to the ones for abusive RL relationships.

The Idolize > Isolate > Devalue > Discard cycle that we see in a lot of abusive RL relationships is actually creepily common online and devastating to the victim, despite the lack of physical damage in most cases (I say “most” because I have seen people driven to self-harm or suicide attempts by online abuse of this type).

Idolize: the abuser is desperate to roleplay with the target. They lavish them with attention, gifts, plots, writing, and/or art. The abuser will do anything to become the target’s new best friend.  Some abusers will become irrationally angry if rejected at this stage and transition into stalking and/or harassment.

Isolate: the abuser begins peeling the target away from any existing friends or RP partners. They’ll attempt to occupy all their online time and suggest they do a lot of one-on-one roleplay in private with them. When in multi-person scenes, they will deliberately alienate the target’s other friends either by acting out, attacking them, or intentionally making RP awkward or impossible for everyone but their target. Gaslighting starts. They may complain the target’s friends are “mean” or “jealous” and attempt to instigate arguments where the target will feel the need to defend them and further alienate their friends. Lavishing with gifts continues in this phase.

Devalue: when their target is cut off from everyone else, the honeymoon ends. Gaslighting ramps up massively. They still want to roleplay with the target, but the target suddenly can’t seem to do anything right.  The target’s self-esteem is systematically degraded. Plots revolve increasingly around the abuser’s character with the target’s being an expendable, breakable prop. They attempt to push their target into roleplay they don’t enjoy or are actively afraid of, and respond to objections or refusals with manipulative behavior like crying, insults, or threatening abandonment.  In extreme cases, the abuser may feign self-harm or suicidal impulses and present them to the target as the target’s fault, i.e. “LOOK WHAT YOU MADE ME DO.”  Gifts only come as “makeup” presents after a fight and are generally presented in public so that all seems well to anyone not involved. They are now the target’s only major roleplay partner and use that as a weapon. 

Discard: the abuser finds a new idol. Gaslighting hits maximum, convincing the target that they’re the reason the abuser doesn’t want to play with them anymore and that no one will ever want to play with them. Finally, they drop their current target and ignore them or harass them, often resorting to scorched-earth tactics and spreading rumors to make sure their victim has difficulty reconnecting with others. The target and their character are usually badly damaged, possibly irreparably.

Abusive roleplayers like this usually leave a trail of shattered guilds and broken people behind and often move games or servers when chasing a new target. Due to their habit of giving gifts in public and abusing in private, they may even have a good reputation in the community and staunch defenders (especially if they’re well-known for their writing, art, or crafts). 

In other words, good fucking luck catching them before they hurt someone.

Since this kind of abuse is hard to see from the inside until it’s already too late, the biggest thing you can do is watch out for your friends and guildies.  We’re all weirdos here, and we need to keep each other safe.  If you feel like somebody’s new RP partner is trying to separate them from their support system, don’t be afraid to speak up.  I don’t care if they write like the next Hemingway or their art appears to have been shat right out of Da Vinci’s asshole, they don’t get a pass.

If you feel like or know that this type of abuse is happening to you, remember that no plot or friendship is worth your mental health.  Walk away if you can, get someone you trust to help you if you can’t (yes, even the old friends you told to fuck off and leave you alone - they probably have a strong suspicion of why).  Take screenshots or chatlogs so you have some defense against gaslighting or malicious rumors.  You’re not alone, no matter what they tell you.

Lyis would smile looking down at her sister as she said “of course my dear, come now let’s play fair..” she would follow the tugging of her skirts. She would say “who all is invited to the tea party Rose?” She would listen intently, watching Jon run around as well.

“Well, it wus gonna be me an’ you an’ Jon, bu’ he doesn’ wanna.  So ‘s me an’ you an’ Fargas.  Fargas lemme put a hat on ‘im!”  Rose chirped excitedly, skipping towards the little table with a hat-wearing wolf lying next to it.

Lyis would chuckle softly as she said "Alright Rose" she would follow her little sister with a smile. Looking over to Fargas and would feel a smile come over her lips as she said "You're lucky Rose, Fargas really only puts up with you I bet.." she would take her seat and would just spend this time with her sister.

Lyistelle comes running into the house. Her eyes wide and her chest heaving. She is red in the face and looks like she has been running for awhile. Quite disheveled. As she looks in the entrance for Gin and if not found begins searching.

Gin would be found amidst crates of their half-packed home, currently packing for a return to Argus.  She looked up at Lyis’ entrance, brow raised high before indicating upstairs.  “Yer brother an’ sister’re asleep, wot’s wrong?”

Lyis would give a nod as she said “That’s probably what it was. I’m not used to the area I should have been more careful.” She ran a hand through her hair. She would need to brush it she knew that much…When Gin said it was a late wife’s she would bite her lip and said “S-sorry, I didn’t mean to bring up anything.” She would shift her fingers nervously against each other…she had no idea Gin had married anyone else but that just showed how well she knew her.

Lyis hadn’t gotten to know much of anyone besides Nait not even her own father granted he wasn’t easily approachable in her mind.

Lyis would look up with a smile and said, “I will be…its fine you’re my family and you’re allowed to say stuff like that…you also have a lot more experience than I do so it makes sense,” she had a sweet smile.

Gin just shrugged in response.  “ ‘Appened a long time ago as we were escapin’ Gilneas, nothin’ really t’be done ‘bout it, now.”  She didn’t seem to want to talk about it, regardless, though it had turned from a sharp pain to a dull sting, now.

“Ah’ve only go’ more experience ‘cause ah wus forced outta m’omeland.  Kinda hafta learn some survival skills when ‘at ‘appens.  Tha’ an’ when y’stop carin’ whether y’live or die, y’tend t’do some dumb shit.”  Gin flashed a cocky grin, tossing another sheathed dagger in her bag.  “When’re you an’ Nait finally gettin’ married, then?”

Lyis would no at her words about her wife and didn't press on any further not wanting to cause anything upsetting. She would run a hand through her hair as she said" it just shows how different ones life can be...I mean...I was casted out from our village but I had planned on going out on my own..mind you with absolutely barely any knowledge of what it all is like.." she would look down to the floor and shook her head and said" things are odd...how it all works...the difference.." she wasn't getting her words together all too well and that was obvious she would stop. Trying to get her train of thought to keep working as she said" S-Sorry my thoughts are a bit all over." She would look up to Gin with a smile.

When Gin jumped to the subject of her and Nait getting married she would smile brightly as she said"I'm hoping in the spring of next year! Or this year..." She would let her smile slowly let itself go as she said" I'm not the best at planning these things...my mom...Araceli had all the plans in her head of what it would be like when I got married... The wedding she never got to have..." Her tone a bit sad as she shook her head and said" but I bet she was planning on me marrying a man..."

Lyis would close her eyes as she took the dress and would head to the kitchen real quick to lay her things out to dry and pull on the dress. She normally wore a bit more color but the simplicity of the dress made her skin stand out a bit. She would walk back in.

She would run a hand through her hair and said “As for your question. I lost it a bit ago but that’s why I went through the river to make sure it couldn’t find me again…as for what it was…I’m not sure? I know I was further north and it reminded me of a boar…I haven’t been around much of this area…when Aiden found me in the beginning I had just begun my travels from Dusk wood..” she would sit down on the floor.

She looked down to the dress and said"This…doesn’t seem like something you would wear…old friends?“ Her question was weirdly worded but she was tired.

“Prob’ly a pissed off fel boar, they’re still relatively common ‘round ‘ere.  Side effects o’livin’ near a demonic portal, ‘m afraid.  Jus’ aim ‘tween tha eyes an’ it’ll usually die.”

Gin looked at the dress as Lyistelle spoke, frowning slightly.  It was a simple linen dress, white with light blue accents, clearly not something Gin would willingly wear.  “…late wife’s,” she muttered.  “Didn’ make it outta Gilneas.”

Now, she rummaged through another box, bottles clinking lightly together as she searched for something to ward off a fever.  “ ‘M no’ yer mum an’ ah feel a bit strange sayin’ this t’ya since yer no’ ‘at much younger than me, bu’ y’really should be a bit more careful out there.”
