the lizard and the twink compel me. not just because of the chemistry and the drama and the banter

we have middle aged paranoid trauma queen. he's bitchy and mean and so so sad. he loves fashion and gardening and bombs. his father was reptile himmler. he was groomed to be a killer. he's sentimental and unable to be sincere. he tortured people until he couldn't stomach it anymore. he had a drug addiction that almost killed him. he's pathetic and a little creepy

we also have pretty boy himbo supergenius. he's kind and silly and so so angry. he loves tennis and playing dress-up and medical malpractice. he is dr. Frankenstein (on request only). he's idealistic and unable to live up to his own morals. he keeps dating his patients. he tortured a dying man with a mind probe. he was designed to be a legacy. he's horny and a little desperate

and you'd think they'd be an explosion of terror when they're together, but no. it implodes and fizzles out. they eat chocolates and discuss Shakespeare insincerely and probably cuddle. they just enjoy each other's company

they're still toxic and dysfunctional and a little off-putting to be around. they are everyone else's problem. they're dangerous tools to be wielded by others. but when they're together, they even each other out. and they just get to dysfunctionally function.

and I think that's beautiful

The Beat caught up with Alexander Siddig of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine for a conversation on Arab-American Heritage Month.

SIDDIG: A lot of gay men at that time, and maybe even gay women, kinda responded to the Bashir character. I think that was because of (Garashir), and maybe the bravery of not only that, but also an implicitly Muslim character being potentially gay, potentially bi, potentially gay if they’d explored that route. That is something Garak brought with him to the party, a bottle of implied homosexuality…

LLOYD [interviewer]: So were you aware in the 90s that it was homoerotically charged and on board with that? SIDDIG: I was aware of it in the back of my mind, yes, absolutely, and encouraged it. At my first meeting with Garak I became visibly flustered. That was entirely my choice. It wasn’t written into the script. So I set off in that direction right from the get-go. And Andy (Andrew Robinson) obviously loved it, and that character became a series-long character because of that first scene…

LLOYD: That’s really cool. We’ve heard a lot of times about how Andy and Garak were on board from the start but I don’t know that I’ve heard before that you were on board from the start. SIDDIG: I subconsciously keep that door open with just about every character that I play, and I always keep it as ambiguous as possible. One of my first roles was in A Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia with Ralph Fiennes and I played Feisal and again, not in the script, but that was charged with homoerotica and implied homosexuality. I’d just come fresh off that project. And I’ve done it numerous times since, characters that are written straight I just make sure are not quite straight. That’s just one of my things, probably because I’m not quite straight myself and that’s probably perfect.

Q: What made you want to start work, like become an ally to the community? What prompted you to say, do you know what, this injustice has gone on long enough.

David: When I was a teenager, there was this thing that Mrs. Thatcher's government introduced called Section 28, which was about stopping the "promotion" of homosexuality in schools, which was a weird umbrella term, which was basically saying it was illegal to talk about being gay in school or to suggest that that might be a normal way of behaving. We look back on that now as a medieval, absurd thing to try and say. And I think the way the trans community is being demonised and othered is exactly the same.
