Negation in French

An important point in French is the negation :

In conjugation, negative words are always placed in the same way.

Je n’ai pas → I don’t have

Je ne pense pas → I don’t think

Je n’y crois pas → I don’t believe it

But in a sentence, it’s a little different. In fact, if the verb is not conjugated (so at the infinitive), the negation is not placed in the same way.

Ne pas avoir une peluche n’est* pas important → Not having a stuffed animal is not important.

Être ou ne pas être, telle est la question →  To be or not to be, that is the question.

*est is a conjugated form !

And in everyday language, the “ne” can be removed. It’s mostly oral.

If you are interested in a norwegian sign language dictionary, tegnordbok.no is a pretty definitive one.

You will have to type in the Norwegian (this one uses bokmål) to find words though. Tegnwiki (signwiki) is also another good sources for norwegian sign language.

i would say it has become more and more acceptable to talk like this, if you’re above 20 or to people above 20 these days.

i mean if you talk like this in your 30s, people will probably think you’re trying too hard to be relatable to kids.

i think there’s a varied degree to how acceptable most of these are, and it largely is regional too. like to be honest, i’m in my early 20s and i don’t know all of these.

so i guess you should avoid it simply to not alienate, as opposed to it being rude or indecent, you know? like i don’t mind slang, i just don’t know a lot of the words teens use.

none of these should be used in an essay or article, and probably should be limited to casual conversation or close people.

Hi Alex! I also use they/them pronouns. I've been learning Swedish and I've been kind of puzzling over how to do they/them pronouns for myself in Swedish. How do you do it?

well in swedish we have a gender neutral pronoun called hen (han - he & hon - she), and that’s the official gender neutral pronoun over here, so i guess you’d use them

some examples: “hen lär sig svenska” (they’re learning swedish) “hen använder hen som pronomen” (they use they pronouns) 

just fyi, hen has nothing to do with the swedish /word/ for they, which in stead is ‘de/dem’

tl;dr: the swe translation for they/them is de/dem but the gender neutral pronoun that people use is called ‘hen’

Norwegian LGBTQ+ terminology - Norske LHBT+/skeive uttrykk

Ok, so a bit late for the native language day, but I thought I’d make a Norwegian LGBTQ+ terminology list. Some of these can be found in academia, some in dictionaries, some only within queer circles.

Skeiv is a word we came up with in activist circles. I’d just like to point that out, as I’ve seen some people spread misinformation about it. It has never been a slur.

After the demedicalisation of non-straight orientations, we rejected the sex-suffix, and moved on to philia, meaning love.

Anyway, here’s some relevant terms:

Homofil - gay

Bifil - bi

Lesbisk - lesbian

Transkjønnet - transgender

Ciskjønnet - cisgender

Transperson - trans person

Ikke-binær - non-binary

Interseksualitet (noun, m)- intersexuality

Hen (quasipronoun) - singular they

Note for the nouns: m - masculine, n - neutral, f - feminine.

Some words should be avoided, some of those are considered derogatory, such as l*sbe, h*mse, and transe. Never call anyone “bøg”, this is very derogatory.

Take some of these translations with a grain of salt, and keep in mind I might have made some mistakes here and there. Overall, these words are all pretty established.
