I covered the raised beds with cardboard, wetted down, and then topped off with farm manure. The layer of cardboard will act like a mulch and reduce the likelihood of weeds growing through. Over time it will simply rot away, but in the meantime we can just easily punch through to plant up the next crops.

The strawberry plants are new this year. We’re hoping they establish well for a great crop next year.

Cleaning out the nest boxes and sadly have found these two Blue Tit eggs abandoned in their nest. They’re so small - pictured here for scale against my wedding ring, and my little fingernail

Part of the lawn behind the silver birch has been prepped and sowed wild wildflower meadow planting. Hopefully over the next few years we’ll establish a wonderful wild area and encourage even more insects & wildlife to the gar de n.

Not sure what this plant’s name is, but it’s very pretty and I’m happy it’s growing in our back garden.

Another batch of baby newts have arrived. The pond is very healthy and the water at the moment is crystal clear. Apart from putting a few oxygenating plants in the pond we leave the pond to find its own balance; sometimes the water is green and slightly murky but most often it is crystal clear as you see now.

The latest garden space to be created is fast becoming my favourite hang out

The new larger pond, the ‘upper’ pond, was only dug out last year and then filled with water in November 2020. Six months later we have frogs, newts and all sorts of insects and water creatures inhabiting the space. Very happy indeed.

It’s 5 years since we bought this place and it’s been (& will continue to be) a long journey improving & remodelling. At least the vegetable garden is organised and more accessible now; a great improvement on what it was I hope you’ll agree?
